As reported by various media outlets, the San Francisco 49ers are set to part ways with defensive lineman Arik Armstead due to their failure to reach an agreement on restructuring his contract.

NBC’s Matt Maiocco stated that Armstead declined a substantial reduction in his scheduled salary of $17.4 million for the upcoming season, which would have marked the final year of his five-year, $85 million contract. Consequently, Armstead will become a free agent.

The NFL’s free agency period officially kicks off on Wednesday. News of Armstead’s impending release has surfaced just before the start of the tampering period on Monday, allowing teams and pending free agents to engage in negotiations.

Armstead, with nine seasons under his belt, has spent his entire NFL career with the 49ers, proving to be a crucial asset in the team’s pass rush. He has also started for two teams that made it to the Super Bowl, making him the longest-tenured player on the roster.

Following his impressive 2019 season, where he recorded a career-high 10 sacks, Armstead signed his $85 million deal. However, his sack numbers have seen a decline in the subsequent four seasons, totaling 14.5 sacks, including five in the 2023 season.

Alongside his sack stats, he contributed 27 tackles, 13 quarterback hits, and four tackles for loss in 12 games. Notably, he made six tackles and secured a sack against Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in February.

Armstead’s contract was projected to have a $28.4 million impact on San Francisco’s salary cap for the next season. Reports suggest that, depending on the timing and method of his release, the team could gain anywhere from $2.5 million to $18 million in cap space.

According to Dave Lombardi of The Athletic, the latter option would require a post-June 1 release designation, which seems unlikely given the reported imminent release of Armstead. A release before the start of free agency would provide the 49ers with $2.5 million in cap relief.

The 49ers are currently projected to be $3.4 million over the salary cap, excluding the impact of Armstead’s release. Furthermore, the team faces other significant decisions regarding their defensive line, including the status of Chase Young, who was acquired before the trade deadline.

Just ahead of the NFL’s legal tampering period, the New England Patriots and Kendrick Bourne reached an agreement on a significant three-year, $33 million deal, as initially reported by ESPN and corroborated by CBS Sports HQ Senior NFL Insider Josina Anderson.

Bourne, at 28, stands as a testament to NFL success. Rising from an undrafted rookie in 2017, he earned his place on the 49ers roster and played a pivotal role in their 2019 NFC championship journey.

Leveraging his accomplishments in San Francisco, Bourne secured two successive multiyear contracts with the Patriots. This new deal comes following the completion of his prior three-year, $15 million contract signed in March 2021.

In his inaugural season with the Patriots, Bourne showcased his capabilities by achieving career highs with 55 receptions, 800 yards, and five touchdowns. However, his performance tapered off in the subsequent years, partly attributed to inconsistent quarterbacking. Injuries further hampered Bourne’s impact, limiting him to just eight games in 2023.

Taking proactive steps to address their quarterbacking situation, the Patriots made a noteworthy move on Sunday by trading Mac Jones to the Jaguars in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

This transaction solidifies the Patriots’ intent to secure a quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming April draft. Among the potential candidates, LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels emerges as a top contender, according to CBS Sports, trailing only USC’s Caleb Williams in the quarterback prospect rankings.

After much speculation, the Kansas City Chiefs and their defensive standout seem to have reached an agreement.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Saturday night, the Chiefs are set to sign defensive tackle undefined to a five-year contract valued at $95 million guaranteed.

Jones, aged 29, celebrated his third Super Bowl victory with Kansas City in the previous season. Schefter notes that this deal will elevate Jones to the status of the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history in terms of annual salary.

In a Chiefs season filled with captivating narratives, Jones’s situation had somewhat slipped under the radar beyond Kansas City’s boundaries.

Ryan Clark found himself embroiled in a social media dispute with a fan after the fan called him out for what seemed like a shift in his stance on Kenny Pickett.

Initially, Clark praised Pickett on his podcast, but later on ESPN’s Get Up, he became critical of the young quarterback. Clark defended his position by highlighting the Steelers’ historical loyalty to their drafted players and their hesitance to rely on free agency to fill key positions.
