Brandon Nimmo overcame an injury and entered the game as a substitute to hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning, leading the New York Mets to a 4-3 win against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday night.
Pete Alonso contributed with two RBIs as the Mets prevented a three-game sweep by the Braves. This victory came after the Mets struggled to get hits in the previous game, where they were held hitless until the ninth inning.
“We really needed this win. Everyone on the team is working hard right now,” said second baseman Jeff McNeil. “We’ll take any win we can get, and this one is a big one.”
DJ Stewart, batting in Nimmo’s place at the top of the lineup, started the game with a single off Braves’ starter Bryce Elder.
Nimmo didn’t start the game due to discomfort on his right side, but he came in as a pinch runner in the seventh inning and remained in the game to play left field.
Reflecting on his unexpected performance, Nimmo said, “I couldn’t have imagined that today would work out this way,” speaking at his locker after the game, still dressed in his uniform and cleats.
Jarred Kelenic hit a home run for the Braves, facing the team that drafted him sixth overall before trading him to Seattle. Marcell Ozuna delivered his second go-ahead single of the night in the eighth inning, giving the Braves a 3-2 lead at the time.
