The Atlanta Braves made a roster move on Friday, reassigning Ken Giles to their minor league camp, thus concluding his attempt to secure a spot on the opening-day roster.
Giles, a former closer with 115 career saves across his time with Philadelphia, Houston, and Toronto, joined the Braves on a non-roster deal, aiming to revive his injury-plagued career.
The 33-year-old right-hander has seen limited action in the majors since 2019, making just nine appearances.
During spring training with the Braves, Giles pitched three innings across three outings. Despite two solid performances, he yielded a run in his most recent appearance against Boston.
It’s anticipated he will begin the season with Triple-A Gwinnett, with a chance for promotion to Atlanta contingent upon his continued health and performance.
Notably, Giles played a pivotal role in Houston’s 2017 World Series-winning campaign, securing 34 saves.
In addition to Giles, the Braves also sent left-handed reliever Ray Kerr and outfielder J.P. Martínez to Gwinnett, trimming their big league camp roster to 42 players.
