Bruins come from behind to defeat Flames with David Pastrnak’s overtime goal

David Pastrnak scored the winning goal at 4:20 of overtime, helping the Boston Bruins come back from two two-goal deficits to defeat the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Pastrnak received a pass from Charlie McAvoy in the right circle and fired the game-winning shot off the post past Calgary goalie Dustin Wolf.

Elias Lindholm scored Boston’s first goal and also added an assist against his former team. Morgan Geekie and Marc McLaughlin each scored in the third period to tie the game and force overtime.

Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves for the Bruins, who had lost the first two games of their five-game road trip but have now won two straight and six of their last eight games.

Calgary scored all three of its goals in the second period. Matt Coronato and Nazem Kadri scored 27 seconds apart to give the Flames an early lead. Ryan Lomberg’s first goal with Calgary made it 3-1 heading into the second intermission.

Wolf stopped 31 shots for Calgary, which has won two and lost two of its last four games.

Boston outshot Calgary 35-23, with 15 shots in the third period and four more in overtime. The Bruins also won 68 percent of their faceoffs.

Boston Bruins (NHL)

The Bruins quickly closed the gap in the third period. Geekie scored on a rebound at 4:14, and McLaughlin tied the game at 6:51 with a rebound goal after his own one-time shot was saved.

Boston continued to apply pressure, and Swayman made a key save halfway through the third period, stopping Jakob Pelletier’s backhand attempt on a short-handed breakaway.

Coronato gave Calgary the lead just 54 seconds into the second period, scoring from the left circle off Blake Coleman’s pass. Kadri extended the lead at 1:21, scoring his fourth goal in four games after receiving a pass from Jonathan Huberdeau.

Lindholm scored for Boston at 6:31, firing a wrist shot past Wolf to make it 2-1. Lomberg’s goal at 17:19, off a deflection of Connor Zary’s shot, gave the Flames a 3-1 lead before Boston’s comeback in the third.

David Pastrnak celebrated a milestone night as the Boston Bruins dominated the Vancouver Canucks in a big 6-1 victory

David Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha, both from the Czech Republic, each scored a goal and combined for seven points to help the Boston Bruins easily defeat the Vancouver Canucks 5-1 on Saturday night.

Pastrnak (one goal, three assists) reached 400 career assists, becoming the 11th player in Bruins history to do so. He helped set up Boston’s first three goals before scoring just 26 seconds into the third period.

Zacha (one goal, two assists) and Morgan Geekie (one goal, one assist) also had multiple points, while Brad Marchand and Marc McLaughlin added goals. The Bruins have won five of their last seven games, even after starting 0-2-0 on this five-game road trip.

The Bruins built 2-0 and 4-0 leads at the intermissions, with goaltender Jeremy Swayman stopping 19 shots. For Vancouver, which has only won one of its last four games (1-2-1), Max Sasson scored his first NHL goal, and Thatcher Demko made 23 saves in his second start since returning from a knee injury.

Boston came out strong in the first period, getting the game’s first power play and finishing with a 16-4 advantage in shots, including 11-1 to start. Marchand scored first at 5:12, finishing a great power-play setup with a pass from Elias Lindholm. Geekie made it 2-0 when Pastrnak set him up at 8:08.

Boston Bruins (NHL)

In the second period, Boston took a 3-0 lead just 1:12 in. Pastrnak won a faceoff and fed Zacha, who made a backhand-to-forehand move to score. Vancouver began to push back midway through the period, with Swayman making a great save on a Conor Garland one-timer.

Boston added to its lead at 11:49 when McLaughlin scored his first goal of the season, shooting a rebound through Demko’s five-hole. Swayman kept a shutout intact through two periods, making a big save on Kiefer Sherwood late in the second.

In the third period, it took just 26 seconds for the Bruins to score again, with Charlie McAvoy setting up Pastrnak for a wraparound goal. It would have been 6-0 if not for Demko stopping Cole Koepke’s breakaway.

Vancouver finally got on the board with 9:47 left in the game when Sasson scored, assisted by J.T. Miller, to break Swayman’s shutout.

Kraken deliver another blowout defeat to Bruins

Oliver Bjorkstrand scored two goals, and Philipp Grubauer made 33 saves to help the Seattle Kraken defeat the Boston Bruins 5-1 on Thursday night.

Jared McCann had one goal and one assist, while Jaden Schwartz and Vince Dunn also scored for the Kraken, who have won four of their last six games. Shane Wright contributed two assists.

Brad Marchand scored a penalty shot for the Bruins, who have now lost their first two games on a five-game Western road trip by a combined score of 13-2. Joonas Korpisalo saved 16 of 20 shots.

Bjorkstrand and Schwartz both scored their 50th goals for the Kraken in the first period.

Seattle started strong with a four-minute power play early in the game after Boston’s David Pastrnak was penalized for high-sticking Jamie Oleksiak just 16 seconds into the match. Bjorkstrand scored eight seconds later, tipping a shot from Matty Beniers past Korpisalo.

Boston Bruins (NHL)

Though the Bruins killed off the second part of Pastrnak’s penalty, Seattle got another chance when Tyler Johnson tripped Will Borgen at 3:10. After that penalty ended, Schwartz won a puck battle in the corner, skated to the net, and scored with a backhand shot over Korpisalo’s shoulder.

The Bruins got on the scoreboard midway through the second period. After a scramble in front of the net, Seattle’s Brandon Montour prevented the puck from crossing the goal line by catching it in the crease. Marchand took advantage of a fake shot to score a backhand goal past Grubauer.

The Kraken extended their lead with three goals in the third period. Dunn scored by batting a puck out of the air at 3:07, Bjorkstrand scored again at 9:16 with a shot that hit the right post, and McCann added an empty-net goal at 18:06.

Bruins center Elias Lindholm didn’t return in the third period due to an upper-body injury.

Bruins look to bounce back as they face Kraken after tough defeat

The Boston Bruins have seen some improvement under new coach Joe Sacco, but they still struggle with big losses.

The Bruins are 15-12-3 for the season, and 7-3-0 since Sacco took over for Jim Montgomery on Nov. 19. However, they have a minus-19 goal differential, which is tied for the fifth-worst in the NHL, following a tough 8-1 loss to Winnipeg on Tuesday.

Boston will aim to avoid another heavy loss when they play the Seattle Kraken on Thursday.

Despite a four-game winning streak, Bruins captain Brad Marchand had a bad feeling as the team started their five-game road trip in Winnipeg.

“This was coming,” Marchand said. “Our practices have been sloppy, our execution has been off there, and it bleeds into games. The way you practice is how you play, it starts there and we haven’t been good enough. So, we need to do a better job at being good in practice and that will translate to games.”

“(The Jets) were very good. They were good and we were not good. We weren’t executing. We were lost in our coverage and we were lost in our battles. So yeah, they were good, they made plays, but we did not have a good game.”

This loss was the Bruins’ seventh of the season by three or more goals, and their first under Sacco.

David Pastrnak scored midway through the second period to make it 3-1, but the Jets pulled away with five goals in the third period. Pastrnak leads the team with 28 points and 10 goals, one behind Marchand.

Seattle Kraken (NHL)

“It’s 3-1 after two periods. We’ve been in that position before,” Sacco said. “We thought that we could certainly work our way back into the game but we didn’t. … But there’s things that we need to address and correct, and we will.”

Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman stopped just 27 of 35 shots.

“Some of the goals that I let in I just know I can stop,” Swayman said. “I hold myself to a standard, and when you let those in, it’s not a great feeling so I want to make sure that doesn’t happen again. … We didn’t use the momentum that we built (winning four straight). We’ve got four more games this road trip. We’re going to take one game at a time and I’m excited for that.”

The Kraken returned home on Tuesday after a 3-1-0 road trip to Carolina and the New York area, facing the Islanders, Devils, and Rangers. Seattle had to settle for a 2-1 shootout loss to the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, despite creating chances in overtime.

Chandler Stephenson scored the only goal for the Kraken on a breakaway in the first period, and goalie Joey Daccord made 32 saves. Jared McCann had the secondary assist on the goal, marking his 100th assist for the Kraken since being selected in the 2021 NHL expansion draft.

McCann is day-to-day with an injury after missing practice on Wednesday.

“We’ll take the point,” Stephenson said. “Obviously, it would have been nice (to win), but at the same time, we still did some good things. But I think we’ll just look to be better next game. … Joey played outstanding for us, gave us a chance, and we just couldn’t buy one in overtime.”

Mark Scheifele equals team record as Jets fly past Bruins

Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor each recorded three points to lead the Winnipeg Jets to an 8-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night.

Scheifele, who scored two goals and added an assist, found the net in both the first and second periods, marking his 46th career multi-goal game, tying Ilya Kovalchuk for the most in team history. The Jets built a 3-0 lead before exploding for five goals in the third period, including three goals in just 7:19 and two more in a span of 10 seconds.

Connor had two assists and also scored during the third-period surge, while Gabriel Vilardi and Nikita Chibrikov each contributed a goal and an assist.

Alex Iafallo, Vladislav Namestnikov, and Mason Appleton also scored for the Jets. Neal Pionk recorded two assists, and Winnipeg went 3-for-6 on the power play to secure their third win in four games.

Connor Hellebuyck made 23 saves to earn his league-leading 18th win, including eight saves in the first period.

David Pastrnak scored for the Bruins, and Jeremy Swayman made 27 saves in the loss. Boston had won four straight games before starting their current five-game road trip.

Boston Bruins (NHL)

The Jets took the lead at 12:09 of the first period on a four-minute power play. Pionk’s shot went wide, but the puck bounced off the wall, hit Nino Niederreiter, and went across the crease where Namestnikov was able to tap it in.

They doubled their lead late in the first period after a turnover allowed Scheifele to race to the slot and score off a pass from Connor with 1:59 left.

After Hellebuyck stopped a wrist shot from Nikita Zadorov, the Jets quickly made it 3-0. Josh Morrissey passed to Scheifele for a one-timer during a brief power play at 7:02.

Pastrnak responded with a power-play goal at 9:13 of the second, bringing the Bruins within 3-1. Charlie McAvoy assisted with a pass into the left circle, where Pastrnak beat Hellebuyck.

In the third, Connor scored just 1:15 in, capitalizing on a failed clearing attempt and netting a goal from Scheifele’s pass. Connor then assisted Vilardi, who scored on a wrist shot at 5:33 to make it 5-1.

Iafallo added another power-play goal at 7:19, tipping in a shot from Pionk.

The final two goals came late in the game, with Appleton scoring at 16:16 from an impossible angle and Chibrikov marking his NHL debut with a turnaround shot from the left faceoff circle.

Bruins aim to prove their strength as they begin road trip against Jets

The Boston Bruins, winners of four straight and seven of their last nine games since Joe Sacco became interim head coach, are heading out on their longest road trip of the season.

Their five-game road trip starts on Tuesday with a tough matchup against the Winnipeg Jets, who are currently tied for first place in the Western Conference and are the only team in the NHL with 20 wins.

“We’ll get out there and enjoy each other’s company on the road,” said Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy. “Sometimes these trips are a good opportunity for us to have some experiences together.”

The Bruins have been on a strong run since their 5-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Dec. 1, but traveling presents a new challenge after winning three of their last four games at home.

“I think it tells a lot about your team when you get on the road, about the identity of the group and how you respond in different environments,” said Sacco. “We’re going to face, obviously, one of the better teams in the league in our next game. I think it’s important that we remain true to our identity, and that’s what has given us success lately.”

In their last game on Saturday, the Bruins overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3, with David Pastrnak assisting Pavel Zacha for the overtime-winning goal for the second time in three games.

Pastrnak missed practice on Monday due to an upper-body injury, but the team expects it to be minor and is hopeful that he will be able to play on Tuesday. The team also is not carrying any extra players.

Winnipeg Jets (NHL)

The team’s recent success has boosted confidence in the locker room.

“I think we’re believing that we can win those (close) games, even if you don’t have great starts,” said Zacha. “That’s something that we’re going to build on as a part of Bruins hockey: being the hard team to play against and winning these games.”

The Jets, who started the season 17-3-0, have cooled off with a 3-6-0 record in their last nine games. They had a two-game win streak snapped with a 4-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday.

Kyle Connor scored his 15th goal of the season to give Winnipeg the lead in the second period, but the Blue Jackets answered with two goals in a span of 2:27 in the third period to secure the win.

“We’re tied going into the third kind of like we’ve been the last few games, when we found ways to win hockey games,” said Jets coach Scott Arniel. “This one, we made mistakes and it ended up in the back of our net.”

Connor, who has scored twice in his last three games after a six-game scoreless streak, leads a deep Jets lineup that includes four other players with double-digit goals: Gabriel Vilardi (11), Nino Niederreiter (10), and Mark Scheifele (14).

“Obviously, it’s great to contribute and get some goals, but in the end, nothing is more fun than winning hockey games,” said Niederreiter after the Jets’ 4-2 victory in Chicago.

Tuesday’s game will be the second of a four-game homestand for the Jets, who recently completed a stretch of three games in four days against Columbus.

“We’ve talked about it as a group, we’re not looking for excuses based on the schedule,” said Arniel. “This is hockey.”

Pavel Zacha nets another overtime goal to lead the Bruins past the Flyers

Pavel Zacha scored his second overtime game-winning goal in three games to help the Boston Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

After Boston goalie Jeremy Swayman (23 saves) stopped a breakaway from Joel Farabee in overtime, David Pastrnak skated around the net and passed the puck to Zacha, who scored the game-winning goal at 2:49.

Trent Frederic had two goals for Boston, including his second multi-goal game of the season, and Brad Marchand scored the game-tying goal, extending the Bruins’ winning streak to four games.

Matvei Michkov gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead in the first period, becoming the first NHL rookie to score 10 goals this season.

Cam York also scored for Philadelphia, while Travis Sanheim had two assists and Aleksei Kolosov made 27 saves. The Flyers have lost two straight games (0-1-1) after a 4-0-1 stretch.

Marchand tied the game with 5:22 left in regulation, beating Kolosov with a shot through the legs after receiving a pass from Justin Brazeau.

Boston Bruins (NHL)

The game went to overtime despite the Bruins having three power plays in the third period. Frederic had scored his second goal at 5:18, deflecting a shot from Charlie Coyle.

Boston had 31 shots to Philadelphia’s 26.

Michkov scored two of Philadelphia’s first six shots. He opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 7:24 of the first period. After Emil Andrae’s shot was blocked, Sean Couturier passed the puck to Michkov, who scored from the right circle.

The Flyers made it 2-0 when Sanheim passed the puck to Michkov, who skated to the crease and scored on an open side of Swayman’s net.

After Kolosov made a sliding save on Morgan Geekie, Frederic got the Bruins on the board with a rebound goal at 5:26 of the second period, assisted by Mason Lohrei.

York gave the Flyers a 3-1 lead with 4:31 left in the second period, taking a pass from Sanheim and scoring with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle.

Brad Marchand and Morgan Geekie lead Bruins to a 4-2 win over the Blackhawks

Brad Marchand scored two goals in the second period just 2:05 apart, and Morgan Geekie also netted two goals, while Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves to help the Boston Bruins beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 on Wednesday.

Boston won its sixth game in the last eight, extending its season-best winning streak to three games under interim coach Joe Sacco after coming back from an early deficit.

Marchand had his second multi-goal game of the season, while Geekie recorded his first. Justin Brazeau, Mason Lohrei, Jordan Oesterle, and David Pastrnak each had two assists.

Marchand’s first goal came at 2:58 of the second period when he was left alone to receive a backdoor pass from Pastrnak, scoring from the right circle.

Marchand scored again shortly after, picking up a rebound of a shot from Pastrnak and backhanding it past Blackhawks goalie Petr Mrazek to give the Bruins a 3-1 lead.

Chicago took a 1-0 lead just 1:23 into the game when Alex Vlasic scored his first goal of the season off a wrist shot from the right circle following a pass from Nick Foligno.

Columbus Blue Jackets and Chicago Blackhawks

However, the Blackhawks couldn’t hold on to the lead, as they lost their fourth straight game, matching their worst losing streak of the season.

Boston tied the game at 12:17 of the first period when Geekie followed up his own shot, putting in the rebound after Mrazek couldn’t control the puck.

The Blackhawks got back within 3-2 late in the second period when Jason Dickinson scored on a wrist shot from the left circle, assisted by Connor Murphy.

Chicago had a chance to tie the game early in the third period, with two shots on goal, a blocked shot, and a missed shot over a 19-second stretch. However, Boston restored its two-goal lead at 5:02 of the third when Geekie scored on a breakaway from a long pass by Brazeau.

With 1:55 left, the Blackhawks were called for too many men on the ice after putting an extra attacker on too quickly.

Mrazek stopped 23 shots for Chicago.

Pavel Zacha scored the game-winning goal in overtime, leading the Boston Bruins to a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings

Pavel Zacha scored the game-winning goal at 2:15 of overtime, taking a pass from David Pastrnak to give the Boston Bruins a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.

After Detroit’s Dylan Larkin hit the post on a breakaway early in overtime, Pastrnak set up a give-and-go play with Zacha between the circles. Zacha then took a wrist shot from the right dot to win the game.

Nikita Zadorov and Justin Brazeau also scored for Boston, which has now won two consecutive games. Brazeau’s power-play goal tied the game with 10:28 remaining in regulation.

Joonas Korpisalo made 25 saves for the Bruins, including 12 in the second period. He didn’t face any shots on goal in overtime.

Lucas Raymond scored both of Detroit’s goals, extending his point streak to eight games. His first goal was his 200th career NHL point, making him one of only five Swedish players to reach that milestone at his age or younger.

Simon Edvinsson and Michael Rasmussen each provided an assist. Edvinsson also assisted on Raymond’s second goal.

Detroit Red Wings (NHL)

Ville Husso stopped 32 shots for Detroit, which is now 0-1-2 in its last three games after winning two in a row.

Boston led 35-27 in shots on goal and 38-12 in hits, with both teams scoring a power-play goal.

Detroit opened the scoring at 7:31 of the first period when Edvinsson’s backhand pass deflected off Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy’s skate to Raymond, who scored with a wrist shot from the right circle.

Zadorov tied the game less than two minutes later, blasting a shot from the top of the circles after taking a pass from Brad Marchand.

Detroit looked to regain the lead with a power-play goal at 12:41 of the second period, but Marco Kasper’s redirection past Korpisalo was ruled offside after Boston successfully challenged the play.

Raymond put the Red Wings back in front at 1:19 of the third period with a wrist shot from the center of the ice after a pass from Rasmussen.

Brazeau’s tying goal came only four seconds into a power play when he tipped in a shot from Mason Lohrei while positioned in front of Husso.

Bruins celebrate their 100th anniversary with a win against the Canadiens

Charlie McAvoy and Charlie Coyle each scored twice as the Boston Bruins marked their 100th anniversary with a 6-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday afternoon.

McAvoy’s goals came at the start and end of Boston’s 4-0 run to begin the game, which included three goals in just 1:10 during the later part of the first period. This was McAvoy’s third career two-goal game.

Cole Koepke had a goal and an assist, and David Pastrnak also scored in his 700th career game for the Bruins, who improved to 4-2-0 under interim coach Joe Sacco with their second win over Montreal this season.

Jeremy Swayman played well in goal, making 26 saves in the win.

Cole Caufield scored twice for Montreal, Emil Heineman added one goal, and Nick Suzuki had two assists as the Canadiens reduced their 5-1 deficit to 5-3 in the third period.

Cayden Primeau made 24 saves for Montreal, which lost for the second day in a row.

McAvoy got Boston on the board at 11:45 of the first period by picking up a pass from Jordan Oesterle, driving down the right wing, and scoring on a wraparound shot past Primeau’s stick side.

Boston increased its lead to 2-0 at 12:40 after Primeau stopped Pavel Zacha’s close-range shot. Zacha quickly passed the puck to Pastrnak, who scored with a wrist shot from the right circle.

Montreal Canadiens celebrates a goal

Fifteen seconds later, Coyle gave the Bruins a 3-0 advantage when he pulled back the rebound of Mark Kastelic’s shot and scored with a backhander.

The Bruins added another goal just 38 seconds into the second period. After Nikita Zadorov received a delay of game penalty, McAvoy broke away for a short-handed goal, beating Primeau to his right.

Montreal broke the shutout at 5:42 of the second period when Arber Xhekaj skated the blue line, cut to the right wing, and took a backhand shot that deflected off Caufield and past Swayman.

Coyle added another goal just 21 seconds into the third period, taking a pass from Koepke and scoring his second of the game.

Heineman got Montreal’s late rally started at 2:28, scoring from the top of the right circle on a pass from Jake Evans.

Caufield then brought Montreal within 5-3 at 6:38 with a wrist shot from the left circle off a pass from Suzuki.

Koepke sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 2:14 left.

The game was played exactly 100 years after the Bruins’ first-ever NHL game, a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Maroons on Dec. 1, 1924, at Boston Arena. Pre-game ceremonies included several alumni representing different eras in the team’s history.

Kevin Lankinen shines in net as Canucks defeat Bruins

Kevin Lankinen earned a shutout with 33 saves as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Boston Bruins 2-0 on Tuesday. Lankinen made 13 saves in the second period and 11 more in the third to secure his second shutout of the season. The Canucks’ defense also helped by blocking 26 shots.

Jake DeBrusk, playing against his former team, scored the game-winning goal in the second period, marking his third goal in two games. This win gave Vancouver back-to-back victories and extended their road winning streak to eight games. Conor Garland added an empty-net goal with 12.5 seconds left, finishing with a goal and an assist.

For the Bruins, Jeremy Swayman made 13 saves on 14 shots, but the team couldn’t extend its win streak to three games. They also lost for the first time under interim coach Joe Sacco. Despite outshooting Vancouver 32-15, Boston went 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Canucks scored once on two power-play opportunities.

Boston Bruins players watching the game from the sidelines

DeBrusk’s power-play goal at 5:53 of the second period gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead. Quinn Hughes took a shot from the high slot that deflected off Conor Garland, landing right to DeBrusk in front of the net, where he scored on the rebound.

Lankinen made key saves in the third period, including a crucial stop on Trent Frederic, who was set up by Marc McLaughlin for a redirect. He also denied Pavel Zacha on a point-blank shot during Boston’s power play.

Boston had a 9-3 advantage in shots after the first period, with David Pastrnak getting the first shot of the game for either team. Lankinen was tested early in the second, including stopping a semi-breakaway from Pastrnak after a stretch pass from Zacha just 1:08 into the period.
