Otto Addo is set to make a return as the coach of Ghana’s men’s national soccer team, marking his second tenure in the role, following Borussia Dortmund’s agreement to release him from his current position in talent development by the season’s end.

Having previously served as an interim coach for much of 2022, including during the World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana secured a victory against South Korea but failed to advance beyond the group stage, Addo is now poised to lead the team once again.

The Ghana Football Association announced on Facebook that Addo has signed a 34-month contract with the option to extend for an additional two years, potentially covering the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025 and the 2026 World Cup.

Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Addo stated, “To be able to take over the role of head coach of my national team is a great privilege.” He emphasized his eagerness to embark on the forthcoming challenge, commencing in the summer.

While serving as Dortmund’s “talent coach,” overseeing the development of promising young players like Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho, Addo has now been granted permission by the German club to assume his duties with the Ghanaian national team for upcoming friendlies this month.

This arrangement echoes Dortmund’s previous flexibility in allowing Addo to balance his responsibilities at the club with his interim coaching stint in 2022.

With a career that includes winning the Bundesliga with Dortmund and representing Ghana at the 2006 World Cup, Addo brings a wealth of experience both on and off the field to his new role.
