The Pittsburgh Steelers have released veteran return specialist Cordarrelle Patterson, a four-time All-Pro, as announced by the player himself on social media. In his post, Patterson used a sarcastic tone, suggesting a degree of dissatisfaction with the situation. The decision comes after just one season with the Steelers, following his signing last offseason in response to an NFL rule change aimed at making kickoffs more dynamic.

By releasing Patterson, the Steelers will save $2.8 million in cap space. While expectations were initially high for his impact on special teams, Patterson saw limited action in 2024, returning just 11 kickoffs for 240 yards. This was the second-lowest total of his career, narrowly surpassing the 153 return yards he posted in 2023. His reduced role made it harder for the team to justify his salary.

Limited Offensive Role and Missed Activities Contributed to Patterson’s Exit from Steelers

In addition to his special teams contributions, Patterson saw limited action on offense. Hampered by an ankle injury during the season, he appeared in 13 games and recorded 135 rushing yards on 32 carries. He also contributed modestly in the passing game, with 12 receptions on 14 targets for 80 yards and a single touchdown.

Patterson’s departure may have also been influenced by his lack of participation in team activities. He did not attend offseason workouts and was absent from the first four practices of Steelers training camp. His limited involvement likely signaled a reduced role moving forward, prompting the team to move on.
