Rafael Nadal has indicated that the 2024 ATP Tour season is likely to mark his final chapter as a professional tennis player.
Nadal faced significant setbacks in 2023 due to a hip injury that necessitated arthroscopic surgery, keeping him sidelined for most of the year. Following an intensive rehabilitation period, the Spanish icon made a highly anticipated comeback at the 2024 Brisbane International.
Showing promising form in his initial matches, the 14-time French Open victor secured victories in straight sets. However, he encountered a setback during the semifinals against Jordan Thompson, sustaining a muscle tear in his left hip and subsequently losing the match in three sets.
As a consequence, Nadal opted out of the Australian Open, citing his body’s unpreparedness for the demands of five-set tennis. Additionally, he will be absent from the upcoming Doha ExxonMobile Open.
His next scheduled appearance is set for an exhibition event against Carlos Alcaraz in Las Vegas this March, with hopes of competing at the Indian Wells Masters.
In an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena COPE on Wednesday (February 14), Nadal disclosed his intentions for the upcoming season, hinting at retirement. However, he emphasized a cautious approach, withholding a definitive proclamation until the French Open later this year.
“This is likely to be my final year, although I cannot confirm it entirely. I will take it day by day and make an official announcement before Roland Garros,” Nadal shared with Cardena COPE. “I am allowing myself a few months of discretion. As we know, unforeseen circumstances can arise, so I am refraining from making firm decisions months in advance following a year without competition.”
