Bryson Stott started the ninth inning with a home run against All-Star closer Edwin Díaz and then scored the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning as the MLB-leading Philadelphia Phillies defeated the New York Mets 5-4 on Monday night.
The Phillies were behind 4-2 when Díaz allowed Stott’s home run — the fourth time Díaz has given up a home run this season. Díaz had only given up three home runs in 2022 before missing last season due to a knee injury sustained while celebrating a win for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic.
After Stott’s home run, Díaz allowed a single to pinch-hitter Kody Clemens — the first time Philadelphia had a pinch hit this season in 16 attempts — and walked Brandon Marsh.
Then, with two outs, Díaz walked Whit Merrifield before hitting Alec Bohm with a pitch.
“That’s one of the best closers in the game, and Stott hit the ball hard,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “Finally, we got a pinch hit, which was a good moment. We put some pressure on Díaz.”
Díaz hadn’t lost a two-run lead in a save situation since May 24, 2022, against the San Francisco Giants. He threw 30 pitches on Monday, his most since a 35-pitch outing against the St. Louis Cardinals on May 19, 2022, facing eight batters, his most since facing nine against the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 11, 2021.
