The much-anticipated film debut of former UFC dual-weight champion Conor McGregor is scheduled for March 21st. McGregor, widely known as ‘The Notorious,’ has been absent from the MMA scene since his trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier in July 2021, a fight in which he famously suffered a leg injury in the final seconds of the first round.
Following the injury, McGregor left the USADA testing pool to focus on his recovery, during which he landed his first role in a movie.
In late 2022, McGregor was cast in the remake of the 1989 classic ‘Road House,’ originally starring Patrick Swayze. The project had undergone several changes over the years, with Ronda Rousey initially linked to the film.
However, the cast saw significant revisions, and McGregor joined Academy Award-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead roles. Both men filmed scenes in front of a live audience during UFC 285 in Las Vegas, with Gyllenhaal participating in a fight scene in the octagon alongside former fighter Jay Hieron.
Despite limited details about the project since then, the movie’s poster was recently released, accompanied by the announcement of its release date.
On March 21st, the film will be available on Amazon Prime Video, marking McGregor’s cinematic debut through an online streaming platform rather than a traditional theatrical release.
The film, described as an “adrenaline-fueled reimagining of the 80s cult classic,” follows ex-UFC fighter Dalton (played by Gyllenhaal) working as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse, uncovering unexpected challenges in what initially appears to be a paradise.
In addition to McGregor’s venture into acting, there have been recent speculations about his return to the UFC. Earlier this month, McGregor claimed on social media that he had signed a deal to fight Michael Chandler on June 29th.
However, UFC President Dana White contradicted this announcement during the UFC 297 post-fight press conference, stating that McGregor’s return had not yet been finalized.
White emphasized that the talks were not close and asserted that any official announcement about McGregor’s return would come from the UFC itself.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding McGregor’s return to the cage, fans can anticipate seeing him on their screens in just a few months with the release of ‘Road House’ in March.
Whether viewers are intrigued by the film’s premise or excited about McGregor’s foray into acting, it’s clear that the former UFC champion is gearing up for an eventful year.
