In a tense opening game of the Western Conference playoff series, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s standout performance led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a narrow 94-92 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. Gilgeous-Alexander’s 28-point haul included a crucial go-ahead basket in the final minute, securing the win for the Thunder and marking their first home playoff victory since 2019.

Despite a last-second attempt by CJ McCollum of the Pelicans, who missed an off-balance 3-pointer, the Thunder managed to maintain their lead and clinch the win. Jalen Williams contributed 19 points, while Chet Holmgren put up an impressive double-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists. The Thunder now look to capitalize on their Game 1 success as they prepare to host Game 2 on Wednesday night.

Trey Murphy III led the scoring for the Pelicans with 21 points, followed closely by McCollum with 20. However, the Pelicans felt the absence of Zion Williamson, sidelined due to a strained left hamstring, throughout the game. Despite their efforts, they fell short against a determined Thunder side led by Gilgeous-Alexander’s clutch performance.

The game reached a dramatic climax as Gilgeous-Alexander sank an off-balance jumper with 32.5 seconds remaining, breaking a tie and earning a crucial free throw after being fouled. With the crowd rallying behind him with chants of “M-V-P!”, Gilgeous-Alexander’s composure under pressure proved pivotal in securing the Thunder’s narrow victory. Holmgren’s late free throw sealed the win, setting the stage for a thrilling series between the two teams.
