If you can’t outplay them, consider recruiting them. It appears the 49ers contemplated this approach after parting ways with defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

According to a report by ESPN’s Dan Graziano, the 49ers explored the possibility of bringing Steve Spagnuolo over from the Chiefs.

Spagnuolo was a free agent as his contract with the Chiefs was coming to an end. Despite the opportunity to join any team, he opted to extend his tenure with the Chiefs.

Under Spagnuolo’s guidance, the Chiefs have emerged victorious against the 49ers in two out of the last five Super Bowls, namely Super Bowl LIV and Super Bowl LVIII.

While Coach Kyle Shanahan appeared inclined to maintain the Seattle/Cover 3 defensive strategy, he seemed willing to make an exception if it meant acquiring Spagnuolo’s expertise.

Spagnuolo has a track record of crafting exceptional defensive game plans, particularly in Super Bowl matchups. His strategic prowess could have provided a significant advantage for the 49ers, especially if they were to face off against the Chiefs again in the NFL Championship game.

Since 2019, Spagnuolo has served as the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator, showcasing his ability to devise effective strategies to contain quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

After a brief hiatus from football in 2018 following his tenure with the Giants, Spagnuolo returned to the NFL scene in 2019, taking over the defensive reins from Bob Sutton.

With three Super Bowl rings to his name, including the memorable upset victory against the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, Spagnuolo’s wealth of experience and success make him a sought-after asset in the league.
