The Las Vegas Raiders are set to release quarterback Gardner Minshew when free agency begins next week, according to sources. Minshew signed a two-year, $25 million contract last offseason, with $15 million guaranteed. By making him a post-June 1 cut, the Raiders could save $9.3 million in cap space while absorbing $3.16 million in dead money. This move aligns with the team’s efforts to restructure its roster and free up financial resources.

Minshew’s Struggles and Raiders’ Quarterback Depth Concerns After His Departure

Minshew won the starting quarterback job over Aidan O’Connell in training camp but struggled throughout the season. He started nine games and threw for 2,013 yards, nine touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

The Raiders went 2-7 in the games he started, reflecting his inconsistent performances. His season ended prematurely in November due to a broken collarbone sustained against the Denver Broncos, further complicating the team’s quarterback situation.

With Minshew’s departure, the Raiders are left with Aidan O’Connell and Carter Bradley as their only quarterbacks. O’Connell, a rookie last season, showed flashes of potential when he stepped in, while Bradley was promoted from the practice squad in December. Given the limited experience in their quarterback room, the Raiders will need to explore additional options to strengthen the position.

Raiders Explore Veteran QB Options as Minshew Hits Free Agency

First-year general manager John Spytek has stated that the Raiders will consider various options to address their quarterback situation. After expressing interest in Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, the team is now turning its focus to other veteran free agents, including Sam Darnold, Russell Wilson, and Justin Fields.

This signals the team’s intent to bring in an experienced quarterback to compete with O’Connell and provide stability for the offense.

Minshew has played in 59 career games, making 46 starts over six seasons with the Raiders, Colts, Eagles, and Jaguars. He has thrown 68 touchdown passes and 34 interceptions.

His best season came in 2023 with the Colts, when he passed for 3,305 yards and led the team to a 7-6 record in his starts. Despite his struggles in Las Vegas, Minshew remains a potential option for teams seeking a veteran backup or a short-term starting quarterback in free agency.
