The Houston Texans have taken a chance on Damon Arnette, a former first-round NFL draft pick, as he attempts to revive his professional football career. The team officially announced his signing after he impressed during a workout earlier in June. Arnette had recently drawn attention for his strong performances with the Houston Roughnecks in the United Football League (UFL), reigniting interest from NFL teams.

Off-Field Troubles and Legal Issues Quickly Derailed Arnette’s Promising NFL Career

Arnette was selected 19th overall by the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, his career with the Raiders was brief, lasting only 13 games. Despite initial promise, off-field controversies quickly derailed his progress. His tenure with the Raiders ended following a series of legal troubles and the surfacing of a disturbing video in which he was seen brandishing a firearm and making violent threats.

The gun video, which appeared on TikTok, triggered immediate backlash and led to his release by the Raiders. In addition to that incident, Arnette was facing multiple lawsuits — one for an alleged hit-and-run and another stemming from an altercation with a casino valet. Shortly after being dropped by the Raiders, he was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs, but was arrested less than two weeks later on charges including assault with a deadly weapon, resulting in yet another quick dismissal.

Arnette’s UFL Comeback Sparks NFL Hope, But Redemption Still Faces Tough Road

After his release from the Chiefs, Arnette spent over two years away from professional football. In 2025, he returned to the field with the Houston Roughnecks in the UFL. During his time there, he reportedly made significant personal improvements.

In an interview, Arnette claimed to have made “serious life changes,” stating that he was now “the best version of myself.” His performance in the UFL was enough to earn another NFL opportunity with the Texans.

Despite the fresh start, Arnette’s road back to the NFL remains uncertain. His troubled past casts a long shadow, and he’ll need to prove himself both on and off the field to earn a spot on the Texans’ roster. Still, the team appears willing to give him a second chance — and if he can maintain his discipline and focus, he might finally fulfill the potential that made him a first-round pick in the first place.
