Andy Roddick has criticized Holger Rune’s coaching setup, labeling it as ‘unorganized’ following the sudden departures of Boris Becker and Severin Luthi from the Dane’s camp within a week.
Rune enlisted Becker and Luthi in October and December 2023 respectively, but their tenures proved to be short-lived. The changes came shortly after Rune’s defeat to Arthur Cazaux in the second round of the Australian Open.
Initially parting ways with Luthi, a former coach of Roger Federer, Rune then saw Becker announce his exit via social media just days later.
On the Served With Andy Roddick podcast, Roddick hinted at disarray within Rune’s team, particularly noting the abrupt changes involving both Luthi and Becker:
“With Rune, it just feels like it’s unorganized, and Severin Luthi too. The focus is going to be on Boris, but Severin was Roger’s guy,” Roddick commented.
Roddick also expressed concerns that prominent coaches might hesitate to join Rune’s team given the turnover rate. Since August 2023, Rune has seen three coaches leave, including Patrick Mouratoglou, Severin Luthi, and Boris Becker.
“I don’t know what he does from here. I don’t know who he’s interviewing. But also, if you’re a great coach right now, and you’re entertaining this, that has to be factored in right? The fact that he’s had 3 or 4 different coaches in 4-5 months, it tells you that there’s something that’s difficult behind the scenes,” Roddick added.
