Free agent outfielder Tommy Pham has agreed to terms with the Chicago White Sox, according to MLB.com’s Juan Toribio. Pham’s deal is reported to be worth $3 million, with the potential to earn an additional $1.5 million through performance bonuses. The signing comes as a boost for the White Sox, who are currently struggling with a 2-14 start to the season and multiple key players sidelined due to injuries.
The agreement, first reported by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, sees Pham joining the White Sox on a minor league deal. This arrangement gives Chicago flexibility, as they must add him to the roster by April 25, after which Pham can request his release if not promoted. Additionally, if Pham is traded, he stands to receive $500,000.
Pham’s performance in 2023 showcased his value as a contributor, with 109 hits, 16 home runs, and 68 RBI while split between the New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks. Notably, during the Diamondbacks’ World Series run, Pham delivered 17 hits, three home runs, and four RBI, maintaining a .279 batting average.
Entering free agency this offseason, Pham held out for a contract he deemed fitting, even if it meant potentially missing regular-season games. Despite his solid performance last year, his age of 36 raised concerns among teams, leading to hesitancy in committing to a long-term deal. Consequently, Pham will initially start with the White Sox in the minor leagues until the team decides to promote him.
With injuries plaguing the White Sox, including absences of key players like Eloy Jiménez, Luis Robert Jr., and Yoán Moncada, Pham’s arrival offers a glimmer of hope for the struggling team. While he may not immediately join the major league roster, the White Sox are counting on Pham’s presence to inject much-needed energy and talent into their lineup as they aim to turn their season around.
