Mets Rumors: J.D. Martinez Having ‘Dialogue’ With NYM in 2024 MLB Free Agency

The New York Mets seem to be actively pursuing another power hitter this offseason.

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, there has been ongoing communication between the Mets and free-agent slugger J.D. Martinez as spring training approaches.

While Mets president of baseball operations, David Stearns, has been busy making moves such as signing pitchers Jake Diekman, Adam Ottavino, and Sean Manaea, the team has yet to secure a big bat to complement star slugger Pete Alonso.

Despite already having the second-highest payroll in baseball as they head into the 2024 season, SNY’s Andy Martino recently reported that the Mets are hesitant to pursue a designated hitter unless the asking price significantly drops.

Martinez’s contract demands for this offseason remain uncertain, but after a strong performance last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he enjoyed a resurgence at the plate, he is likely seeking a favorable deal.

In the previous season, the 36-year-old Martinez boasted a .271/.321/.572 slash line with 33 home runs and 103 RBI in 113 games, earning himself an All-Star selection. This marked a significant improvement from his performance with the Boston Red Sox in 2022, where he managed just 16 home runs and 62 RBI in 139 games.

Adding a hitter of Martinez’s caliber could greatly benefit the Mets, especially slotting him behind Alonso in the batting order, which could create additional pressure on opposing pitchers and boost offensive production.

Moreover, Martinez’s extensive experience as he enters his 14th major league season and his World Series victory make him an invaluable veteran presence for young talents like Brett Baty, Mark Vientos, and Francisco Álvarez.

With spring training fast approaching, pitchers and catchers set to report on Feb. 12 and position players on Feb. 17, it remains to be seen whether the Mets will intensify their pursuit of Martinez in the coming week.
