Versatile tight end Tyler Warren adds a fresh element to the offense of No. 3 Penn State

Andy Kotelnicki has coached many versatile players throughout his career, but none have matched what Penn State tight end Tyler Warren is doing.

Standing tall at 6-foot-6 and weighing 260 pounds, Warren lined up in nine different positions, went in motion seven times, blocked, carried the ball, caught passes, and even pitched the ball during No. 3 Penn State’s first possession last week in an overtime victory against Southern California.

Later, during his record-tying 17 catches against the Trojans, Warren was key in a special play designed by Kotelnicki. He moved to the center spot, snapped the ball, cut through the defense, and scored a touchdown that helped Penn State come back to win.

Kotelnicki, now in his first year as Penn State’s offensive coordinator, described the play as something he could have made up while playing in the backyard, and it was only possible because of Warren’s unique skills and intelligence.

“He’s pretty special,” Kotelnicki said. “Probably one of a kind in that sense. I’m really enjoying finding creative ways to get him the football and I appreciate his willingness to want to do creative things.”

Tyler Warren celebrates after a touchdown in the 1st quarter

The Nittany Lions (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) are heading to Wisconsin (5-2, 3-1) on Saturday, having shown a new aspect of Warren’s game almost every week.

As a result, Penn State is currently 10th in the nation for total offense, after not finishing better than 34th in the past three seasons, and they are in a strong position to compete for the Big Ten championship. Kotelnicki’s effort to get the ball to Warren has been a big factor in this success.

Warren leads Penn State with 40 catches for 513 yards and four touchdowns. He has also carried the ball five times for 38 yards and a touchdown, and completed two passes for 26 yards and another touchdown.

Warren is on track to have a better season than Georgia tight end Brock Bowers had in 2022, which was one of the best seasons for an FBS tight end. The Bulldogs won the national championship that year, and Bowers recorded 63 catches for 942 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games.

“I’ve been talking about him being the best tight end in college football, but the reality is he’s now part of a conversation of one of the best players in all of college football,” said Penn State coach James Franklin. Warren has downplayed the compliments.

Tyler Warren makes a catch in the 2nd half

“One guy usually will make a play but there are so many things that go into it and 10 other guys that had to do something for that one guy to make a play, so that’s just why I love football,” Warren explained. “It takes a team. It takes the guys around you and that’s something I enjoy.”

Certainly, Penn State’s offensive line has been strong, running backs Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton have made big plays, and quarterback Drew Allar has shown he can lead Kotelnicki’s offense right from the start.

But they all recognize that Warren’s special ability to get the ball in many different ways makes them a tough group for opponents to handle.

Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Allen has faced versatile tight ends before. “It’s the one position that can put the most amount of duress on a defense,” Allen said. “He’s a huge issue.”

When Kotelnicki first met Warren before spring practice, he wanted to see how well the senior understood the game. He had watched a lot of Warren’s college tape and his high school basketball highlights, but he still needed to know how much Warren grasped offensive concepts.

He also wanted to know if Warren could throw the ball. The quiet and humble Warren, who passed for 3,654 yards in high school, was surprised by the question.

Tyler Warren is tackled by Carson in the 1st half

“He’s like, ‘Coach, I was a high school quarterback,’” Kotelnicki said. “All this is possible because he has that background athletically, but two, because he just does everything right. He’s a tell-you-once guy.

The fact that he’s that kind of person and the fact that he has that athletic background makes it very feasible to do those things, and fun to be honest with you.”

It was so enjoyable that former teammate Pat Freiermuth, during a visit to his old school over the summer, stuck around longer at practice. He was curious about what Kotelnicki and Warren were working on. He was so interested that he even took some mental notes back to Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.

“Even I was confused by all the formations and shifts and stuff they do to exploit a defense,” Freiermuth said. “I’ve never seen stuff like that.” He believes Warren will soon be playing on Sundays.

“We understand the game at a level where we can understand where the holes in the defense are,” Freiermuth said. “We understand different route techniques and stuff like that and how to get open. He just has ‘it.’ He understands the game and when you understand the game, it makes it a lot slower.”

Indiana quarterback Kurtis Rourke is out for an undetermined time due to a right thumb injury

Indiana Hoosiers starting quarterback Kurtis Rourke will be out for an unknown period due to an injured right thumb, the team announced on Sunday.

Rourke got hurt during the first half of Saturday’s 56-7 win over Nebraska when his hand struck the helmet of a Cornhuskers defensive player.

No. 13 Indiana (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) will host Washington (4-3, 2-2) next weekend as they aim to stay at the top of the Big Ten standings and match the best start in school history at 8-0.

Now, they will have to rely on third-year quarterback Tayven Jackson. Jackson, who transferred from Tennessee before the 2023 season, played in the second half on Saturday, completing 7 of 8 passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns after Indiana had a 28-7 lead at halftime.

Kurtis Rourke looks to pass in the 1st half

Jackson has quickly become a fan favorite since returning to his home state. He is the brother of former Indiana basketball star Trayce Jackson-Davis, an All-American.

Rourke is tied for the Big Ten lead with 15 touchdown passes and has thrown for 1,941 yards. He is second in the conference in completion percentage at 74.6% and has been named the Big Ten’s offensive player of the week twice this season.

He has faced injuries before, including a season-ending knee injury in 2022, which continued to affect him last season during his final year at Ohio University. Despite this, Rourke was named the 2022 Mid-American Conference MVP.

No. 2 Georgia remains the leading team in the SEC following a decisive victory against the formerly top-ranked Texas

Texas and other teams are realizing that Georgia is still the top team in the Southeastern Conference.

Coach Kirby Smart’s 100th win in his nine seasons with the Bulldogs came from a strong defensive effort against No. 1 Texas, reminding everyone that his team started the season ranked at the top of the Associated Press college football poll.

“Look, we were able to win this game because of what we had done before this,” Smart said after their 30-15 victory over the Longhorns. “Like, going to Kentucky and playing, and going to Alabama and playing. We didn’t flinch. You don’t flinch when you’ve been in these battles.”

Texas learned this the hard way in one of the most highly anticipated home games in its history.

Georgia (6-1, 4-1 SEC) moved up three spots to No. 2 in the latest AP poll on Sunday, the highest-ranked team among the nine SEC teams. Texas (6-1, 2-1) dropped four spots to fifth, while No. 7 Tennessee and No. 8 LSU also made it into the top 10. Even with no undefeated teams, the SEC has four more teams in the Top 25 than any other conference.

Quinn Ewers is chased out by Mykel Williams and Jalon Walker in the 1st half

The Bulldogs are heading into a break with a three-game winning streak since their 41-34 loss at Alabama on September 28, where they fell behind 28-0 in the first half but managed to take the lead in the closing minutes. This was their first regular-season loss since 2020, following a sluggish 13-12 win at Kentucky.

Texas averaged more than 495 total yards and 43 points per game in the first half of its league debut. However, they fell behind 23-0 and had only 38 total yards at halftime.

They finished the game with 259 yards and four turnovers against the Bulldogs, including fumbles from quarterbacks Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning. The Longhorns converted only 2 of 15 third downs and didn’t score on the two interceptions thrown by Carson Beck in the first quarter.

“I’ve played a lot of good teams during my time here. I mean, they’re definitely among the best when it comes to defensive coordinators, head coaches, and defensive strategies,” said Longhorns senior center Jake Majors, who has started 48 straight games. “They know how to come up with effective plans. As a team, we just need to watch the film and accept that we want those plays back.”

Georgia’s next three SEC games are scheduled for consecutive Saturdays in early November, starting with Florida, followed by a game at No. 18 Ole Miss, and then hosting the seventh-ranked Volunteers. The Bulldogs will wrap up the regular season with home games against UMass and Georgia Tech.

Quintrevion Wisner cuts up the field in the 1st half

Texas now heads to No. 25 Vanderbilt, which will be playing its first SEC home game since a surprising 40-35 win over Alabama that knocked the Crimson Tide out of the No. 1 spot a week after they beat Georgia.

For now, the Longhorns are in a good position for a spot in the expanded 12-team playoff and still have a chance to make the SEC championship game.

“You know the beauty of this format? Losing a game like this doesn’t kill you. Everything we want is still in front of us,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said.

“The challenge for us is to regroup, get back up, and prepare for a Vanderbilt team next week that’s going to be eager to face us. We need to regain our momentum and finish the second phase of the season, aiming for a win to get back on track.”

Southern Miss has terminated Will Hall’s contract following a 1-6 record in his fourth season

Southern Mississippi football coach Will Hall was let go on Sunday after starting his fourth season with a 1-6 record. Assistant head coach Reed Stringer has been named the interim coach for the remainder of the season.

Hall finished with a record of 14-30 after a 44-28 loss at home to Arkansas State. The Golden Eagles’ only victory this season came against Southeastern Louisiana, a team from the lower-tier Football Championship Subdivision.

“We are grateful to Will and his family for their dedication to Southern Miss over the past four years,” said Southern Miss athletic director Jeremy McClain. “Will poured his heart and soul into this program and into shaping these young men.

Unfortunately, the results on the field didn’t align with our shared goals and expectations.”

Hall has strong connections to the state. He grew up in Amory, the son of a longtime Mississippi high school coach, and was a two-time junior college All-America quarterback at Northwest Mississippi.

He later transferred to North Alabama, where he won the Harlon Hill Trophy as the best player in Division II. Before being hired by Southern Miss after the 2020 season, Hall served as the offensive coordinator at Tulane for two years.

The Golden Eagles improved from a 3-9 record in 2021 to 7-6, including a bowl win, the following season. However, they dropped to 3-9 last year, with one of those wins against an FCS team.

This led Hall to hire new offensive and defensive coordinators. Currently, the Eagles are last in the Sun Belt in scoring, averaging 18.3 points per game, and second to last in scoring defense, allowing 34.1 points per game.

Since last year, Southern Miss has lost nine out of eleven games in the Sun Belt Conference.

Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator, Seth Littrell, has been let go following two consecutive disappointing performances

Oklahoma offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Seth Littrell was dismissed on Sunday after the team experienced back-to-back poor performances in what has already been a tough season.

The Sooners (4-3, 1-3 Southeastern Conference) managed only 237 yards in a 34-3 defeat against then-No. 1 Texas on October 12, followed by just 291 yards in a 35-9 home loss to South Carolina on Saturday.

Traditionally known for their strong offense, Oklahoma now ranks among the weakest offenses in the FBS this year, marking their first season in the SEC. This offensive struggle has overshadowed one of the best defenses the Sooners have had in years.

The university announced that co-offensive coordinator Joe Jon Finley will step up as the main play caller. Senior offensive analyst Kevin Johns has been promoted to co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

In the game against South Carolina, freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. committed three turnovers in his first nine plays. Two of those turnovers were returned for touchdowns, giving South Carolina a quick 21-0 lead.

The Sooners then switched from Hawkins to Jackson Arnold, the original starter this season, who managed to lead the team to their only touchdown. Combined, the quarterbacks were sacked nine times.

Coach Brent Venables mentioned after the game that he was uncertain about which quarterback would start on Saturday against No. 18 Mississippi.

Littrell had been an offensive analyst last season but took over as coordinator for the Alamo Bowl when Jeff Lebby left to become head coach at Mississippi State.

Finley, a former player at Oklahoma, returned to the team in 2021 as the assistant head coach for offense, also working with tight ends and H-backs. He served as the tight ends coach for the last two seasons before being elevated to co-offensive coordinator last November.

“The leadership role Joe Jon plays on our team is critical,” Venables said in a statement. “He has the confidence of our locker room and coaching staff, and I’m thankful to him for taking on this expanded role in the middle of the season.”

Kane breaks his goal drought by scoring a hat trick in Bayern’s 4-0 victory over Stuttgart in the Bundesliga

Harry Kane ended his short goal drought by scoring a hat trick, helping Bayern Munich win 4-0 against Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

“As a striker, sometimes there’s a lot of talk when you go a little spell without scoring,” Kane said. “That’s just part and parcel of being a striker. You can’t get too high or too low. I believe in myself and my ability. I believe in my teammates who create chances.”

Kane hadn’t scored in four matches—three with Bayern and one with England—before he finally broke his streak with a long-range shot in the 57th minute.

Just four minutes later, he netted his second goal after another attempt was saved by Alexander Nübel. He then missed another chance before completing his hat trick in the 80th minute, tapping in a rebound from a shot by João Palhinha.

Harry Kane heads the ball

Palhinha had come on early in the game after Aleksandar Pavlovic left with a shoulder injury. This was the Portuguese midfielder’s fifth Bundesliga match, with all but one being as a substitute.

With these three goals, Kane raised his season total to eight. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush is the league’s top scorer with nine.

“Today three goals, but very important, he also helped us not concede,” Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said about Kane.

Substitute Kingsley Coman added Bayern’s fourth goal with a beautiful curling shot into the far corner.

Neymar will be ready to play for Al-Hilal next week after spending a year recovering from an ACL injury

Neymar is set to play for Al-Hilal in an AFC Champions League match next week after being out for a year due to injury.

His marketing company, NR Sports, announced on Saturday that Neymar’s passion for soccer and his desire to compete in the next World Cup are motivating his return.

“Though there’s no final decision for his return, the number 10 will be able to play on Monday to carry on with his remarkable trajectory,” the statement noted, referring to Al-Hilal’s match against Al-Ain from the UAE.

Neymar joined Al-Hilal in August 2023 and had played just five games before needing surgery for a torn meniscus and ACL in his left knee while playing for his country last October.

“These were days of pain, anguish, and a lot of longing for soccer, which were overcome with the help of family and friends, always present for our number 10. And all the fans around the world who gave him all support in social media networks,” the statement continued. “The wait is over.”

A social media post also shared on Saturday featured Neymar discussing his recovery and showed clips of his training efforts.

“Every time I get injured, I come back. But I don’t come back halfway,” a tearful Neymar said in a video.

He started training again in July, but in September, his coach Jorge Jesus said Neymar’s return might take longer. The coach did not confirm if Neymar would play on Monday.

Neymar’s two-year contract expires next August, and he can play in AFC Champions League matches since there are no limits on foreign players in that competition. However, he will only return to the Saudi Pro League in January.

If he is healthy, Neymar could rejoin Brazil’s national team for two World Cup qualifying matches in November.

Modric becomes the oldest player for Real Madrid and sets up the winning goal against Celta Vigo

Luka Modric made history by becoming the oldest player for Real Madrid while also providing the assist for the winning goal in a 2-1 win against Celta Vigo in La Liga on Saturday.

At 39 years and 40 days old, Modric broke the previous record held by Ferenc Puskas since 1966 by four days. He came on as a substitute in the second half after Celta had equalized.

The Croatian midfielder quickly made an impact by sending a perfect pass to Vinícius Júnior, who scored the winning goal in the 66th minute at Balaidos Stadium.

“It was a hard-fought game,” said Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. “But we knew how to hang in there and got three important points thanks to a great pass by Modric. Luka always gives us something.”

Kylian Mbappé put Madrid ahead with a long-range goal in the 20th minute, but Williot Swedberg equalized for Celta in the 51st minute from a cross by Óscar Mingueza.

That’s when Ancelotti turned to Modric to help the defending champions regain control.

When asked about Modric’s legacy at the club, Ancelotti said, “There is nothing else to say about a fantastic game; he is a great professional with character. Real Madrid has been, and is, lucky to have him.”

Modric holds the record for the most titles in Real Madrid’s history with 27, which includes six Champions League titles and four Spanish league titles.

This victory was not easy, as Celta put up a strong fight. Thibaut Courtois made crucial saves against shots from Swedberg and Jonathan Bamba, and Celta substitute Anastasios Douvikas nearly scored an equalizer in stoppage time.

“We leave with a bittersweet feeling,” said Celta midfielder Fran Beltran. “We took the game to Real Madrid and played better than them at times.”

Ancelotti’s team remains unbeaten after 10 rounds in La Liga, tying with Barcelona in points as they prepare to face Sevilla on Sunday.

Madrid also has a busy week ahead, with a home match against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday, followed by their first clasico of the season against Barcelona next weekend.

Milan manages to secure a narrow victory over Udinese despite having only 10 players, while Juventus triumphs against a 10-man Lazio

AC Milan made several changes and still managed to beat Udinese 1-0 in Serie A on Saturday, even after being reduced to 10 players.

Theo Hernández was suspended, and Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori, and Rafael Leão were left out of the lineup. Milan faced a tougher challenge when midfielder Tijjani Reijnders received a red card in the 29th minute.

Luckily for Milan, Samuel Chukwueze scored in the 13th minute with help from Christian Pulisic. They managed to hold on, even after Udinese had two goals disallowed for offside, including one late in stoppage time.

With this win, Milan is now level on points with third-placed Inter Milan, which plays against Roma on Sunday. Juventus moved two points ahead of them after a narrow 1-0 win against 10-man Lazio.

Milan had lost 2-1 to Fiorentina before the international break, where Hernández and Abraham missed penalty kicks. Hernández was sent off after the game for insulting the referee and received a two-match ban.

Samuel Chukwueze and Jordan Zemura fights for the ball in the game

The changed Milan team started strong against Udinese, taking the lead when Noah Okafor pushed down the left and set up Pulisic, who assisted Chukwueze to score in the far bottom corner.

Pulisic has been involved in at least one goal for seven straight league matches, with five goals and three assists.

Milan was in control until Reijnders was sent off for tripping Sandi Lovric as he was breaking toward the goal.

Kingsley Ehizibue thought he had equalized for Udinese right before halftime, but he was offside by a very narrow margin.

Pulisic almost doubled Milan’s lead in the 75th minute, but his shot was saved by Maduka Okoye. Abraham, who had just come on, injured his shoulder trying to score from the rebound and had to leave the game.

Udinese looked like they had scored again when Christian Kabasele headed in a rebound in stoppage time, but VAR ruled it offside after a very close call in the buildup.

Lionel Messi will be participating in the Club World Cup next year.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced on Saturday night that Inter Miami will take part in the tournament, which many had anticipated due to Messi’s immense global popularity and plans for some matches in South Florida.

Bayern midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic has had surgery to repair a broken collarbone

Bayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic has had surgery after breaking his collarbone during Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Stuttgart, the club announced on Sunday.

Pavlovic was injured in the eighth minute when he fell hard on his shoulder, and this injury will keep him out for “the coming weeks,” according to the team.

After the game, an examination confirmed the injury, and Pavlovic had successful surgery on Sunday morning.

This is another setback for the 20-year-old midfielder, who is seen as one of Germany’s top young players. He was part of the Germany squad for Euro 2024 but had to withdraw due to illness just four days before the tournament started.

Bayern’s next match is an away game against Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Antonio Conte’s halftime speech proves effective as Napoli rises to defeat Empoli

Whatever Antonio Conte said to his team at halftime seemed to work, as Napoli defeated Empoli 1-0 in Serie A on Sunday after showing significant improvement in the second half.

A penalty from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was enough for Napoli to clinch the win and put them three points ahead of Inter Milan, who were set to play Roma later.

This was the first goal Empoli’s home fans had seen this season, as all three previous league matches at the Stadio Carlo Castellani had ended in 0-0 draws.

For Empoli, it was a second consecutive loss, having previously been unbeaten until their defeat against Lazio before the international break.

Antonio Conte looks at the game from the sidelines

Napoli’s goalkeeper Elia Caprile, who was on loan at Empoli last season, made several outstanding saves, making things difficult for his former team.

Lorenzo Colombo also missed a chance in the first half, where Empoli played better than Napoli.

However, the home team would regret their missed chances when Napoli took the lead in the 63rd minute after Tino Anjorin fouled Matteo Politano in the box.

Kvaratskhelia remained calm during the penalty, using a stuttering run-up and waiting for the goalkeeper to move before rolling the ball into the center of the net.

Since a loss to Hellas Verona on the opening day of the season during Conte’s first match, Napoli has won six of its last seven Serie A games, with the only other result being a 0-0 draw against Juventus.
