No. 7 Notre Dame is relying significantly on new quarterback Riley Leonard to secure a spot in the expanded playoff field

Coach Marcus Freeman is starting his third season at Notre Dame in a familiar situation, with a new starting quarterback and a new offensive coordinator.

The changes in college football, including the expanded 12-team playoff field and having a veteran quarterback, could put the seventh-ranked Fighting Irish back in the running for a national championship. They will quickly find out where they stand.

Riley Leonard, a transfer from Duke, is set to make his Notre Dame debut on August 31 at No. 20 Texas A&M.

“The best thing is he’s taking care of the football,” Freeman said about his third different opening-day starter. “We know he can do some things with his legs, but we’ve kind of forced him (to focus on the passing game).

We’ve said, ’Hey, we know you can run the ball. Let’s continue to watch you progress in the passing game, making checks, being able to put the offense in great situations.’”

Notre Dame had a similar plan last season when former Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman led the team to a 10-3 record and a final ranking of No. 14 while averaging 39.1 points per game.

Hartman signed with the NFL’s Washington Commanders when his eligibility ended, and last year’s offensive coordinator, Gerad Parker, is now the head coach at Troy.

Even so, Freeman isn’t starting from scratch. He brought in Leonard, who aims to have a similar impact as Hartman, and hired Mike Denbrock from LSU, where he managed the top offense in the Bowl Subdivision and played a key role in Jayden Daniels’ Heisman Trophy-winning season.

Leonard’s strong performance initially helped the Blue Devils reach the top 20, but an injured right ankle, suffered in a loss to Notre Dame and requiring two offseason surgeries, affected the rest of his season.

As a result, Leonard threw for just 1,102 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions while rushing for 352 yards and four scores in 2023, compared to 2,967 yards passing, 699 yards rushing, and 33 total touchdowns in 2022.

SMU puts the painful ‘death penalty’ past behind as it eagerly anticipates its ACC debut

SMU athletic director Rick Hart gets excited quite easily these days. Whether he’s thinking about the celebration from almost a year ago when SMU joined the Atlantic Coast Conference or what’s coming up on the football field outside his office, Hart shows his emotions clearly.

Even so, Hart admits he can’t really connect with the donors who waited for nearly forty years for the Mustangs to become important again after the severe punishment known as the death penalty imposed by the NCAA. He wasn’t around in 1987 or for the 25 years that followed.

Hart didn’t experience the alumni who distanced themselves from the program due to embarrassment after the recruiting violations, or the reaction nearly ten years later when SMU wasn’t included in the Big 12, which led to the end of the Southwest Conference.

Rhett Lashlee wathces an NCAA college football practice

So, as the Mustangs start their season on Saturday at Nevada and then play their first ACC game at home on September 28 against No. 10 Florida State, there will be many who wondered if these days would ever come.

While they might not expect a return to the glory days of running backs Eric Dickerson and Craig James and quarterback Lance McIlhenny, having a spot at the big table is certainly appreciated.

“I can’t even predict what that’s going to look like, feel like,” Hart said. “Just for the people who do have the point of view and perspective.”

David Miller, chairman of the school’s Board of Trustees, is one of those people. Although Miller, a former SMU basketball player, was living in Denver when the football seasons of 1987-88 were canceled, he was always connected.

Now he’s among those who helped SMU get back into a major conference.

“This is a transformational opportunity for SMU,” Miller said. “It’s an opportunity not only to enhance our athletic programs. It’s an opportunity to, I think, reposition the university’s overall brand.”

Ken Tanigawa claims his third PGA Tour Champions title by winning the Rogers Charity Classic in Calgary

Ken Tanigawa won the Rogers Charity Classic on Sunday, earning his third PGA Tour Champions title with a final round of 6-under 64, which put him two shots ahead of Richard Green.

Tanigawa, who was two strokes behind Green after setting a Canyon Meadows record with a career-best 61 on Saturday, birdied the par-5 15th and 17th holes to secure the win. He finished at 17-under 193.

On Saturday, he also made a hole-in-one on the 210-yard 16th hole with a 5-iron. This win was his first since the 2019 Senior PGA Championship.

Ken Tanigawa lines up a putt

“I’m a bit lost for words,” Tanigawa said. “It’s been a long time since 2019 to be in this position. Time goes by and you wonder if you can win again. To be able to do it, just over the moon.”

Green, who shot a 62 on Saturday, had a 68 on Sunday with bogeys on the par-3 14th and the par-4 17th. The 53-year-old Australian left-hander is still looking for his first win on the 50-and-over tour.

Darren Clarke (65) and Jason Caron (67) tied for third at 14 under, while Mario Tiziani, who is tour star Steve Stricker’s brother-in-law, shot a 67 to finish fifth at 13 under.

Brooks Koepka clinched the LIV Golf Greenbrier title with a playoff victory against Jon Rahm

Brooks Koepka earned his second LIV Golf League win of the year on Sunday by shooting a 7-under 63 at The Greenbrier and defeating Jon Rahm with a par on the first playoff hole.

Rahm, who lost a four-shot lead at the Olympics two weeks ago, began the final round with a two-shot advantage and finished with a 65. He made birdies on two of his last three holes to tie Koepka at 19-under 191, forcing a playoff.

In the playoff at the par-3 18th hole, Rahm ended up over the green and in a bunker, with one foot in the sand. He managed to get out to about 25 feet, but his par putt to continue the playoff just missed.

Koepka had previously won LIV Golf Singapore this year and now has five career victories since the league started in June 2022.

Jason Kokrak, who also shot 63, finished third on his own.

Richard Bland, a 51-year-old from England who won two senior majors this year, needed a birdie on the 18th to tie for the lead. Instead, he made a bogey for a 65 and ended up two shots behind.

Koepka’s team, Smash, also won the team title by three shots.

Haaland scores in his 100th appearance as Manchester City defeats Chelsea 2-0 in the Premier League

Erling Haaland now has 91 goals in 100 games for Manchester City.

In his 100th match for City, Haaland scored the first goal in a 2-0 victory at Chelsea on Sunday, starting City’s quest for a fifth consecutive Premier League title.

This goal marked his fifth in three season openers since joining City in 2022, showing that he is in top form after a summer without international play.

City manager Pep Guardiola noted, “I had a feeling that he feels better than last season at this stage. He feels good, and the goal was magnificent.”

Haaland scored in the 18th minute, and Mateo Kovacic added a goal from outside the area in the 84th minute, making it a tough debut for Chelsea’s new coach Enzo Maresca.

On the same day, Brentford won 2-1 against Crystal Palace after a controversial refereeing call in the first half.

At Stamford Bridge, Haaland’s goal came when he received the ball on the edge of the box, maneuvered between Levi Colwill and Marc Cucurella, and lifted the ball past Robert Sanchez.

“I knew exactly what to do, I think it was a really good goal,” Haaland said.

Chelsea struggled with clinical finishing once again, despite spending heavily over the summer. Nicolas Jackson had a goal ruled out for offside just before halftime and later missed a close-range volley, leading to his substitution for 18-year-old Marc Guiu.

Chelsea coach Maresca defends his choice to make Fernandez the captain following a racist chant incident

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca defended his choice to make midfielder Enzo Fernandez the captain for the team’s first Premier League game of the season, despite Fernandez being filmed singing a racist chant during the offseason.

Maresca’s first match ended with a 2-0 loss to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. However, many questions after the game focused on Fernandez and Raheem Sterling, who was unhappy about not being included in the matchday squad.

Fernandez took on the captain’s role in place of the injured Reece James, even though he had been criticized by Chelsea teammate Wesley Fofana. Fofana called the Argentina players’ chant “uninhibited racism” after Fernandez posted a video of the chant on social media. The French Football Federation also filed a complaint to FIFA.

Enzo Maresca leaves the field after the match

Maresca said Fernandez had acknowledged his mistake and apologized to his teammates, and he believes it’s time to move forward.

“The reason why (he was captain) is because I can see that his teammates, they recognize him like a reference, like a captain,” said the Italian coach. “I don’t know about you but I did mistakes in the past, and I recognized (it). And I think as a human being if you did a mistake and you recognize (it), you are not going to be punished your whole life.”

As with other Premier League games this weekend, the match began with all players taking a knee to support the ongoing fight against racism in soccer.

Conte has challenges ahead after Napoli “melted like snow in the sun” against Verona

Antonio Conte has a lot of work ahead of him.

Conte, who became Napoli’s fifth coach in just over a year when he was hired in June, saw his new team suffer a 3-0 defeat at Hellas Verona in his first Serie A match on Sunday.

“We melted like snow in the sun after the first goal,” Conte said. “We should apologize to the Neapolitan people, who follow us with passion. As the coach, I take full responsibility. The performance in the second half was unacceptable.

“We should be ashamed, and I have to be ashamed as the coach. Those who know me know that my heart is bleeding today, and I hope some of the players are feeling the same way, which would at least mean we are moving in the right direction.”

Dailon Livramento and Daniel Mosquera — twice — scored on their league debuts to give Verona the win in the first match of the Italian league season. Napoli also faced more trouble with key player Khvicha Kvaratskhelia going off due to injury.

Mattia scores a goal

Napoli has struggled since Luciano Spalletti left last summer after winning the club’s first title in over 30 years. The team finished 10th last season and hoped for better results under Conte, who previously led Juventus and Inter Milan to titles.

However, Napoli drew 0-0 with Serie B side Modena in the Italian Cup on Conte’s debut, advancing on penalties, before the disappointing performance on Sunday.

Conte’s team had some good chances early in the match against Verona with Matteo Politano, André-Frank Anguissa, and Stanislav Lobotka, and nearly took the lead in first-half stoppage time.

Verona defender Martin Frese made a poorly short back pass to goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipò, which Kvaratskhelia almost capitalized on, but Jackson Tchatchoua made a crucial last-minute tackle.

Kvaratskhelia had to leave the game right after, appearing to show signs of dizziness.

Frese made another poor back pass shortly after that forced Montipò to make an acrobatic clearance.

Verona came out with a new energy after halftime, and Grigoris Kastanos narrowly missed scoring with its first real chance of the match. Verona took the lead when Livramento managed to finish a cross from Darko Lazović by tapping the ball into the bottom right corner.

Mattia Zaccagni celebrates after scoring a goal

Anguissa hit the crossbar in the 61st minute, but Verona doubled its lead when it won the ball in midfield. Ondrej Duda passed it to substitute Mosquera, who scored past Alex Meret in the 75th minute.

Mosquera had been on the field for less than two minutes. The Colombian forward scored again in stoppage time after being left completely unmarked by the Napoli defense.

Verona was one of only two teams to win in the opening round. The other team was Lazio, which came back from an early goal to defeat newly promoted Venezia 3-1.

In Sardinia, both Roma and Cagliari hit the woodwork and had other chances but ended up drawing 0-0. Bologna also drew 1-1 at home against Udinese.

On Saturday, there were four draws, including for defending champion Inter Milan and AC Milan.

Juventus will host Como on Monday, and Atalanta will visit Lecce.

Rennes defeats big-spending Lyon 3-0 in the French league

Rennes achieved a strong 3-0 win over big-spending Lyon in the French league on Sunday.

Benjamin Bourigeaud scored first in the 19th minute with a free kick that was deflected. A little over a minute later, Amine Gouiri increased Rennes’ lead following a quick counterattack.

Henrik Meister, a Danish striker who joined Rennes this summer, completed the win with a goal in stoppage time to cap off a dominant display.

Lyon, which had a tough season last year, has struggled again this season despite heavy spending in the transfer market. Forward Georges Mikautadze, bought for 18.5 million euros ($20 million) after a strong Euro 2024 performance with Georgia, missed a penalty on Sunday.

Lyon central defender Moussa Niakhaté, signed for 32 million euros ($35 million) from Nottingham Forest, was responsible for two of the three goals Lyon conceded.

Lorenz Assignon controls the ball in the game

In other matches, Auxerre marked its return to Ligue 1 with a 2-1 win over Nice at Stade de l’Abbé Deschamps. Nice took the lead with a header from Mohamed-Ali Cho, but Auxerre equalized before halftime with a goal from Rayan Raveloson. Lasso Coulibaly scored the winning goal in stoppage time.

Lens won 1-0 against promoted side Angers, with Wesley Saïd scoring in the first half, marking a successful start for new coach Will Still.

Toulouse and Nantes ended their match in a 0-0 draw, while Montpellier and Strasbourg also drew 1-1.

Kylian Mbappé did not score in his Spanish league debut as Real Madrid played to a 1-1 draw with Mallorca

Defending champion Real Madrid could only manage a 1-1 draw at Mallorca in Kylian Mbappé’s first Spanish league match on Sunday.

In his second game with Madrid after his midweek debut, Mbappé did not score. He had previously scored in Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti used the same lineup that won against Atalanta, with Rodrygo, Vinicius Junior, and Mbappé leading the attack.

“They change position from time to time,” Ancelotti said about Vinicius and Mbappé. “Sometimes Mbappé plays more centrally and sometimes one of the two has to take this flank, without a specific plan. It depends on how they feel about it.”

Rodrygo scored for Madrid 13 minutes into the match, but Mallorca equalized with a goal from Vedat Muriqi in the 53rd minute.

Kylian Mbappe takes the ball forward

“We got off to a good start, taking the lead and then had a chance to score a second goal,” Ancelotti said. “We didn’t find balance in the second half. We could have lost because there was no balance at the back.

It wasn’t a good game. We need to defend better. We’re a very attacking team, but defensive balance is a crucial factor.”

Madrid defender Ferland Mendy was sent off late in the second half for a foul on Muriqi.

“I don’t want to make excuses for anything, but we just need to do better and with a better attitude,” Ancelotti said. “We can learn a lot from this match. It’s clear where our problems might come from.”

Rafael Nadal, who is from Mallorca, was among the spectators at the Son Moix Stadium.

Mallorca’s players gave a guard of honor to the Super Cup winners, applauding the Madrid team as they entered the field before the game.

Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer retires from international football after 94 appearances

After ten years as Switzerland’s top goalkeeper, Yann Sommer announced his retirement from the national team on Monday at the age of 35. He will now focus on his career with Inter Milan.

The Swiss soccer federation’s announcement means Gregor Kobel from Borussia Dortmund will likely become the new first-choice goalkeeper.

Sommer played in three World Cups and three European Championships with Switzerland after making his debut in 2012.

His last game was a penalty shootout loss to England following a 1-1 draw in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals last month in Germany.

One of Sommer’s greatest achievements for the national team was saving Kylian Mbappé’s penalty, which helped Switzerland win a shootout against France after a 3-3 draw in the round of 16 at Euro 2020.

Switzerland’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer acknowledges the crowd

Sommer contributed to Inter winning Serie A in his first season in Italy and has also won league titles in Germany with Bayern Munich and four times in Switzerland with Basel.

Gregor Kobel, who is 26, has made five appearances for Switzerland, including one at the 2022 World Cup, where he played in a 3-2 win over Serbia in Qatar while Sommer was out with a severe cold.

Switzerland’s next matches are on September 5 and 8 against Denmark and Euro 2024 champion Spain in the top group of the UEFA Nations League.

Caitlin Clark sets a new WNBA rookie assists record as the Indiana Fever defeat the Seattle Storm 92-75

Kelsey Mitchell scored 27 points, Caitlin Clark contributed 23 points and nine assists, and Lexie Hull added 12 of her career-high 22 points in the fourth quarter on Sunday, leading the Indiana Fever to a 92-75 victory over the Seattle Storm.

Clark set a new WNBA rookie record with 232 assists this season, breaking the previous mark of 224 set by Ticha Penicheiro in 1998. The top pick in the 2024 draft has scored at least 20 points in five of her last six games.

She is averaging 23.7 points and shooting 47% from the field, along with 11.7 assists during this period.

Mitchell made 10 of 19 shots from the field and 5 of 8 from three-point range, while Hull was 8-of-10 shooting and made a career-high six 3-pointers on seven attempts. Aliyah Boston grabbed 15 rebounds, scored nine points, and set a career high with eight assists for Indiana.

Jewell Loyd scored a jumper to cut the Storm’s deficit to 61-60 with 9 minutes left. About a minute later, Indiana’s Damiris Dantas made a free throw, Hull hit two 3-pointers 35 seconds apart, and Mitchell added another 3 before Boston hit a short jumper to complete a 14-5 run, making the score 75-65 with 5:51 remaining.

Skylar Diggins goes up the basket

Skylar Diggins-Smith scored two quick buckets to narrow the gap to six points just 28 seconds later, but Hull hit back-to-back 3s in a 31-second span, sparking a 15-2 run. Clark added another 3-pointer and then assisted on 3s by Mitchell and Dantas, with Dantas’s shot giving the Fever a 90-71 lead with 2:24 left.

Loyd led Seattle (17-10) with 26 points, Diggins-Smith scored 15, and Nneka Ogwumike added 14 points, nine rebounds, and four steals. The trio combined to make only 20 of 54 shots, as the Storm shot 38.9% (28 of 72) overall.

Indiana (13-15) has matched its win total from the 2023 season with 12 games remaining.

The Fever have won two games in a row after the month-long break for the Paris Olympics, winning four of their last five games and improving to 10-5 after starting the season with just three wins in their first 11 games.

Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon has once more challenged Dearica Hamby’s allegations of mistreatment during her pregnancy

Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon has once again rejected former Aces player Dearica Hamby’s claim that the Aces mistreated her and traded her because of her pregnancy.

Hamby, who was traded to Los Angeles in January 2023, had been with the Aces from 2015 to 2022, starting when the team was still in San Antonio. She won the league’s Sixth Player of the Year award in 2019 and 2020 and earned a bronze medal in 3X3 basketball at the Paris Olympics.

Hamby made her accusations public last year and filed a lawsuit in federal court against the WNBA and her former team last Monday, alleging discrimination and retaliation.

“I’ve been in either the WNBA or the NBA for 25 years,” Hammon said Sunday after the Aces defeated Hamby and the Sparks 87-71. “I’ve never had an HR complaint. Never, not once.

I still didn’t, actually, because Dearica didn’t file any. She didn’t file with the players’ union, she didn’t file with the WNBA. Those are facts.

Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon calls the players in the game

“It’s also factual that nobody made a call about trading her until Atlanta called us in January (2023). That’s a fact. So … it just didn’t happen.”

Hammon had previously denied the allegations, explaining in May 2023 that Hamby was traded for strategic reasons, particularly to allow the team to sign potential future Hall of Famer Candace Parker.

“We made the decision to move Hamby because we could get three players for her one contract, and we wanted to bring in three more people,” Hammon said at that time. “I think it’s very clear (with) who we signed on why we made the move.”

The WNBA looked into the issue and in May 2023 suspended Hammon for two games without pay. The team also lost their first-round draft pick for 2025 due to providing improper benefits related to Hamby.
