Tyler Adams was on the field with his 2-month-old son Jax, feeling ecstatic. The 25-year-old midfielder had just scored an incredible goal, leading the United States to a 2-0 victory over Mexico on Sunday night and securing their third consecutive CONCACAF Nations League title.

“People have doubts, but when we work together, we keep improving,” Adams said. Adams scored from about 35 yards in his first start in over a year, receiving a pass from Weston McKennie and skillfully curling a shot past the diving goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Reyna, who had limited playing time this season, scored his eighth international goal in the 63rd minute. Christian Pulisic’s cross was blocked, but the ball deflected off Haji Wright back to Johan Vásquez, who headed a clearance attempt. Reyna capitalized on the opportunity and beat Ochoa.

U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter inspired his team by referencing Michael Jordan and the 1991-93 Chicago Bulls’ three-peat. “The Jordan slide, when he’s holding up the three fingers with the trophy,” Berhalter said, “we Photoshopped the Nations League trophy into the same picture with Michael Jordan.”

Next, the U.S. will compete in the Copa América against Bolivia, Panama, and Uruguay. Reyna, chosen as the top player, and Matt Turner, named the best goalkeeper, are optimistic about the team’s momentum heading into the Copa América.

Berhalter and Reyna had a disagreement during the 2022 World Cup, but they have since resolved their differences and are focused on the team’s success.

The U.S. remains undefeated against Mexico in their last seven encounters. The match faced interruptions due to offensive chants from the crowd, but play eventually resumed. Adams, recovering from injury, returned to the field recently and is gradually increasing his playing time.

Despite his desire to play more, Adams understands the importance of his long-term health and respects the minute restriction set by the team.

Looking ahead, both teams are preparing for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
