Andrey Rublev

Alexander Bublik has advocated for the replacement of line judges with electronic line-calling systems in tennis, following Andrey Rublev’s default in the Dubai Tennis Championships semifinal for confronting an official.

Bublik and Rublev engaged in a fiercely contested match on Friday, March 1, vying for a spot in the Dubai final. Despite Rublev clinching the first set in a tiebreak, Bublik fought back to claim the second set similarly, setting the stage for a tense decider.

The match remained evenly poised until Rublev expressed frustration towards a line judge over a disputed call during the 11th game of the deciding set. His confrontation led to allegations of verbal abuse, resulting in a default by the chair umpire and granting Bublik passage to the final.

While Bublik acknowledged the decision, he emphasized the significance of players in tennis and suggested that removing umpires would address many issues.

“If we take the umpire out, we cannot take off Andrey. That is the thing. We cannot take off players. Players will be there. It’s tennis because of the players, because we are playing this sport, not the opposite way around. We can take any umpire away, and that would solve many issues,” Bublik stated.

He further highlighted the effectiveness of electronic line-calling systems in preventing such controversies, citing their regular use in tournaments as evidence of their success in maintaining order on the court.
