Harry Kane scored from a penalty and Thomas Müller found the net in his club-record 710th game as Bayern Munich defeated Freiburg 2-0 in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
Müller, who replaced new signing Michael Olise in the 59th minute, set a new club record for most games played, surpassing the previous mark of 709 games held by legendary goalkeeper Sepp Maier.
Müller’s goal came in the 78th minute. He took control of a cross from Serge Gnabry, managed to maneuver around Freiburg’s Maximilian Eggestein with one touch, and then shot the ball past goalkeeper Florian Müller.
“Records aren’t so important for me, to be honest, instead it’s that I scored a really beautiful goal,” Müller said to DAZN. “Outstanding technique and then it goes in too, that’s what’s fun for me.”
Harry Kane celebrates after scoring a goal
This goal was Müller’s 150th in his Bundesliga career and extended his streak of scoring in 16 consecutive top-tier German seasons back to the 2009-10 season.
The 34-year-old forward set a club record for the second consecutive game after surpassing Maier’s record for most Bundesliga games with Bayern last week.
Earlier in the match, Kane scored his first Bundesliga goal of the season from a penalty after being fouled by Freiburg defender Max Rosenfelder. The referee initially did not award the penalty but changed the decision after reviewing video footage.
In added time, João Palhinha, a new signing for Bayern, committed a handball that led to another penalty opportunity for Freiburg. However, Lucas Höler missed the chance by firing over the bar, keeping Bayern’s clean sheet intact in Vincent Kompany’s first home game as coach.
Coach Mikey Varas of the United States, gives directions to his players during a FIFA U-20 World Cup Group B soccer match
Assistant Mikey Varas will take over as the U.S. coach for the upcoming friendly matches against Canada and New Zealand, as a new contract for Mauricio Pochettino to replace Gregg Berhalter has not yet been finalized.
On Sunday, Varas selected a 24-man squad that includes Diego Kochen, a goalkeeper from Barcelona’s youth system, and Marlon Fossey, a defender from Standard Liege, both of whom have not previously played for the national team.
Several injured players, including right back Sergiño Dest, midfielder Tyler Adams, and winger Tim Weah, will miss the matches. Defenders Antonee Robinson and Cameron Carter-Vickers, as well as midfielder Weston McKennie, were also left out to stay with their clubs.
The U.S. will play Canada on Saturday in Kansas City, Kansas, and then face New Zealand three days later in Cincinnati.
Osumane Dembele takes a shot in the game
Berhalter was dismissed on July 10, a week after the U.S. was knocked out in the first round of the Copa America. The U.S. Soccer Federation began talks with Pochettino, a former Tottenham and Chelsea manager, more than two weeks ago.
Varas, who was previously an assistant coach for Dallas and led the U.S. under-20 team from November 2021 to August 2023, guided the U.S. to win the 2022 CONCACAF title, securing the team’s first men’s Olympic berth since 2008. He also took the team to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Under-20 World Cup, where they lost to Uruguay 2-0.
The USSF had planned for Varas to manage the team for the September games. Last year, two of Berhalter’s former assistants, Anthony Hudson and B.J. Callaghan, also served as interim coaches.
The current roster includes six players who did not participate in the Copa America: Kochen, Fossey, goalkeeper Patrick Schulte, defenders Auston Trusty and Caleb Wiley, and midfielder Aidan Morris.
Harry Kane celebrates with teammates after scoring the opening goal during the Bundesliga soccer match
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund both got potentially challenging matches against other Bundesliga teams in the German Cup second-round draw on Sunday.
Bayern Munich will travel to Mainz, while Borussia Dortmund will go to Wolfsburg. These games are scheduled to take place on either October 29 or 30.
There are also two other all-Bundesliga matchups: Leipzig will host St. Pauli, who were promoted this season, and Eintracht Frankfurt will face Borussia Moenchengladbach.
Kylian Mbappé celebrates his goal
Bayer Leverkusen, who won both the league and cup last season, will play at home against second-division team Elversberg. Leverkusen was eliminated by Elversberg in the first round last year.
Out of the 18 Bundesliga teams, only Bochum is not in the second round after losing 1-0 to second-tier Jahn Regensburg last month.
For Thiago Motta’s Juventus, the 0-0 draw with Roma was a hard-earned point that kept them unbeaten.
For Daniele De Rossi’s Roma, it was a positive step after a tough start to the season.
On Sunday in Serie A, Juventus and Roma drew 0-0 at Juventus’ home ground, with each team managing only one shot on target.
Roma had more of the ball early on, but Juventus became more threatening as the game went on, especially with Dusan Vlahovic.
De Rossi initially kept former Juventus player Paulo Dybala on the bench but brought him on midway through the second half.
Niccolo Pisilli tries to contol the ball
Dybala, who recently turned down an offer from Saudi Arabia, didn’t make much impact as both teams slowed down on a warm night in Turin.
Juventus now has seven points, tying them with Inter Milan, Torino, and Udinese. This is Motta’s first season with Juventus after coming from Bologna.
Roma, which is still winless and coming off a disappointing loss to Empoli, has two points in De Rossi’s second season after taking over from Jose Mourinho in January.
Roma, which was more offensive last season, has only scored once in three games this season.
In another match, Udinese won 1-0 against newly promoted Como with a first-half goal from Brenner. Como’s Patrick Cutrone missed a late penalty.
Paris Saint-Germain is having a flawless start to the season even after Kylian Mbappé left for Real Madrid, thanks to a 3-1 win at Lille in the French league on Sunday.
PSG is at the top of the standings with nine points from three games and has scored 13 goals so far. They began the season with a 4-1 win against Le Havre and then a 6-0 victory over Montpellier.
In the Lille match, Vitinha scored a penalty in the 33rd minute to give PSG the lead, and Bradley Barcola added another goal shortly after. Lille’s Edon Zhegrova scored in the 78th minute, but Randal Kolo Muani secured the win for PSG in stoppage time.
Osumane Dembele takes a shot in the game
On the same day, Monaco and Lens ended in a 1-1 draw with two late goals. Denis Zakaria scored for Monaco in the 84th minute, and Lens equalized with a penalty from Przemyslaw Frankowski in stoppage time.
Nice won 4-1 against Angers, Le Havre defeated Auxerre 3-1, and Reims beat Rennes 2-1.
On Saturday, Mason Greenwood scored twice in a minute to help Marseille win 3-1 against Toulouse. Greenwood, formerly of Manchester United, now has five goals in the first three Ligue 1 matches, tying Mario Balotelli’s record from 2016 with Nice.
Kylian Mbappé ended his scoring drought in the Spanish league with two goals in less than 10 minutes, helping Real Madrid secure a 2-0 victory over Real Betis on Sunday.
Mbappé, who was a major signing for Madrid this year, had scored once in their UEFA Super Cup win against Atalanta last month, but had not scored in his last three Spanish league games.
“I was excited to score in this iconic stadium, the best in the world,” Mbappé said. “But the most important thing was the win.”
He scored the first goal at the Santiago Bernabeu with a low left-footed shot after a clever backheel pass from Federico Valverde in the 67th minute. Mbappé then scored again with a penalty kick in the 75th minute after Vinicius Junior was fouled.
Madrid had drawn two of their first three matches, with their only win coming against Valladolid.
Kylian Mbappé celebrates after a goal
This win moved the defending champions to within four points of leaders Barcelona, who have won all their games so far.
“After the game against Las Palmas, we knew we needed to win, and we did,” Mbappé said. “It was a tough match, but we are Real Madrid and we managed to win.”
Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said there was no pressure on Mbappé to break his scoring drought.
“For him, it was important to score, but we look at the team’s overall performance, which was better than in the last match. It was a positive step forward.”
The result kept Betis winless after three games; they had drawn their first two matches.
On Sunday, Angel Reese set the WNBA record for most rebounds in a single season during the Chicago Sky’s 79-74 loss to the Minnesota Lynx. Reese finished with 17 points and 19 rebounds, marking her 24th double-double of the season, a rookie record.
She now has 418 rebounds, averaging 13.1 per game, surpassing Sylvia Fowles’ previous record of 404 rebounds set in 2018. Reese also set a new record for offensive rebounds with 165, breaking Yolanda Griffiths’ record of 162 from 2001.
Reese and A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces are the only players this season with at least four games of 15 or more points and 15 or more rebounds.
Courtney Williams scored 22 points for the Lynx, tying her season high. Kayla McBride added 17 points and Napheesa Collier chipped in 15 points for Minnesota (24-9).
Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark in the WNBA Draft
The Lynx, who had their six-game winning streak ended on Friday with a loss to Dallas, have the best record since the Olympic break with an 8-1 record.
The Sky (11-21) have now lost six straight games and are tied with Atlanta for the final playoff spot after the Dream defeated the Los Angeles Sparks later on Sunday.
Kamilla Cardoso led the Sky with a career-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds. Michaela Onyenwere scored 15 points. Minnesota took control early with a 14-4 run, and despite a late push from the Sky, the Lynx held on for the win.
Caitlin Clark scored 28 points and had 12 assists as the Indiana Fever beat the Dallas Wings 100-93 on Sunday. The Fever managed to win despite Arike Ogunbowale hitting nine three-pointers, which tied a record.
Kelsey Mitchell added 36 points, including a three-pointer that put the Fever ahead by four with 1:58 left in the game. Both teams had won their previous three games.
Ogunbowale made 9 of 16 three-point attempts, surpassing her own record of seven but falling short of a record 10th three-pointer. She scored 34 points and also matched her career high with eight rebounds.
She tied the league record for most three-pointers in a game, which is also held by Mitchell (2019) and Jewell Loyd of Seattle (2023).
Mitchell praised Ogunbowale, saying, “I salute people like Arike because off the court, we’re really great friends. We tend to work out and train together in the offseason. I wasn’t expecting any other way coming from a person like that.”
Satou Sabally celebrates after scoring
Clark and Mitchell each made five three-pointers, helping the Fever shoot 50% from beyond the arc and 53% overall.
Clark said, “When you have two guards that are both making plays, it puts the other team in a tough position of what to take away, who to put on who.
We’re definitely shooting it well. We’re playing off each other well. We’re looking for each other, and we’re getting downhill, too. I think it’s been a good balance of everything.”
Clark had just scored a career-high 31 points in a previous game against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky. She also set a WNBA record with 19 assists in her first regular-season game in Texas, before the Olympic break, in a game the Fever lost 101-93.
J’Mari Taylor ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns and caught a pass for another score as North Carolina Central overcame a long halftime thunderstorm to defeat Alabama State 31-24 in the Orange Blossom Classic at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday.
North Carolina Central (1-0) started the game strong by driving 75 yards on 11 plays after receiving the opening kickoff. Taylor scored on a one-yard run to put the Eagles ahead 7-0. Walker Harris was perfect on this drive, completing all five of his passes for 55 yards.
Harris continued his accuracy, connecting on his first seven passes. A 34-yard pass to Joaquin Davis set up a first-and-goal at the 5-yard line, where Taylor ran in for another touchdown, making it 14-0 less than two minutes into the second quarter.
Kole Jones intercepted a Jonah O’Brien pass and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown, giving North Carolina Central a 21-0 lead just 53 seconds later.
AJ Gates Jr. answered for Alabama State (0-1) with an 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

The Hornets closed the gap to 21-14 by halftime when Andrew Body capped a 10-play, 96-yard drive with a 38-yard touchdown run on second-and-18.
In the second half, Kamari Houze blocked a punt, which North Carolina Central recovered on the Hornets’ 25-yard line. Harris then connected with Taylor for a 14-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 31-17 with 8:40 left.
Alabama State’s Keane Lewis blocked a punt, and the Hornets recovered it at the Eagles’ 35-yard line. Body ran 39 yards for a touchdown on fourth-and-14, making it 31-24 with 3:33 remaining.
The Hornets had a chance to tie the game with 1:39 left, but D.J. Estes intercepted O’Brien at midfield to secure the win for North Carolina Central.
Harris ended the game with 119 passing yards, despite missing 9 of his last 11 throws.
Jeremiah Smith gave a glimpse of his potential in his debut, suggesting he might meet the high expectations placed on him at Ohio State.
The freshman receiver stood out on Saturday, leading the team with six catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns. His performances showed his unique skill of finding open spaces even when it seemed unlikely. The No. 2 Buckeyes defeated Akron 52-6.
Coach Ryan Day, who has seen many talented receivers, was impressed by Smith. Smith became the first Ohio State freshman to catch two touchdown passes in a season opener since 1996.
“He’s built differently, just with his approach,” Day said. “You can see his size (6 foot 3, 215 pounds) and speed, but usually, someone with that kind of talent lacks discipline and focus.
“Sometimes he seems almost unreal, but he’s human,” Day added. “He will make a few early mistakes, but not many.”
Jeremiah Smith is the NCAA college football team
The first pass thrown to Smith, on Ohio State’s first series, was a drop (Smith later said he was glad to get that out of the way). He improved significantly from that point.
Later in the first quarter, Smith made a smooth catch in the end zone from a 16-yard pass by Kansas State transfer quarterback Will Howard.
“If he’s in a one-on-one situation, just throw it up and he’ll make a play. That’s exactly what he did,” Howard said. “I just need to give him a chance, and he’ll take care of the rest.”
Before halftime, Smith caught a 9-yard pass in the end zone while being tightly covered by cornerback Devonte Golden-Nelson. His standout moment might have been a 45-yard catch in the third quarter with a defender’s hand in his face.
That catch set up a 2-yard scoring run by Quinshon Judkins, marking his first touchdown as a Buckeye after transferring from Mississippi.
Woody Marks celebrates after scoring the winning touchdown
Lincoln Riley had a flashback to three years ago when he was coaching Oklahoma.
Back then, the Sooners were tied with their rival Texas, and a 33-yard run into the end zone with 3 seconds left secured the win against the Longhorns.
On Sunday night, with No. 23 Southern California needing just a field goal to win, Riley remembered that play. A run was called for Woody Marks, who ran 13 yards up the middle to score with 8 seconds left, giving USC a 27-20 victory over No. 13 LSU.
“I told someone on the headset, ‘It wouldn’t surprise me if he creases this,’” Riley said. “And, of course, it happened.”
Miller Moss threw for 378 yards and a touchdown. His 20-yard pass to Kyron Hudson and a subsequent targeting penalty on LSU with 18 seconds left set up Marks’ winning score. This was Marks’ second touchdown run.
“We worked really hard throughout the offseason to build the identity of a tough team that really cares about each other,” Moss said.
Garrett Nussmeier looks to pass the ball
Moss outperformed LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier, who completed 29 of 38 passes for 304 yards with two touchdowns and an interception on the final drive.
Moss was similarly efficient, completing 27 of 36 passes in a matchup of quarterbacks who had waited their turns after sitting behind the most recent Heisman Trophy winners, LSU’s Jayden Daniels and USC’s Caleb Williams.
USC, in its first season in the Big Ten Conference, made a statement with this win, their first meeting with LSU in 40 years. It showed that the Trojans could be a strong team after a disappointing 8-5 season last year.
“That was some pretty good Big Ten football today,” Riley said with a smile.
And it came against an SEC team hoping to prove it belongs in the College Football Playoff.
Miller Moss looks to pass the ball in the first half of the game
LSU will still have chances to make that case, but this marks their third consecutive season-opening loss under coach Brian Kelly and their fifth straight overall. LSU’s four-game winning streak from last season was also broken.
“We didn’t play complementary football,” Kelly said. “But what concerns me the most are the personal fouls and selfish penalties.
They’re undisciplined, and that reflects poorly on me. We pride ourselves on running a disciplined program, but we clearly didn’t do a good job there, and it affected the game.”
The Tigers made up about 60% of the crowd at Allegiant Stadium, which had a record attendance of 63,969 and often felt like Baton Rouge West. Some notable figures were present too, including LSU legends Shaquille O’Neal and Daniels with his Heisman Trophy, as well as former USC Heisman winners Marcus Allen and Matt Leinart.
The first half featured two amazing catches. Hudson made a spectacular grab, jumping high and pulling the ball in with one hand, then bringing it into his body for a 24-yard gain to LSU’s 19-yard line.
Zavion Thomas avoids a tackle
This play stood after a video review and led to a 2-yard touchdown run by Marks, putting the Trojans ahead 7-0 four minutes into the second quarter.
LSU’s Kyren Lacy responded with his own impressive catch, twisting and just managing to get his right foot inbounds for a 19-yard touchdown to even the score midway through the period.
Both teams missed key opportunities — the Tigers were stopped on downs after reaching the USC 3-yard line, and Trojans kicker Michael Lantz missed a 29-yard field goal attempt to the right as the first-half clock ran out.
The Trojans could have had an extra 30-40 seconds on their final possession, but Riley chose not to call a timeout before LSU tied the game with a 45-yard field goal by Damian Ramos with 1:08 left.
The game was tight throughout, with the Trojans taking a 20-17 lead with 5:44 left in regulation when Moss connected with Ja’Kobi Lane for a 28-yard touchdown. Ramos’s 31-yard field goal tied the game, leaving 1:47 on the clock.
The defenses at No. 13 LSU and No. 23 Southern California were very weak last season, leading both teams to make big changes, including hiring new coordinators.
Their early efforts seem to be working, especially for USC. The defenses now look quite different from last season when LSU was ranked 108th and USC was 119th nationally.
Both defenses gave their offenses a chance to win on Sunday night, but the Trojans managed to secure a victory, beating the Tigers 27-20 with a touchdown run by Woody Marks with just 8 seconds left.
USC significantly reduced LSU’s offensive output. The Tigers had the highest-scoring offense in the nation last season, averaging 45.5 points per game. Kyren Lacy led LSU with seven catches for 94 yards and a touchdown, but USC managed to limit him in the second half, holding him to only two targets and no receptions.
Solomon Tuliaupupu celebrates after the win
“From early spring all the way to the last practice of fall camp, we have made huge strides as far as running the defense, learning what we’re supposed to do and trusting each other within the defense,” said safety Kamari Ramsey, who led USC with nine tackles.
“The communication has gotten a lot better. Obviously, we have to continue to grow.” Even though the Tigers lost, there are still reasons to be hopeful about their defense.
USC, like LSU, was among the top-scoring teams last season, finishing third with 41.8 points per game.
Coach Brian Kelly of LSU pointed out that their own high-performing offense didn’t do its part against USC, missing several scoring chances. Two of LSU’s red zone trips ended with a field goal and a turnover on downs.
