New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill experienced a hostile reception from fans at the Prudential Center on Wednesday during the New Jersey Devils’ pregame ceremony celebrating the return of Team USA Olympic hero Jack Hughes.
Hughes, who scored the gold medal-winning goal against Canada on Sunday, was honored alongside other Olympians with a ceremonial puck drop featuring Sherrill and her husband, Jason Hedberg. When Sherrill was announced, the crowd erupted in sustained boos, drawing attention on social media and prompting criticism from commentators and fans alike.
Sherrill Faces Criticism Online While Highlighting Olympic Celebration on Social Media
Despite the reaction, Sherrill posted celebratory photos of the ceremony on social media, highlighting Hughes and the Olympic players. Many users mocked her presence, referencing the loud boos she received during the event.

Sherrill’s past controversies contributed to the reception: during her 2025 campaign, she faced scrutiny over her role in a Naval Academy disciplinary incident involving classmates’ academic misconduct, though she emphasized her nearly ten years of service in the U.S. Navy with distinction. Additionally, Sherrill has recently faced political criticism as the Justice Department filed a lawsuit against New Jersey, accusing the state of expanding sanctuary policies and obstructing federal immigration enforcement under a new executive order.
Fans Celebrate Jack Hughes’ Emotional Olympic Homecoming Despite Governor Sherrill Controversy
The booing did not overshadow the celebration of the athletes. The Devils honored all 2026 Olympians, including international competitors, but the crowd reserved its warmest reception for Hughes, chanting “U-S-A!” as he addressed the audience. Hughes became visibly emotional, expressing pride in representing both Team USA and the New Jersey Devils.
“I’m so proud, and I’m so happy that the men’s and women’s USA hockey teams brought gold medals back to the United States of America,” Hughes told the crowd. “You guys are making me emotional, but I’m so proud to represent the New Jersey Devils organization. And I’m so, so proud to represent the great state of New Jersey – so proud. From the bottom of my heart, all of my teammates, USA teammates, we just want to thank you guys for all the love and support. We feel it.”
While Sherrill’s presence sparked controversy, the event ultimately celebrated Olympic achievement, patriotism, and the triumphant return of the Devils’ gold medalists.
