The NFL announced a two-game suspension without pay for Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman after an unnecessary roughness penalty in Sunday’s win over the Dallas Cowboys. The league said the discipline was the result of repeated violations of rules designed to protect player safety.
Illegal Helmet Hit and Repeat Offenses Drive the NFL’s Decision to Suspend Perryman
Perryman was flagged for a hit on Cowboys wide receiver Ryan Flournoy in which he delivered a forcible blow to the helmet while the receiver was already on the ground. The NFL stated that the play violated rules prohibiting players from using the helmet or facemask to make forceful contact with an opponent’s head or neck area.

The suspension was influenced by Perryman’s disciplinary history. In 2023, he served a three-game suspension for illegal use of his helmet, and over his 11-year career, he has been fined four additional times for similar violations, including roughing the passer.
Appeal Looms as Chargers Face Crucial Games Amid Playoff and Division Race
Multiple reports indicate Perryman intends to appeal the suspension. His availability is critical as the Chargers battle for playoff positioning in their final two games against the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos, with a potential division title at stake depending on Week 17 results.
Perryman has played in 10 games this season, totaling 47 combined tackles and three passes defended. A second-round pick in 2015, he remains a key part of the Chargers’ defense, which has been one of the league’s best this season, ranking third in yards allowed per game and eighth in points allowed.
