New York Showdown as Avalanche Challenge Islanders

Following a tough 4-3 defeat to the Winnipeg Jets, the New York Islanders are set to embark on a five-game road trip, commencing with tonight’s matchup against the struggling Colorado Avalanche.

This game marks the final one of the month, preceding what has traditionally been a challenging period for Islanders fans in November.

Last year, the team entered November with a middling 4-5-3 record, only to emerge with a dismal 8-15-4 tally.

Avalanche seek redemption in clash with surging Islanders (Colorado Avalanche)

Presently, the Islanders boast an impressive 6-3-0 record, but a poor road trip could quickly jeopardize their current success.

Last season, the Avalanche had a breakout performance, finishing at the top of the Central Division with 112 points before being eliminated in seven games by the Minnesota Wild.

However, this season has presented challenges, as injuries have taken a toll, resulting in a 2-4-4 record and a last-place position in their division.

With upcoming matches against the Sharks, Ducks, and Kings, securing a win against the Islanders is essential to regain momentum, especially following a recent disappointing loss.

Important Matchups

Tonight’s contest will spotlight two of the top three picks from the 2009 draft, with both teams relying on their franchise cornerstones to deliver in crucial moments.

Currently, one player is tied with Iginla and Barrie for the team lead with seven points, while another leads the team with twelve points despite not performing at his peak. Both players are expected to be significant contributors throughout the game.

The Avalanche’s playoff chances last season were primarily bolstered by goaltender Varlamov, who posted Vezina-quality statistics with a .927 save percentage and a 2.41 goals-against average over 63 games.

Without his exceptional performance, the Avalanche would likely not have remained in playoff contention. This season, he continues to shine, exemplified by a remarkable 49-save effort despite a loss to the San Jose Sharks two days ago.

Recent struggles have led to Johnson getting the start tonight. With a .892 save percentage and a 3.00 goals-against average, his performance has been underwhelming aside from an outstanding game against the Boston Bruins last week.

Following a subpar outing against Dallas, he now has an opportunity to claim a more important role with a strong performance.

Keys to the Game

Special teams play will be crucial, as the Islanders’ power play has fluctuated between effective and nonexistent.

Improvement has been evident when key players are paired together, creating numerous opportunities with the man advantage, but they will be tested against Colorado’s fourth-best penalty kill unit.

Coaching decisions will also play a pivotal role in the game. For the Islanders to succeed, the coach must refrain from over-relying on the fourth line, which has no justified reason for averaging nearly 15 minutes of ice time per game.

While the team’s talent might compensate against weaker opponents like Carolina, prolonged reliance on the fourth line during a challenging road trip could lead to failure.

Lastly, the performance of the top line will be under scrutiny. Last season, the top line thrived while secondary scoring faltered.

This season has seen the opposite trend, with the secondary scoring flourishing, yet the top line has been almost invisible during even-strength play.

Whether this is a result of a key player’s poor performance or other factors, the line must elevate its game for the Islanders to find success.

Prediction

Following a challenging loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Islanders are predicted to rebound with a gritty win on the road, thanks to a breakout performance from the top line, which should see both Tavares and Okposo achieve multi-point games.

Securing two points tonight will not only boost morale for the remainder of the road trip but also demonstrate the team’s resilience, a quality that was notably absent last season.

Capitals and Flames Clash in Calgary’s Home Territory

The excitement surrounding hockey in Calgary continues to grow, with the Battle of Alberta in full swing, discussions about a new event center progressing at city hall, and the relocation of the Flames’ AHL affiliate, the Stockton Heat, to the city.

These developments are fueling speculation about whether this momentum could bring Calgary closer to securing a new arena deal.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek calls the Heat’s relocation a major boost for the city (NHL)

Optimism Surrounding the Heat’s Relocation

Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek expressed her optimism, highlighting the importance of the Heat’s move. “Having the Stockton Heat relocate to Calgary reflects remarkable market confidence in our city.

We’ve already proven our capacity to host an NHL team, and now, with the addition of another team, this is a big step forward. It’s an exciting time for Calgary,” Gondek shared.

Economist Moshe Lander believes the heightened interest in hockey positions Calgary favorably for negotiations with Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC) over a new arena.

“The success of the Flames strengthens the city’s bargaining position,” Lander explained. He also emphasized that the Heat’s relocation adds further justification for CSEC to invest in an upgraded facility, especially with the prospect of both teams sharing the same venue.

“CSEC now has an additional 40 game dates to utilize the building, on top of events hosted by the Hitmen. This could result in as many as 120 hockey-related dates during the winter,” he said.

Timing for a New Arena Deal

Regardless of how the playoffs conclude, Lander considers this an opportune moment to move forward with a new arena project.

“It’s a win-win scenario. If the Flames advance in the series, announcing an arena deal would amplify the celebration. Even if they fall short, the prospect of a new arena would still be a positive takeaway,” he added.

Sportsnet columnist Eric Francis sees no reason Calgary cannot match Edmonton when it comes to arena infrastructure.

He urged the city to take lessons from Edmonton’s Rogers Place, which not only features a state-of-the-art arena but also a vibrant surrounding gathering area.

“Calgary needs a better space for fans to congregate, both inside and outside the arena,” Francis remarked. Currently, the Red Lot in Calgary pales in comparison to Edmonton’s setup, Francis noted.

“Packing 5,000 people into a parking lot might look great on TV, but Edmonton offers a superior experience with their arena complemented by a beautiful gathering space capable of hosting tens of thousands for celebrations,” he said.

Golden Knights Host Stars in Exciting Vegas Showdown

Entering this matchup, Vegas (30-14-4) is coming off a 4-2 victory against St. Louis, while Dallas (29-17-1) is reeling from a narrow 2-1 loss to Carolina.

Jack Eichel leads the charge for the Golden Knights with an impressive 59-point season so far (Golden Knights)

Preview of the Matchup

After securing a win over St. Louis on Thursday, Vegas is now tackling the second leg of a back-to-back schedule. The team’s offense is spearheaded by Jack Eichel, who has tallied 59 points this season.

Other key contributors include Shea Theodore with 43 points, Mark Stone with 41, and Tomas Hertl with 37. Between the pipes, Adin Hill is expected to start for the Golden Knights.

Hill holds a record of 18-8-3, accompanied by a 2.61 GAA and a .901 save percentage. Historically against Dallas, Hill is 3-3-0 with a 2.50 GAA and a .923 save percentage.

On the other side, Dallas has dropped three of its last four games. The Stars plan to start Jake Oettinger in goal, boasting a 23-11-1 record, a 2.26 GAA, and a .914 save percentage.

Oettinger has performed strongly against Vegas in his career, recording a 4-2-2 record, a 2.17 GAA, and a .925 save percentage.

Dallas’ offense is paced by Matt Duchene with 45 points, followed by Jason Robertson with 42, Wyatt Johnston with 37, and Jamie Benn with 30.

Odds and Predictions

According to the odds, Dallas is the favorite at -148, with Vegas being an underdog at +124. The over/under for the game is set at 5.5 goals.

Vegas is entering this contest on short rest, which could lead to fatigue impacting their play. Dallas has a strong record on home ice and should take advantage of the situation.

The Stars are likely to press early, establishing control and securing a decisive victory in front of their fans.

Lone Star State Awaits as Canucks Take on Stars

Kicking off the season on Aug. 30, the Longhorns will face a familiar opponent in a rematch from the Playoff semifinals as they travel to Ohio State.

This won’t mark the first starting opportunity for the quarterback, but it will be his debut as the definitive QB1 for the program following the announcement regarding the 2025 season.

High-pressure games await quarterback Manning, especially against rising star quarterbacks in the league (Texas Longhorns)

From that point forward, the schedule becomes significantly more favorable for Texas, which is projected to commence the 2025 season in a strong position despite losing several offensive linemen and a few key players.

Among Texas’ eight SEC rivals, only two concluded the 2024 season with winning records against conference opponents.

With a tough matchup against the Buckeyes in Week 1 and a crucial game against Georgia in Week 12, the Longhorns will not encounter any team that finished the previous season ranked in the CFP Top 25.

Nonetheless, Manning will face high-pressure situations, having only started in games while Ewers dealt with an oblique injury.

Among the pivotal matchups will be a clash with the rising quarterback star at Florida on Oct. 4, followed by the essential Red River Rivalry matchup against Oklahoma the following week.

Texas is anticipated to contend for the SEC title and make a return to the CFP as Manning takes the reins after spending two seasons as Ewers’ backup.

September Slowdown

The month of September presents Texas with an opportunity to regroup, enhance team chemistry, and gear up for the challenges of SEC play. The Longhorns can treat this month similarly to how a team might approach the preseason.

While it’s worth noting that all three opponents have recently appeared in bowl games, they lack the depth and talent to keep pace with Texas over the full 60 minutes.

Texas is likely to be favored by three touchdowns or more in each contest, allowing Manning to assert control over the offense during this period while building rapport with his receiving corps.

Although Manning has shown he can run effectively, Coach Steve Sarkisian would be wise to limit wear and tear on his star quarterback, especially with a demanding five-week stretch against SEC competition ahead.

Manning will finish his day early in these games as the Longhorns lean on a talented group of running backs after establishing commanding leads.

October Highlights

The calendar turns to October with two highly anticipated games: one at Florida on Oct. 4 and another against Oklahoma on Oct. 11.

Fans should prepare for an electrifying showdown between Arch Manning and DJ Lagway in Week 6, a must-watch event showcasing arguably the two most gifted quarterbacks in college football during a critical SEC clash.

Florida wrapped up the 2024 season with a four-game winning streak, including victories with Lagway at the helm.

While some Texas fans might assume a straightforward victory given the previous year’s dominant 49-17 win at Texas, it’s essential to remember that was prior to Lagway’s ascension as the starter, and the 2025 matchup will take place in a hostile environment.

The following week brings the highly anticipated encounter with Oklahoma. The Sooners will be eager to rebound from a disappointing 34-3 defeat to Texas in 2024 as they enter Year 3 under Coach Brent Venables.

With transfer John Mateer stepping in at quarterback, this game promises to be another thrilling quarterback duel, providing Manning with a chance to establish his Heisman Trophy candidacy.

Midseason Malaise

Each of these conference games should see Texas favored by more than a touchdown, though they may not come easily.

This stretch occurs between the Red River Rivalry and a crucial matchup against Georgia, which will put pressure on both Sarkisian and Manning to maintain focus.

In 2024, Texas handled Kentucky and Mississippi State without much difficulty, but both teams, having previously finished at the bottom of the standings, will look to improve in 2025.

Vanderbilt also poses a challenge, especially with their standout quarterback. The Commodores are likely to prove tough once more, as the Longhorns barely escaped with a 27-24 victory in Nashville in 2024.

Given that tipped passes caused Ewers two crucial interceptions in that game, Manning’s agility and ability to manage the pocket should help mitigate this issue moving forward.

Tense Finish

The final stretch kicks off with a demanding road game against a Georgia team eager to reclaim its status in college football after failing to reach the CFP semifinals in consecutive years.

Longhorns are poised for a competitive season with Manning at the helm (Texas Longhorns)

Having defeated Texas twice in 2024, the Bulldogs will be formidable opponents in a packed Sanford Stadium, where the Longhorns will make their first-ever visit to Athens, Georgia.

The rivalry games against Arkansas and Texas A&M will both provide stiff competition. The Aggies, led by defensive-minded head coach Mike Elko, will be keen to hinder Manning’s effectiveness, especially if he is in contention for the Heisman Trophy as the season concludes.

Fortunately for Texas, both matchups are set at home, where the Longhorns are likely to hold the advantage.

With a blockbuster opening and a rivalry-heavy closing, Texas will face considerable challenges throughout the season. However, the Longhorns benefit from a favorable schedule that includes six of the SEC’s bottom seven teams from the previous year, while avoiding potentially tough opponents like LSU and Ole Miss.

This manageable lineup suggests that Manning has a solid chance to lead Texas to a 10-2 record, which would qualify the Longhorns for the College Football Playoff and potentially a return to the SEC Championship Game.

Manning’s mobility and leadership abilities present Texas with a golden opportunity to build on the robust foundation established by Ewers over the past two seasons.

Jalen Brunson’s Late-game Explosion Lifts Knicks Past Nets in Brooklyn, 99-95

In the latest chapter of the New York Knicks’ ongoing rivalry with the Brooklyn Nets, Jalen Brunson made sure to shine when it mattered most.

Brunson had a big scoring run late in the game, helping the Knicks secure a 99-95 win at Barclays Center.

Struggling to score in the fourth quarter, Brunson was involved in all but two of the Knicks’ final twelve points that helped them close out the game.

Heading into the fourth, Brunson only had nine points, while Karl-Anthony Towns (who had 25 points and 16 rebounds) was leading the scoring.

The Knicks (29-16) tried to hold on to a nine-point lead after three quarters, but they only scored three points in the first nine minutes of the fourth. An OG Anunoby dunk was the only offense for the Knicks, and Brooklyn managed to cut down their lead.

With just three minutes left and the Knicks down by one, Brunson helped the team regain the lead.

He first assisted Towns and then scored the next six points for the Knicks. Another dunk by Anunoby pushed the lead to five, but D’Angelo Russell hit a three-pointer, bringing Brooklyn within two as the final minute began.

Brunson missed a floater on one end, but Cameron Johnson missed a potential game-winning shot on the other side. Brooklyn had to foul, and Brunson made the free throws to seal the win and send the Knicks back to Manhattan with a win.

Although the Nets (14-30) gave the Knicks a tough game, New York could take comfort in Towns’ strong performance, as he looked closer to his usual form after struggling in his return from a thumb injury.

While he missed all three of his three-point attempts, Towns contributed in other areas, with three steals, two blocks, and a plus-16 rating in 39 minutes.

New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson drives past Brooklyn Nets guard Keon Johnson in the second quarter

Brunson’s late-game performance overshadowed Mikal Bridges’ return to Brooklyn, as this was the first game between the teams since the trade that sent several future draft picks to Brooklyn.

Bridges scored 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting but was a plus-8 in the box score, second-best on the team behind Towns.

With the win, the Knicks secured back-to-back wins for the first time in the new year and extended their winning streak over the Nets to nine straight games.

This streak, which began in February 2023, is now the longest in the history of the rivalry.

Russell, back in Brooklyn for his second stint, posted a double-double with 23 points and 10 assists in the loss.

The Nets have now lost their fourth straight game and 12 of their last 14, as they continue to wait for the NBA Draft Lottery.

Brooklyn’s bench saw two players score in double figures (Tyrese Martin and Day’Ron Sharpe), and Nic Claxton grabbed 12 rebounds. The Knicks and Nets will face off one last time this season on April 13.

Bayern Munich Secures A 2-1 win Over Freiburg Away From Home, Strengthening their Bundesliga Lead

On Saturday, Bayern Munich earned a tough 2-1 win over SC Freiburg, strengthening their lead at the top of the Bundesliga. This victory, their fifth straight in the league, put Bayern six points ahead of their nearest competitors.

The game began with both teams focusing on solid defense and trying to find weaknesses in each other. Harry Kane scored Bayern’s first goal just 15 minutes in.

After receiving a pass from England teammate Eric Dier, Kane turned quickly to beat his defender and hit a brilliant 20-yard shot past Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu.

“The HurriKane is back!” commentators shouted, celebrating Kane’s first open play goal since November, ending his run of scoring only from penalties. His goal settled Bayern’s nerves and set the tone for the rest of the match.

Freiburg, managed by Vincent Kompany, came into the match eager to recover from a disappointing Champions League performance.

Their response was strong, but the win was especially important after Leon Goretzka had to leave the field due to injury just before halftime.

Bayern controlled most of the game, with 60% possession and 90% pass accuracy, while Freiburg had 81%. Freiburg tried to defend tightly and strike on counter-attacks but couldn’t break Bayern down.

Bayern doubled their lead early in the second half with a set-piece goal. Kim Min-jae headed Joshua Kimmich’s corner past Atubolu, making it 2-0 and putting Bayern in a strong position.

Kim’s goal earned him praise, but his defensive work was just as important in helping Bayern stay in control throughout the match.

The number 28, Matthias Ginter scored a header that spurred Freiburg on to steal an equalizer from Bayern

Freiburg didn’t give up and pushed forward after falling behind 2-0. They got a goal back in the 68th minute when Matthias Ginter scored with a header from Ritsu Dōan’s corner, reigniting the home crowd’s hopes.

As Freiburg tried to get an equalizer, both teams made tactical changes, but Bayern held firm. Their experience and strong defense helped them see the game out, preventing Freiburg from finding another goal.

“Our defensive organization has improved, and we managed to close out the game effectively,” said Kompany after the match. Bayern’s defensive work showed as they continued to aim for success both in the Bundesliga and Europe.

While Bayern’s win was important, it also raised concerns about the performance of their wingers, like Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sané, who didn’t contribute as much. They will need to step up to support Kane and Musiala in the attack.

Kompany faced questions about his lineup and substitutions, especially the decision to leave Mathys Tel out of the matchday squad. With Alphonso Davies also injured, Bayern will need to adjust for future matches.

Next up for Bayern is a crucial match against second-place Bayer Leverkusen. This game will be key for both the league standings and Bayern’s confidence going forward.

After this win against Freiburg, Bayern’s fans have high expectations. The match showed not only their ability to score but also their composure under pressure, a key skill for the challenges that lie ahead in the Bundesliga.

Fans can follow the Bavarian Podcast Works for ongoing updates and discussions on Bayern Munich’s performances and upcoming games.

Cody Gakpo’s Two Goals Lead Liverpool to a Dominant Win Over Ipswich at Anfield

Cody Gakpo scored twice and assisted another goal as Liverpool secured a 4-1 win over struggling Ipswich Town at Anfield on Saturday, keeping them at the top of the Premier League.

The victory brings Liverpool to 53 points, six ahead of second-place Arsenal, who won 1-0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Ipswich remains in 18th place with 16 points, tied with Wolves on goal difference.

Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Ibrahima Konaté found him in space outside the box. Szoboszlai then cut inside onto his left foot and placed a shot into the bottom-right corner.

Mohamed Salah made it 2-0 in the 35th minute, finishing Gakpo’s cross from the back post by blasting the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Liverpool led 3-0 at halftime after Szoboszlai’s shot was parried into Gakpo’s path, and he scored from close range in the 44th minute.

Ipswich forward Liam Delap tried to get into the box early in the second half but went down under Konaté’s challenge. The referee waved away their penalty claims.

Ipswich finally managed a shot on target in the 60th minute, but Alisson saved it comfortably.

Mohamed Salah reacts in the game

Despite their solid defense, Ipswich conceded once more in the 66th minute when Gakpo headed home a precise cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Alexander-Arnold later struck the post with a first-time shot as Ipswich continued to defend their box.

Ipswich got a goal back in the 90th minute when defender Jacob Greaves headed in a corner, but Liverpool’s dominant performance saw them secure all three points.

“I really do love scoring here but the most important thing was the win today,” Gakpo said, praising Alexander-Arnold’s perfect pass. “Everyone knows his quality, I was eager to be on time in the box.”

Gakpo’s second goal led to a triple substitution by Ipswich coach Arne Slot, who made changes to rest his players for future matches.

“We stay very focused. We are there every day on the training field to keep improving ourselves. There is a long way to go. Step by step,” Gakpo said.

Naoya Inoue Scores Another Knockout Victory, with His Next Fight set for Las Vegas

Naoya Inoue, the undefeated world junior featherweight champion, dominated Ye-Joon Kim with a fourth-round knockout on Friday, setting up his next fight in the United States.

Inoue (29-0, 26 KOs), 31, nicknamed “The Monster,” ended Kim’s tough challenge with a powerful right hand to defend his four world titles at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan.

Inoue, who has held world championships in four weight classes, is a favorite among many boxing fans and proved why with a stunning knockout. This victory is expected to be the first of three fights for Inoue in 2025, with upcoming bouts in Las Vegas and Saudi Arabia.

Kim called Inoue forward in Round 4, but just moments later, he was knocked down by a right hand to the temple. The WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO 122-pound champion won easily in his 24th consecutive title defense and 10th straight stoppage.

“I’m pretty sure 2025 is going to be the big year for me,” Inoue said.

“In my opinion, it was a good match, but I didn’t have enough time to study my opponent, so I just took some time to see what he had to offer.”

Ranked No. 3 in ESPN’s latest pound-for-pound list, Inoue is now focused on bigger fights later this year. He might face Mexican Alan Picasso (31-0-1, 16 KOs), the WBC’s No. 1 challenger, in Las Vegas, according to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger.

Another potential matchup for the five-foot-five Inoue is against fellow Japanese boxer Junto Nakatani (29-0, 22 KOs), the WBC world bantamweight champion, who trains in Los Angeles.

Nakatani, 27, a three-weight world champion, will defend his title against David Cuellar Contreras in Japan on February 24. After Inoue’s win over Kim, promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank confirmed that Inoue will fight in Las Vegas in the spring.

“I just want to say another great performance by our champion here,” Arum said.

“And I observed that the great country of Japan has given [Shohei] Ohtani to the city of Los Angeles, and at least for one fight, the great country of Japan will give this great Inoue to the city of Las Vegas for one fight this spring.”

Fans cheer as undisputed champion Naoya Inoue leaves the ring after defending his unified WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO super-bantamweight world titles

Inoue talks about his future fights

Inoue’s last fight in the U.S. was in 2021 when he knocked out Michael Dasmarinas in three rounds to defend his world bantamweight titles in Las Vegas. “2025 is the year for me to go overseas to fight,” Inoue said. “I’m planning to have a fight in Las Vegas and Saudi Arabia this year.”

“How complete am I? I’m not sure, but the only thing I can do is to get better each time I get in the ring. So, I’m going to fulfill my career until the end.”

Kim (21-3-2, 13 KOs) from South Korea, who wasn’t well-known, stepped in to fight Inoue on just two weeks’ notice after Australian Sam Goodman withdrew due to injury before their scheduled fight on Christmas Eve.

Kim came out in Round 1 using a defensive approach and the southpaw stance, but he faced more pressure in Round 2.

Inoue caught Kim with a short right hook when Kim was trapped in a corner and then landed a series of fast punches later in the second round.

By Round 3, Kim’s right eye had swollen from Inoue’s strikes, but Kim fought back in Round 4. That led to a strong response from Inoue, who fired off a combination of punches and knocked Kim down with a right hand, ending the fight.

In another fight on the card, Jin Sasaki won a unanimous decision (116-112, 118-110, 117-111) after a tough battle against Shoki Sakai, staying in the running for bigger welterweight bouts.

Sasaki (19-1-1, 17 KOs), 23, from Tokyo, took some hits as the two traded uppercuts in an exciting match.

Sasaki landed more punches, especially left hooks to the body, and an overhand right stunned Sakai (29-15-3, 15 KOs), 34, in Round 11. Sasaki, who is ranked No. 3 by the IBF and WBO and No. 4 by the WBA and WBC, called for a chance to fight one of the world champions in the welterweight division.

In the minimum weight (strawweight) division, Yuni Takada (16-8-3, 6 KOs) won a split decision (113-114, 116-111, 114-113) against Goki Kobayashi (8-2, 5 KOs), getting closer to a potential world title shot.

The Bills To Take on the Chiefs in the AFC Championship And Eagles Host the Commanders in the NFC Title Game

Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills will face Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game for the fourth time in five years.

Allen scored two rushing touchdowns, leading the Bills to a 27-25 win over Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round on Sunday.

With 1:33 left, Mark Andrews dropped a pass from Jackson on a 2-point conversion attempt that could have tied the game, allowing Buffalo to hold on for the win.

The Chiefs have defeated the Bills in the playoffs three times in a row, including in the AFC Championship four years ago in Kansas City.

However, Buffalo is the only team that has beaten Kansas City’s starters this season, with a 30-21 win at home in Week 11.

On the NFC side, Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, and the Philadelphia Eagles will host Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship game.

The Eagles advanced with a 28-22 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, while the Commanders pulled off an upset, defeating the No. 1 seed Detroit Lions 45-31 on Saturday night.

Barkley ran for 205 yards and scored two touchdowns of 62 and 78 yards, while Philadelphia’s defense held firm in the final moments.

Jalen Carter sacked Matthew Stafford for a 9-yard loss, and Stafford’s fourth-down pass attempt was incomplete.

Patrick Mahomes in the team practice

This will be the third meeting between the NFC East rivals, with each team winning at home this season. The Eagles won 26-18 on Nov. 14, but the Commanders won 36-33 in a dramatic game on Dec. 22.

In that game, Hurts was injured early, but Daniels led a late rally, throwing a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jamison Crowder with 6 seconds left.

The Eagles (16-3) are headed to their second NFC Championship in three years, with a chance to win their second Super Bowl.

The Commanders (14-5) are in their first conference championship in 33 years and their seventh overall. Daniels, a rookie, aims to break the streak of rookie quarterbacks going 0-5 in conference championship games.

The Chiefs (16-2) earned their spot in the AFC Championship with a 23-14 win over the Houston Texans on Saturday. Mahomes threw for 177 yards and a touchdown to Travis Kelce, who had 117 yards on seven catches.

The Chiefs have reached their seventh consecutive AFC Championship, with a 4-2 record and three Super Bowl wins, including two in a row.

Kansas City is looking to make history by becoming the first NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

The Bills (15-4) are 4-2 in AFC Championship games but have lost all four of their Super Bowl appearances, spanning from the 1990-93 seasons.

Edwards and Feagin Guide No. 2 South Carolina To 66-56 Win Over No. 5 LSU, Handing Tigers Their First Loss in Columbia

No. 2 South Carolina defeated No. 5 LSU 66–56 in Columbia on Friday, extending its home winning streak to 69 games and handing LSU its first loss of the season.

The game had been delayed from Wednesday due to Winter Storm Enzo, which kept the Tigers from flying out of Baton Rouge.

Joyce Edwards led the Gamecocks with 14 points, while Sania Feagin added 12.

South Carolina had a balanced effort, with Tessa Johnson contributing nine points off the bench, MiLaysia Fulwiley scoring eight, and Chloe Kitts adding seven. With this win, South Carolina improved to 19-1, remaining undefeated in SEC play at 7-0.

The game started fast, with both teams exchanging baskets, but LSU led 22-21 after the first quarter.

The second quarter was more sluggish, with LSU missing its last 13 shots and scoring only eight points, its lowest of the season.

Despite the poor shooting, LSU was still close, trailing by just 33-30 at halftime, partly due to a strong 29-18 rebounding advantage, including 15 offensive boards.

South Carolina gained control in the third quarter, going on an 8–0 run, powered by Raven Johnson’s four points. Although LSU continued to dominate the boards, the Gamecocks’ key offensive rebounds led to additional points.

The quarter ended with South Carolina leading 51–41. LSU then went nine minutes without a field goal, and the Tigers struggled with their shooting, finishing the game shooting only 28% (18 of 65) from the field.

South Carolina’s defense was aggressive, totaling 13 steals and 11 blocks.

LSU’s Aneesah Morrow led her team with 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Flau’Jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams added 13 points each.

The loss ended LSU’s 28-game regular-season winning streak, dating back to last season. LSU’s head coach, Kim Mulkey, praised South Carolina’s talent, saying, “I do think they’re the best in the country.

I don’t know if I’ve ever coached against a team that has 10 McDonald’s All-Americans on a roster.”

Next, South Carolina will travel to Knoxville to face No. 17 Tennessee on Monday at 7 p.m. ET. LSU will host Texas A&M on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET.
