Cristiano Ronaldo gears up for Asian Champions League match in Riyadh ahead of milestone birthday

Cristiano Ronaldo will turn 40 on Wednesday, but he is still showing great form as he gets ready to lead Saudi club Al-Nassr against Al-Wasl in the Asian Football Confederation’s Champions League Elite.

The Portuguese forward, who joined Al-Nassr in December 2022, is currently the top scorer in the Saudi Pro League with 15 goals in 17 games.

If Ronaldo can keep up his good performance in the continental tournament, with two group stage games left and his team already qualified, Al-Nassr could have a chance to win the Asian title for the first time.

“The best birthday gift for Ronaldo is to achieve victory against Al-Wasl,” said Al-Nassr coach Stefano Pioli before the match on Monday. “It is an important match for us and we want the three points.”

Ronaldo, who has won the UEFA Champions League five times with Manchester United and Real Madrid, now has a better chance of winning his first Asian title with Al-Nassr’s recent signing of Jhon Duran from Aston Villa in the English Premier League for around $79 million.

Reports in Saudi Arabia say Duran has already been registered in time to play against Al-Wasl from the United Arab Emirates.

“Duran is in good shape,” Pioli said. “We will decide how best to use him.”

The team will miss former Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte, who is absent for personal reasons, as well as defender Ali Lajami and midfielder Otavio, who are both dealing with injuries.

Cristiano Ronaldo reacts after missing a shot

Al-Nassr is currently in third place in its 12-team group, behind Saudi rivals Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli, both of which are unbeaten after six games.

Al-Hilal has won four continental titles, more than any other club in Asia. However, they will be without Neymar for their match against Persepolis of Iran. Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, returned to South America after an injury-filled period where he only played seven times in 18 months for Al-Hilal.

“We are looking forward to the game,” said coach Jorge Jesus. “Our ambitions are always to win at home and in Asia.”

Al-Ahli, which includes former Premier League stars like Riyad Mahrez and Ivan Toney, has the offensive strength to win the Champions League for the first time. The Jeddah-based team is currently in second place and will face Al-Sadd in Qatar.

All 12 teams in the western zone of the tournament are still in the running to finish in the top eight and move on to the knockout stage.

The eastern zone will resume next week.

Messi Set to Compete in Historic Riyadh Season Cup Match with Inter Miami in January 2024

Lionel Messi has announced that he will face off against his long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, in what could be their final showdown on January 29, 2024, as part of the Riyadh Season Cup in Saudi Arabia. Messi made the announcement on Instagram, confirming that his team, Inter Miami, will participate in this prestigious event. The Argentine football legend expressed his excitement, stating that he was looking forward to representing his team in the historic championship. This event, which runs from January 29 to February 2, will see top Saudi clubs compete in various sports, with soccer being a key highlight.

The Riyadh Season Cup is part of a broader event called the Riyadh Season, which was launched in 2019 and includes a variety of sports, including soccer and boxing. Tyson Fury’s crossover boxing match against Francis Ngannou was one of the season’s major events in October. The Riyadh Season Cup provides a platform for top football clubs from around the region to showcase their talent, and this year’s edition will be notable due to the participation of two of the sport’s greatest players, Messi and Ronaldo.

Lionel Messi

Messi and Ronaldo’s meeting in Saudi Arabia will be significant, as it could be the final time their fans witness these two legends play against each other. Both players have had illustrious careers, with Messi winning a record eight Ballon d’Or awards, while Ronaldo has built his legacy as one of the most decorated players in history. This particular match will be a part of the larger Riyadh Season Cup, where Inter Miami, Messi’s current club, and Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr are both involved. This match has been dubbed their “Last Dance,” evoking memories of their intense rivalry in La Liga when Messi played for FC Barcelona and Ronaldo for Real Madrid.

Although fans are excited about this potential final clash, both Messi and Ronaldo’s former teams, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, will not be directly involved in the Riyadh Season Cup. These teams could meet in the final of the Spanish Super Cup if they manage to defeat Atletico Madrid and Osasuna in the semifinals. However, despite not participating in this specific event, Messi and Ronaldo’s presence in Saudi Arabia will undoubtedly be the highlight for many football enthusiasts, who have followed their rivalry closely over the years.

The matchup in Saudi Arabia might have been a more frequent occurrence if Messi had accepted an offer from Al-Hilal, a Saudi club when he was nearing free agency after his time at Paris Saint-Germain. Instead, Messi chose to reject the substantial offer and join Inter Miami, a decision that led to this rare opportunity for fans to see him face off against Ronaldo in Riyadh. This could very well be the last time the two football icons share the pitch, marking a historic moment for the sport and its generations of fans.

Cristiano Ronaldo Makes History as First Men’s Player to Score 900 Official Goals

Cristiano Ronaldo made history by becoming the first men’s player to score 900 goals in official matches during Portugal’s UEFA Nations League match against Croatia in Lisbon. The milestone goal came in the 34th minute when Ronaldo scored with a volley from Nuno Mendes’ cross, helping Portugal secure a 2-1 victory. Reflecting on his achievement, Ronaldo expressed immense pride, acknowledging the hard work and dedication required to reach such a unique milestone in his career. His emotional celebration—kneeling with his hands to his face—underscored the significance of this moment.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner continues to lead the all-time scoring charts, with 58 more goals than his closest rival, Lionel Messi, who has 842 goals. Brazilian legend Pelé ranks third with 765 goals. Ronaldo also achieved another historic first by breaking the 800-goal barrier in 2021 during his second stint with Manchester United. Additionally, he holds the record for the most international goals in men’s football, with 131 goals in 209 appearances, placing him ahead of Messi and Iran’s Ali Daei, both with 109 goals.

Ronaldo’s club career is equally impressive, having scored 769 club goals across stints with Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and his current club, Al Nassr. Despite being 39 years old, Ronaldo remains determined to extend his remarkable scoring legacy. He recently set his sights on a new target: 1,000 career goals, a milestone he believes he can achieve by the age of 41 if he remains injury-free. This ambitious goal reflects his enduring competitive spirit and commitment to excellence.

Ronaldo emphasized the distinction of his achievements, highlighting that all his goals are documented in video, a testament to the transparency and accountability of his era. He acknowledged the contributions of legends like Pelé and Alfredo Di Stéfano, who played in times when such records were harder to verify, but he also asserted the credibility of his own numbers. Ever confident, he joked about adding goals from training sessions to his tally if needed to prove his greatness.

The milestone underscores Ronaldo’s relentless pursuit of success and his status as one of football’s all-time greats. Whether for club or country, his career has been defined by consistency, discipline, and an insatiable drive to achieve more. As he continues to set new benchmarks, Ronaldo’s legacy remains a testament to his extraordinary talent and dedication to the sport.

Messi and Ronaldo left off FIFPRO’s Men’s World XI, while Bronze ties record for Women’s Team

Neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo made the men’s world team of the year chosen by the global players’ union FIFPRO on Monday.

Messi, 37, who plays for MLS team Inter Miami, and Ronaldo, 39, who plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, were the only players not from European clubs to be included in the 26-man shortlist voted on by FIFPRO last week.

This year’s team includes six players from Real Madrid, which holds the record with 15 Champions League titles, and four players from Manchester City, a top Premier League team. Virgil van Dijk from Liverpool was the other player selected.

The World XI was voted on by professional players from 70 countries.

In goal is Ederson from Manchester City, with Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal and Antonio Rüdiger partnering Van Dijk in defense.

The midfield features Jude Bellingham and Toni Kroos from Madrid, along with Kevin De Bruyne and Ballon d’Or winner Rodri from City.

Erling Haaland from City is joined by Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Jr. from Madrid in a strong attack.

This is the first time since 2006 that Messi has not been chosen. He holds the record for most selections with 17. Ronaldo, who has been selected 15 times, last appeared in the team in 2021.

Cristiano Ronaldo reacts after missing a shot

Since 2005, FIFPRO has invited professional football players worldwide to vote for the men’s team and since 2015 for the women’s team. This is the only global football award decided solely by the players.

A record 7,000 women’s players voted.

Chelsea defender Lucy Bronze, formerly with Barcelona, was selected for the seventh time, tying the record held by Wendie Renard, a defender for Lyon and France.

Aitana Bonmatí, a two-time women’s Ballon d’Or winner, made the team after helping Barcelona win the Spanish league, cup, and the Champions League.

Brazilian veteran Marta, 38, made her return for the first time since 2021, while 24-year-old Barbra Banda of Zambia (Shanghai Shengli and Orlando Pride) became the first African woman to make the team.

Mary Earps from England, who plays for Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, was chosen as goalkeeper. Olga Carmona from Real Madrid and Spain and Alex Greenwood from Manchester City and England were also named to the defense.

Alexia Putellas joined Bonmatí in the Barcelona midfield, along with England’s Keira Walsh.

The attack features Linda Caicedo from Colombia (Real Madrid) and Lauren James from England (Chelsea).

An Al-Hilal attacker reflects on mimicking Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic celebration following a victory over Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.

Al-Hilal attacker Michael Delgado humbly dismissed any comparisons to Lionel Messi, emphasizing the Argentine superstar’s unparalleled talent. Following Al-Hilal’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Messi’s Inter Miami team in the Riyadh Season Cup, Delgado expressed his admiration for Messi during a press conference:

“I thank all those involved in the Riyadh Season Cup, which allowed us to face the best player in the world, Lionel Messi. I am not worth anything in front of Messi, so I should not be compared to him. I am a big admirer of Messi and I love him very much.”

The Riyadh Season Cup, a pre-season tournament held in the Middle East, features teams such as Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal, and Inter Miami, commenced on Jan. 29 and concludes on Feb 8.

In the thrilling encounter against Inter Miami, Al-Hilal showcased their prowess by securing a hard-fought 4-3 victory. Despite holding leads at 2-0 and 3-1, they faced a resilient comeback from their opponents, but ultimately secured the win with an 89th-minute goal from Brazilian winger Malcom.

“Ready to outshine Messi once again,” “No injury excuses this time” – Fans share reactions to Cristiano Ronaldo’s training photo ahead of Inter Miami clash.

Fans have expressed their excitement over Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to training ahead of Al-Nassr’s anticipated match against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in Riyadh on Thursday (February 1).

Ronaldo, who recently turned 38, had been grappling with a fitness concern that led to the cancellation of Al-Alami’s two friendly matches in China last week. However, with the Portuguese captain back on the training ground after nearly a fortnight, he’s poised to participate in the clash against his long-standing rival Messi’s Miami team, currently in Saudi Arabia for the 2024 Riyadh Season Cup.

Tata Martino’s squad suffered a 4-3 defeat to Saudi Pro League leaders Al-Hilal on Monday (January 29), with both Messi and newly acquired Luis Suarez finding the net for the visitors. Despite their efforts, the former Barcelona pair couldn’t prevent the Herons from succumbing to their second consecutive pre-season loss, having previously fallen 1-0 to FC Dallas a few days earlier.

Their upcoming encounter presents another formidable challenge as they prepare to face Al-Nassr, who trail only Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League standings. Fans are eagerly anticipating a potential showdown between Ronaldo and Messi, with one fan expressing:

“He came back in time to destroy Messi”

Another fan added:

“He wasn’t injured”

Cristiano Ronaldo last crossed paths with Inter Miami’s captain Lionel Messi during matchday six of the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League on December 8.

Back then, Ronaldo, playing for Juventus, delivered a stellar performance with a brace, propelling the Bianconeri to a 3-0 victory. The match took place in an empty Camp Nou due to the COVID-19 lockdown, with Weston McKennie adding to the scoreline with a goal in the 20th minute.

Ronaldo opened the scoring within 13 minutes and later secured his brace seven minutes into the second half, both goals coming from penalty kicks. This marked Ronaldo’s first UEFA Champions League goal at Camp Nou after a drought of four games.

Both Juventus and Barcelona concluded the group stage with 15 points each, but Juventus edged ahead of Barcelona, securing qualification for the Round of 16. However, both Messi and Ronaldo’s teams faced defeats in that round. Barcelona succumbed to a 5-2 aggregate loss to PSG, while Juventus was eliminated by Porto on away goals following a 4-4 aggregate draw.

Liverpool holds a keen interest in an attacker who turned down a €40 million contract proposal from Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr.

Liverpool is reportedly keeping a close eye on Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo, who recently turned down a lucrative offer from Al-Nassr to continue his journey with the La Liga outfit.

According to reports from Spanish outlet Relevo, Jürgen Klopp’s side holds a “special interest” in Kubo, who has been impressing with his performances at Reale Arena. The 22-year-old Japanese winger has tallied six goals and four assists in 25 appearances across various competitions this season.

Despite the tempting offer from Al-Nassr, Kubo seems committed to his current project with Real Sociedad. However, Liverpool views him as a potential target for the future, given his talent and potential. Kubo still has three years remaining on his contract with Sociedad.

Notably, the former Real Madrid youngster also attracted attention from Saudi Pro League powerhouse Al-Nassr, led by Cristiano Ronaldo. Reports suggest that Kubo turned down a staggering €40 million contract offer from Al-Nassr, despite their willingness to activate his €60 million release clause.

Liverpool, if they decide to pursue Kubo, would likely need to match this release clause to secure his services at Anfield. Despite their current attacking options, which include the likes of Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Núñez, and Luis Diaz, Klopp’s side is keeping tabs on potential reinforcements.

Salah’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain amid reported interest from Saudi Pro League clubs Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad, with the Egyptian star having just a year left on his current contract.

Liverpool’s Diogo Jota finds inspiration in Cristiano Ronaldo’s remarkable career

Jota has emerged as a key player for Liverpool in the absence of Salah, who is currently away at the African Cup of Nations. The Portuguese forward has been in sensational form, stepping up when his team needed him the most.

In 23 appearances across all competitions, the 27-year-old has notched an impressive tally of 11 goals and provided four assists. His standout performance came in Liverpool’s 4-0 victory over Bournemouth, where he netted a brace and set up another goal.

Reflecting on his goalscoring exploits, Jota drew inspiration from Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, emphasizing Ronaldo’s remarkable goal-scoring prowess even in his thirties.

Jota expressed, “You have a lot of energy when you are young, but you still make a lot of mistakes, and you always learn with experience. I always look up to [Cristiano] Ronaldo, for example, and I think he scored more goals since he has been over 30 than before he was 30, so that shows as well it’s doable.”

Ronaldo, now 38, holds the record for the most goals scored in club and international football history. With an astounding 739 goals in 993 club games and 128 goals in 205 international appearances, he continues to set the standard for goal-scoring excellence.

As the captain of Al-Nassr, Ronaldo ended 2023 as the top scorer in club football worldwide, notching an impressive 54 goals. His dominance in the Saudi Pro League remains unparalleled, reaffirming his status as one of the most prolific goalscorers in the game.

Reports suggest that Cristiano Ronaldo is advocating for Al Nassr to secure the signature of a former teammate to strengthen their midfield.

Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly suggested former teammate Isco as a potential addition to Al-Nassr’s squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Isco and Ronaldo shared the field 188 times during their tenure at Real Madrid, combining for 25 goals. Although Isco left Los Blancos in 2022, his recent stint at Real Betis has showcased his talent, with six goals and five assists in 27 games across competitions this season.

Impressively, Isco has secured 13 Player of the Match awards in 20 La Liga appearances this season, highlighting his impact on the pitch. His standout performances have caught the attention of Al-Nassr, who are reportedly interested in acquiring his services, as per Todofichajes.

While a January move seems unlikely, Isco could potentially leave Real Betis in the summer, with a €10 million release clause in his contract offering a route for his departure.

Moreover, Al-Nassr’s ambitions extend beyond Isco, with reports suggesting interest in Cristiano Ronaldo’s former teammates Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Casemiro. Wan-Bissaka, currently at Manchester United, has appeared 21 times alongside Ronaldo during their tenure at the club.

Additionally, Al-Nassr is reportedly eyeing Casemiro, who joined Manchester United from Real Madrid in 2022. Despite his £375,000 per week wages, the Saudi Arabian side is keen on offering the Brazilian midfielder a lucrative contract.

Rio Ferdinand asserts that Manchester United signed Cristiano Ronaldo due to the disappointment of missing out on Ronaldinho, leaving the manager utterly devastated.

Manchester United’s decision to sign Cristiano Ronaldo was influenced by their failed pursuit of Brazilian legend Ronaldinho, according to former Red Devils defender Rio Ferdinand. He revealed that Ronaldo wasn’t initially the club’s priority target, with Ronaldinho being their primary focus.

” I remember when Cristiano Ronaldo signed we went on tour to Lisbon and he was lucky that we signed him. It was only on the disappointment of not signing Ronaldinho that summer,” Ferdinand disclosed on The Obi One podcast.

United had aggressively pursued Ronaldinho after his stellar performances at Paris Saint-Germain, but a last-minute twist saw him choose Barcelona over Old Trafford. This turn of events prompted the Red Devils to shift their attention to Ronaldo, ultimately securing his transfer from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 for €19 million.

Ferdinand elaborated on how close United was to signing Ronaldinho before he had a change of heart: “He was away on pre-season and we were as close as announcing him and giving him a number but I think he ended up changing his mind at the last minute and signing for Barcelona. It’s strange really because we played Barcelona on that pre-season tour.”

Despite missing out on Ronaldinho, Ronaldo’s arrival proved to be a resounding success for Manchester United, as he went on to achieve greatness at the club and beyond.

Meanwhile, United are reportedly eyeing KRC Genk midfielder Bilal El Khannouss, with a potential £26 million move in the works. The 19-year-old Belgian has impressed with his performances, and United are keen to secure his signature before the transfer window closes in four days.

Scott McTominay Selects Skills from Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Kylian Mbappe to Create His Ultimate Player

Soccer has produced some of the best talents through the decades. Only a few have left an indelible mark with their unique set of skills and abilities. Imagine a player who has the qualities of all the finest stars of ‘the beautiful game.’ Well, Scott McTominay unveiled his vision for the ultimate player—a composite of unparalleled skills exhibited by soccer’s luminaries. The idea came when Manchester United‘s lanky midfielder sat down for a special interview.

GOAL asked Scott McTominay to build his ideal player based on several skill sets. Starting with the pair of legs, he chooses both of the undisputable GOATS of the game: Lionel Messi for the left foot and Cristiano Ronaldo for the right one. In the category of speed, Frenchman Kylian Mbappe was called for. For strength, he took the name of his former Red Devils teammate and Belgian striker, Romelu Lukaku.

In the skills category, Barcelona icon and currently injured at Al Hilal, Neymar made the cut. In terms of overall soccer IQ, Scott McTominay took the name of Italy legend Andrea Pirlo. Indeed, this is ‘the ultimate player’ one can have in soccer. Not to forget, the Scottish midfielder has massively stepped up his own game this season.

If a player is ever born with all such skills, that talent will undoubtedly dominate the soccer world and be unstoppable in breaking all the records set in history. Perhaps Scott McTominay adores all the aforementioned names. This justifies his zeal to play attacking soccer unhesitantly.

Scott McTominay insists on doing ‘much, much better’ in attack

Scott McTominay believes he can contribute more to Manchester United’s goal tally despite already leading as the top scorer in the Premier League this season. Already having the role of defensive midfielder, the 27-year-old insisted on providing more on the attacking front. “You have to take your moments. Thankfully, I’ve been able to do that in certain games, but I still can do much, much better,” he asserted on the club’s website.

Notably, Scott McTominay shares the top spot with Rasmus Hojlund and Bruno Fernandes, having netted six goals, primarily in top-flight matches. While he secured a double against Chelsea at Old Trafford, the midfielder aims to capitalize further on opportunities provided by his teammates and enhance his goal-scoring impact.

Why Cristiano Ronaldo Left Manchester United? Everything You Need To Know

The world of football was left in shock when the news broke that Cristiano Ronaldo had decided to leave Manchester United after six successful years. The Portuguese international had become one of the most cherished players in the history of the club and had won numerous trophies during his time with the Red Devils.

In the summer of 2009, Ronaldo decided to leave Manchester United and join Spanish giants Real Madrid in a world-record transfer deal. But why did the Portuguese star decide to move away from the club he had been so successful with?

The main reason why Ronaldo decided to leave Manchester United was that he felt that he had outgrown the club. During his time with the Red Devils, Ronaldo became one of the best players in the world and won numerous trophies. He had also become one of the highest-paid players in the world and was looking for a club that could provide him with financial rewards that would match his achievements on the pitch.

At the same time, Ronaldo also wanted to test himself at the highest level. He had achieved all he could at Manchester United and was looking for a new challenge and a way to prove himself against the best players in the world. Real Madrid offered him the opportunity to do this, and he decided to take it.

The other factor that influenced Ronaldo’s decision to leave Manchester United was the lack of ambition at the club. When Ronaldo signed for the Red Devils in 2003, the club was at the peak of its powers and was winning trophies regularly. However, as the years passed, the club failed to maintain its success and was unable to compete with the best teams in Europe.

This led to Ronaldo growing increasingly frustrated, and he felt that he was not being given the opportunity to show his true potential. He had become one of the best players in the world and wanted to be part of a team that could compete for the top prizes in Europe.

The final factor that influenced Ronaldo’s decision to leave Manchester United was his desire to play regularly in the Champions League. The Red Devils had failed to qualify for the competition in the 2008-2009 season, and this was another reason why Ronaldo decided to move on. He wanted to be part of a team that could challenge for the top prizes in Europe, and Real Madrid offered him this opportunity.

Overall, there were several factors that led to Ronaldo leaving Manchester United. He had outgrown the club, he wanted to be part of a team that could compete for the top prizes in Europe, and he desired to be part of a team that could regularly compete in the Champions League. All of these aspects combined to make Real Madrid a more attractive proposition for Ronaldo, and he decided to take the plunge and move to the Spanish capital.
