Jordan Spieth faced disqualification after the second round of the Genesis Invitational on Friday due to signing an inaccurate scorecard.
Spieth, a renowned three-time major champion, mistakenly recorded a par on the 245-yard par-3 4th hole at Riviera Country Club despite actually making a bogey following a missed 5-foot putt.
Acknowledging the error later that Friday in a post on X, Spieth admitted fault: “Today, I signed for an incorrect scorecard and stepped out of the scoring area, after thinking I went through all procedures to make sure it was correct,” wrote Spieth, who clinched an NCAA title with Texas at Riviera.
“Rules are rules, and I take full responsibility. I love this tournament and golf course as much as any on @PGATOUR so it hurts to not have a run at the weekend. Really appreciated the support in LA.”
Spieth’s round of 2-over 73 on Friday followed an opening round of 5-under 66 on Thursday, culminating in his disqualification.
After enduring a double bogey on the 18th hole that brought him back to 3-under for the tournament, Spieth swiftly exchanged fist-bumps with his playing partners and their caddies before dashing up the steps to the Riviera clubhouse.
Earlier reports from Sky Sports hinted at Spieth not feeling well during the day.
In 2022, Spieth faced disqualification from the JP McManus Pro-Am for picking up his ball on the 14th green before holing out.
This action stemmed from his misunderstanding that he didn’t need to complete the hole since his score wouldn’t contribute to the team tally. However, the pro-am also included an individual leaderboard for professionals, leading to Spieth’s disqualification for not finishing the hole.
This season, Spieth has garnered two top-10 finishes, notably securing third place at The Sentry in Hawaii. Friday’s round of 73 marked Spieth’s worst performance of the season and only his second round in the 70s for 2024.
