The New Orleans Saints are in active discussions to sign free agent safety Julian Blackmon as a replacement for veteran Tyrann Mathieu, who recently announced his retirement. While the deal is not yet finalized, sources report that both sides are engaged in talks. The Saints have been reshaping their defensive roster under new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, and Blackmon could be a key piece in the team’s secondary rebuild.
Saints Continue Defensive Overhaul, Eyeing Blackmon’s Versatility Amid Injury-Hit 2023 Season
This offseason, the Saints made several moves to bolster their defense, the most notable being the signing of safety Justin Reid to a three-year, $10.5 million-per-year deal. The potential addition of Blackmon would further support the transition under Staley’s new system.
Blackmon, a former third-round pick, is considered one of the top free-agent safeties still available. Despite facing a lackluster market and a season-opening injury last year, his experience and versatility make him a valuable asset.

Blackmon’s 2023 season began with a torn labrum, which he admitted significantly impacted his performance. Nonetheless, he appeared in a career-high 16 games, logging 86 tackles and three interceptions. His contributions helped stabilize a Colts secondary that struggled with injuries and inexperience.
Though he had aimed for a breakout season to secure a long-term contract, his injury likely tempered that possibility, leaving him on the market this offseason.
Saints Seek Experience and Versatility to Stabilize Inexperienced, Reshuffled Safety Position Room
With Mathieu retired, the Saints’ safety unit now lacks veteran leadership. While Justin Reid brings star power, the rest of the room is thin on experience. J.T. Gray is primarily a special teams player, while Terrell Burgess and Ugo Amadi have limited roles.
Jordan Howden, a third-year player, only started two games last season. This makes Blackmon’s experience and skill set especially appealing to the Saints as they look to add depth and reliability.
Blackmon’s career versatility is another factor in the Saints’ interest. He has played both cornerback and safety in college and adapted to multiple roles in the NFL, including both strong and free safety positions. While he thrived as a strong safety in 2023, a scheme shift under former Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley moved him back to free safety.
Despite fluctuations, Blackmon has compiled 10 interceptions and 300 tackles over five seasons, showcasing his ability to adapt and produce. With $23.8 million in cap space, the Saints are well-positioned to make the move if talks progress positively.
