Former Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is in the final stages of securing a two-year agreement to join UCLA’s coaching staff as the Bruins’ associate head coach and offensive coordinator, sources informed ESPN on Saturday night.

This move signifies a notable addition for new UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster, who aims to instill an NFL-inspired approach within the Bruins’ football program. It also represents a homecoming for Bieniemy, who grew up in the region and previously served as a Bruins assistant from 2003 to 2005.

“Southern California holds a special place in my heart,” Bieniemy expressed in an email on Saturday. “Having attended high school there and commenced my professional journey in the league with the Chargers, it’s truly gratifying to return to UCLA, where I previously worked.”

Despite receiving offers to remain in the NFL, including interviews for the Commanders’ head coaching position and two other offensive coordinator roles, Bieniemy opted to take his time and transition back to collegiate coaching.

“I’ve engaged in numerous discussions and interviews with various teams, receiving recognition and praise,” Bieniemy stated. “While I cannot speak to the reasons behind certain decisions, I want to clarify that it wasn’t due to any shortcomings on my part. My principles and values remain steadfast, and my decision was not solely motivated by financial considerations. Timing plays a significant role in life, and at this juncture, this opportunity allows me to continue shaping and leading young men while pursuing my passion and dreams without compromising my integrity.”

This appointment marks Bieniemy’s return to college coaching since his tenure as Colorado’s offensive coordinator from 2011 to 2012. Foster prioritized hiring a coach with Bieniemy’s extensive background, recognizing the value he brings to shaping UCLA’s offensive identity.

With Bieniemy’s arrival, Foster, embarking on his inaugural season as head coach, takes a crucial step in defining UCLA’s football philosophy, particularly on the offensive side of the game.

“I’m thrilled to support DeShaun in his role as head coach, working alongside him and under his leadership,” Bieniemy expressed. “My objective is to contribute to his success as a head coach in our profession. This opportunity allows my family and me to return to a place we once called home.”

Bringing 16 years of NFL experience to the Bruins, Bieniemy served as the Commanders’ offensive coordinator in the 2023 season and achieved two Super Bowl victories during his tenure as the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022.

With a coaching record that includes five consecutive conference championship game appearances and three Super Bowl appearances, Bieniemy is confident his background will resonate with prospective student-athletes considering UCLA, especially as the university prepares for its transition to the Big Ten Conference.

“My aim is to generate enthusiasm among potential student-athletes about joining UCLA as we gear up for our move to the Big Ten Conference in recruiting,” he noted.

Highlighting successful transitions from the NFL to college coaching by figures such as Nick Saban, Jim Harbaugh, Bill O’Brien, and Kliff Kingsbury, Bieniemy embraces his decision to shift gears, viewing it as a new challenge to overcome.

“I depart from my time with the Commanders without regrets,” Bieniemy emphasized. “Contrary to speculation, I wasn’t dismissed; rather, I made a conscious choice to move on. Every experience is a learning opportunity, and I’m eager to impart my knowledge and passion for football to these young men. My commitment to excellence remains unwavering, and I’m energized for this next chapter. Let’s get to work.”
