Nuggets Pull A 17-Point Win Over Pelicans As Jamal Murray Hits At Crucial Time

Every Nuggets comeback needs a spark, and this one notably came without Nikola Jokic on the court. With 9:18 left in a game Denver trailed 100-90, Julian Strawther was knocked over away from the ball while Jamal Murray hit a corner 3-pointer.

The result: a flagrant foul, a free throw for Strawther, and a lob from Russell Westbrook to DeAndre Jordan, adding up to a six-point possession. Eventually, this led to an improbable and hard-fought 132-129 overtime victory over the Pelicans on Sunday night.

The Nuggets (15-11) have now won five games this season after trailing by double digits in the fourth quarter, with this game being no exception.

They were down by 17 points late in the third quarter, but Jokic came alive in the final stretch. Murray capped his 27-point, eight-rebound performance with a clutch shot on one leg with eight seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

Closing lineup adjustment

Head coach Michael Malone learned from a previous mistake. In Thursday’s game in Portland, the Trail Blazers used a timeout to set up their final shot after Jokic had tied the game with 15 seconds left.

The defensive lineup for that possession consisted of Murray, Westbrook, Michael Porter Jr., Aaron Gordon, and Jokic, but the result was an easy layup by Anfernee Simons at the buzzer after a lack of defensive help.

This time, with eight seconds remaining in New Orleans, Murray’s 20-footer tied the game at 119. The Pelicans called a timeout.

For this defensive possession, Malone deployed Westbrook, Christian Braun, Peyton Watson, Gordon, and Jokic.

Porter had been removed from the closing lineup after struggling on both ends, while Braun and Watson, two promising young perimeter defenders, were brought in. They, along with Westbrook, forced C.J. McCollum into a tough shot at the buzzer.

Malone stuck with Westbrook and Braun during overtime, with Porter remaining on the bench. Braun played nearly 39 minutes, the second-most on the team. Murray also contributed with three steals, including a crucial one in the final minute of overtime.

Jokic’s slow start

There’s a reasonable argument that over-relying on Jokic could be detrimental to the Nuggets’ long-term success. The concern is that too many minutes, touches, and stats in December could wear him down.

However, even if this viewpoint is valid, Jokic’s performance on Sunday didn’t meet the expected level of aggressiveness, particularly against the Pelicans’ centers.

It wasn’t until late in the game that Jokic made his presence felt. Despite finishing with 27 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists, he had been passive against Yves Missi and Daniel Theis earlier in the game.

He missed a couple of opportunities at the rim in the scoreless first quarter and, combined in the second and third quarters, only attempted two of his seven shots from inside 10 feet. The other five were jumpers from 13 feet or more. He also took just five free throws.

Defensively, Jokic was part of the problem as the Pelicans outscored the Nuggets 14-6 in the paint during the third quarter. The Pelicans extended their lead to 91-74 at the 1:32 mark, taking advantage of the Nuggets’ perimeter defense and Jokic’s absence in the paint.

Despite this slow start, Jokic’s commitment to posting up in the final stages was crucial for Denver’s comeback. He scored seven points in a two-minute stretch to help the Nuggets regain the lead, and he added six more points to set the Pelicans back at the start of overtime.

Defensive lapses and transition issues

The Nuggets had little reason to appear fatigued in New Orleans, given their recent schedule with only three games in the last 13 days. However, their transition defense remained a significant concern.

Entering the game, the Nuggets had been allowing 18.2 fast-break points per game, the fourth-worst in the NBA. By halftime, the Pelicans had already scored 15 fast-break points. The problem wasn’t just turnovers—Denver committed 22 throughout the game—but players often hesitated on 50-50 balls.

At one point in the second quarter, Porter had a chance to rebound his own missed 3-pointer, but as the long rebound bounced toward him, he turned and jogged toward the defensive end. An opponent seized the opportunity and raced past him for an easy layup.

The Pelicans finished the game with 23 transition points and shot 56% from 2-point range. Though the Nuggets escaped with a win, their defensive flaws continue to be a concern.

Jamal Murray’s clutch shot secures a thrilling victory for the Nuggets against the Kings

Jamal Murray scored a team-high 28 points and made the game-winning shot with 8.6 seconds left, leading the Denver Nuggets to a 130-129 win over the Sacramento Kings on Monday night.

Nikola Jokic achieved his 140th career triple-double with 20 points, 14 rebounds, and 13 assists, helping the Nuggets secure their third straight win.

The Nuggets, who had a 23-point lead in the second quarter, fell behind by 10 points with 4:10 remaining in the game but made a strong comeback.

The Kings took a 129-128 lead with 20.5 seconds left after a dunk from DeMar DeRozan, prompting the Nuggets to call a timeout.

Murray then made a 17-foot shot, assisted by Jokic, to give Denver the lead for good. DeRozan missed a 6-foot shot at the buzzer, and the Nuggets won.

Sacramento quickly recovered after falling behind 24-6 early and 44-21 in the second quarter. Doug McDermott hit three 3-pointers, and DeRozan scored 11 points, including three three-point plays, as the Kings outscored the Nuggets 47-41 in the second period.

Sacramento went into halftime trailing 75-68, setting the stage for a close second half.

With 4:10 left in the game, the Nuggets were down 119-109 but went on a 14-3 run to take a 123-122 lead on a 10-foot shot by Jokic with 1:15 remaining.

The teams exchanged quick baskets, with DeRozan’s dunk giving the Kings a one-point lead before Murray’s go-ahead shot for Denver.

Jokic finished with his 10th triple-double of the season, leading the league. He is now third all-time in triple-doubles, behind Russell Westbrook (200) and Oscar Robertson (181). Westbrook also came close to a triple-double, finishing with 18 points, 10 assists, and 9 rebounds.

Aaron Gordon added 24 points, Julian Strawther scored 13, and Michael Porter Jr. had 11 for the Nuggets.

Sacramento’s De’Aaron Fox was the leading scorer with 29 points, while Domantas Sabonis had 28 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals.

Malik Monk finished with 25 points and a team-high 10 assists for the Kings. DeRozan had 17 points, McDermott scored 16, and Keon Ellis added 12.

Jamal Murray scored 20 points in his return, leading the Denver Nuggets to a dominant victory over the Los Angeles Clippers

Jamal Murray returned from a hamstring injury to score 20 points, and Michael Porter Jr. added 17 as the Denver Nuggets defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 120-98 on Friday, winning consecutive games for the first time in a month.

Nikola Jokic contributed 16 points, while Aaron Gordon and Peyton Watson each scored 14. Jokic, who had scored a combined 104 points in the previous two games without Murray, allowed others to take charge and matched his lowest scoring game of the season.

This game was the second of three scheduled matchups between the teams in Denver, added after NBA Cup group play concluded.

Kevin Porter Jr. and Norman Powell both scored 16 points for the Clippers, who lost their third straight game, tying their season-high streak. James Harden finished with 15 points, and Ivica Zubac had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Kawhi Leonard, who returned to practice this week after a knee injury, is still not ready for his season debut.

The Clippers led 55-50 early in the second half, but the Nuggets quickly reclaimed the lead at 59-58 less than five minutes into the third quarter. Denver then went on a 14-2 run to build a 73-60 lead.

The Nuggets extended their advantage to 83-69 heading into the final quarter, with Michael Porter scoring 12 points in the third, while the team shot 57.9 percent.

Denver pushed their lead to 20 points at 98-78 with 7:44 left after Watson’s two free throws and maintained control of the game from there.

Despite a slow start, the Clippers went on an 18-0 run in the second quarter to take a 44-38 lead. However, the Nuggets regained the lead at 48-47 by halftime, with Jokic and Gordon each contributing nine points and five rebounds.

Russell Westbrook, playing against his former team for the third time this season, had five points and five assists in 24 minutes off the bench for Denver.

Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets are hoping the third matchup will be the one they win against the Clippers

After their best performance in a non-overtime game this season, the Denver Nuggets are aiming to win back-to-back games for the first time in a month when they face the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday.

The Nuggets had been struggling with seven losses in 11 games, including one of their two defeats against the Clippers this season. However, they broke out offensively with a 141-111 road win over the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday. Nikola Jokic led the way with 48 points, 14 rebounds, and eight assists.

Jokic, who has won three MVP awards in the last four years, is aiming for another MVP this season. He currently leads the NBA in rebounds with 13.6 per game and ranks second in both points (32.3) and assists (10.2). He scored 104 points over the past two games, but his 56-point performance on Saturday ended in a loss to the Washington Wizards.

Jokic’s scoring surge comes as Jamal Murray deals with a hamstring injury that has kept him out of the past two games. Murray is expected to be questionable for Friday’s game. Dario Saric is also expected to return after missing the last two games with an ankle injury.

In his first season with the Nuggets, Russell Westbrook, who previously played for the Clippers, has averaged 6.4 assists per game. With Murray sidelined, Westbrook has stepped up, averaging 11.5 assists in the past two games.

“When Russ is out there with Nikola, he’s just always looking for him,” said Nuggets head coach Michael Malone. “He’s always trying to find him. And that makes complete sense to me. You’re playing with the best player in the world. You might want to give him the ball.”

Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Clippers (NBA)

Norman Powell has been the key player for the Clippers, averaging 32.5 points in their two wins against the Nuggets. Powell leads the Clippers with 23.6 points per game this season.

Although Powell has returned from a hamstring injury, James Harden (groin) missed Sunday’s 117-106 home loss to the Atlanta Hawks, and Terance Mann (finger) was also absent. Kawhi Leonard (knee) has not played this season but has finally returned to practice as he gets closer to making his season debut.

Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue hoped to keep the team competitive until Leonard’s return, and their 14-11 record through the first two months suggests they have done so. While Leonard won’t travel with the team for Friday’s game, his return to practice has provided a boost.

“It raised our energy just for our guys to see him on the floor,” Lue said. “It brought a juice to our team, so we needed that jolt, especially going through the schedule we’ve been through. It was really good to see him out there.”

While waiting for Leonard’s return, the Clippers have focused on defense, which is allowing only 107.4 points per game, the fifth-best mark in the NBA.

James Harden, 35, has been playing at a high level for the Clippers, averaging 21.6 points, his highest since the 2021-22 season. He has also contributed 8.5 assists and 6.8 rebounds while playing in 24 of 25 games.

Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets defeat the Hawks

Nikola Jokic scored 48 points to help the Denver Nuggets beat the Atlanta Hawks 141-111 on Sunday, ending the Hawks’ six-game winning streak.

Jokic made 17 of 29 shots, adding 14 rebounds and eight assists. After scoring a career-high 56 points against the Washington Wizards on Saturday, Jokic set the tone by scoring 13 points in the first quarter and 25 points by halftime.

The Nuggets also got 26 points and seven rebounds from Michael Porter Jr. and 17 points with eight rebounds from Christian Braun. Denver has now won four straight games against Atlanta.

The top scorers for Atlanta were De’Andre Hunter, who scored 20 points, and Dyson Daniels, who had 18 points and five steals. Trae Young was held to 15 points and made only one point from four shots in the first half. Young had recently posted 31 points and 20 assists against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Trae Young takes the ball forward

The Nuggets snapped a two-game losing streak and bounced back from a tough loss to Washington, a team that had lost 16 games in a row. Unlike that game, where the Nuggets trailed by as many as 15 points, Denver took control early against the short-handed Hawks and led 38-23 after the first quarter.

Atlanta made a run to cut Denver’s lead to 11 points in the second quarter, mainly when Jokic was off the floor. The Nuggets finished the half strong, with Jokic hitting a 3-pointer from just inside half court with 1.1 seconds left, giving Denver a 71-48 lead at halftime.

The Nuggets led by as many as 30 points in the third quarter and took a 106-84 lead into the fourth.

The Hawks had a scare when Hunter was hit with an elbow to the head midway through the third quarter. He was taken to the locker room for examination but returned to the game later.

Atlanta played without two key players, second-leading scorer Jalen Johnson (right shoulder soreness) and Bogdan Bogdanovic (left quad contusion).

Key players shine as the Nuggets take on the red-hot Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks will try to extend their winning streak to seven games on Sunday evening when they face the Denver Nuggets, led by Nikola Jokic.

Atlanta won its sixth straight game, the longest active winning streak in the Eastern Conference, by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 134-132 in overtime on Friday.

The Nuggets have lost their last two games, including a surprising 122-113 loss to Washington on Saturday that ended the Wizards’ 16-game losing streak. Jokic scored a career-high 56 points — 23 of which came in the third quarter — and added 16 rebounds and eight assists.

Last season, the Nuggets won both games against Atlanta, defeating them 129-122 in Atlanta and winning 142-110 in Denver. Denver has won the last three matchups between the teams.

In Atlanta’s win over the Lakers, Trae Young had a historic performance. He made the game-winning shot, scored 31 points, and recorded 20 assists, becoming the first player in franchise history to have at least 30 points and 20 assists in a game. He also grabbed four rebounds and had two steals.

“My confidence comes from the work that I’ve put in over the years,” Young said. “I’ve put so much work in and so many hours over the years that a few missed shots, even in the last few games, isn’t going to stop me from shooting the next 3.”

Trae Young takes the ball forward

During their six-game winning streak, the Hawks are averaging 122.7 points, almost five more than their season average of 117.3. Young is averaging 21.2 points and a league-leading 12.3 assists per game, with Jalen Johnson contributing 19.8 points and 9.9 rebounds, and De’Andre Hunter averaging 19.2 points.

“I’m proud of the way we’re playing, but not because of any comparison to other teams or any past success,” said Atlanta coach Quin Snyder. “These guys are their own team. For them to continue to build an identity that they can feel and replicate, I think that’s the main thing.”

Jokic is averaging 31.4 points, 13.6 rebounds, and 10.3 assists this season. However, his numbers are lower against the Hawks. In 18 career games against Atlanta, he averages 18.6 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 6.7 assists.

On Saturday, Denver was down by as many as 15 points in the third quarter and could not recover.

“I don’t care if a team is 20-3 like Cleveland or has lost 16 in a row like Washington, if you wait to start playing hard in this league, what happened tonight is exactly what’s going to happen to you,” said Denver coach Michael Malone. “We’ve seen this happen time and time again.”

After a five-game winning streak in early November, the Nuggets have gone 4-7. Malone pointed out that the team’s issues are mainly on defense.

“We have a lot of issues, mainly on the defensive end of the floor,” he said. “We play a team on (Sunday) that’s won six in a row. That’s one thing about the NBA, no one feels sorry for you, and we have to all realize that we all have to start participating in our own recovery. No one is going to give you an olive branch.”

Wizards defeat Nuggets to snap 16-game losing streak, despite Nikola Jokic’s 56-point performance

Jordan Poole scored 39 points to lead the Washington Wizards to a 122-113 win over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday, ending their 16-game losing streak. This victory came despite Nikola Jokic’s career-high 56 points.

Poole made a career-best nine 3-pointers and was one of four Wizards players to score in double figures. Justin Champagnie scored 23 points, Jonas Valanciunas had 20 points and 12 rebounds, Jared Butler added 12 points, and Carlton Carrington chipped in with 10 points. Washington’s 16-game losing streak matched a franchise record.

The Nuggets were without Jamal Murray (hamstring) and Aaron Gordon (calf), so they relied heavily on Jokic. The three-time NBA MVP made 22 of 38 shots, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range, and also grabbed 16 rebounds while dishing out eight assists. His 56 points was the second-highest in Nuggets history, just behind David Thompson’s 73 in 1978.

For the Nuggets, Julian Strawther scored 18 points off the bench, Christian Braun added 14 points, and Michael Porter Jr. contributed 11 points. Denver has now lost three of its last four games.

The Wizards, shooting 48.4 percent from the floor, earned their first win since October 30, even without their No. 1 pick, Alex Sarr, who missed the game due to a sore back.

Washington led by as much as 15 points during the game. They went on a 7-0 run to take a 30-19 lead with 3:26 left in the first quarter. The Wizards scored a season-high 69 points in the first half, leading 69-57 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Wizards extended their lead to 78-63 after Valanciunas made two free throws with 9:15 left. But the Nuggets cut the lead to 81-77 after Jokic completed a three-point play with 5:22 remaining. Jokic added another basket to make it 91-88 with 2:08 left in the third. Butler’s layup with 0.3 seconds left gave Washington a 99-93 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Jokic scored 23 points on 9-of-20 shooting in the third. Poole led the Wizards with 14 points in the quarter.

Washington opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run, pushing their lead to 106-93 on Carrington’s floater with 9:56 left. Strawther’s basket inside cut the Nuggets’ deficit to 116-111 with 1:29 remaining, but Denver couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Nuggets finished 5-of-24 from three-point range, while the Wizards made 16 of 41.

The Washington Wizards will face the Denver Nuggets at home, hoping to avoid a place in franchise history for the wrong reasons

The Washington Wizards will aim to avoid setting a new franchise record for consecutive losses when they face the Denver Nuggets on Saturday in Washington, D.C.

The Wizards have now lost 16 games in a row, matching a franchise record set in the 2009-10 season. They are currently in last place in the Eastern Conference, but coach Brian Keefe believes this is all part of the learning process for a young team.

“These guys believe in what we’re doing, they believe in the process,” Keefe said Thursday night after a 137-101 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. “We’re building some habits that are important and we have to build them when times are tough. Every team has their moments, it’s how you deal with those moments, but I’ve always believed in the character of our team.”

Out of the 16 losses, only one has been by less than 10 points, a nine-point loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Nov. 13. Three of the last four losses have been by 25 points or more.

This is the second straight season the Wizards have lost 16 games in a row, making them one of only six NBA teams to have such long losing streaks in consecutive seasons. The record for the longest losing streak in a single season is 28 games, set by the Detroit Pistons last year.

Wizards second-year forward Bilal Coulibaly has especially struggled. He was 0-of-10 from the field against the Mavericks, and in the past four games, he is 4-of-31 from the field and 1-of-12 from 3-point range.

Keefe remains confident in Coulibaly.

Los Angeles Clippers and Denver Nuggets

“I think he’s a little out of rhythm, sometimes different things can cause some of that,” Keefe said. “Sometimes you have to go through those things in a season and in your career. I have great faith in his character and who he is. He will get out of this.”

Jordan Poole leads the Wizards with 20 points and five assists per game. No. 1 pick Alexandre Sarr is averaging 10.6 points per game and playing 26.8 minutes per game. The Wizards also face the toughest schedule in the league this month, according to NBA.com.

“I embrace the challenges,” Keefe said. “The schedule is the schedule. You have to go after it and I think that’s what our group is about.”

The Nuggets have been alternating wins and losses over their past eight games and are ranked eighth in the Western Conference. They allowed 22 three-pointers in a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night while making only six themselves.

Denver has yet to find the rhythm that made them an NBA powerhouse in the past two seasons.

“We’re a team that’s trying to find itself,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. “I think everyone has to own where they’re at, where we’re at, and it starts with me as the head coach to look in the mirror and say what can I do better and how can I help this team more.”

Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic leads the Nuggets with 29.9 points and tops the NBA with 13.4 rebounds. Five different Nuggets are averaging at least 15 points per game, but defensively, the team ranks 24th in the NBA, allowing 116.8 points per game.

This will be the 101st matchup between the two teams. Denver has won the last six games in the series.

Cavaliers’ 3-point shooting outshines Nuggets, even with a dominant performance from Nikola Jokic

Nikola Jokic recorded his 139th career triple-double with 27 points, 20 rebounds, and 11 assists on Wednesday at Cleveland, moving into third place on the all-time triple-double list. However, despite his impressive performance, the Denver Nuggets were defeated 126-114 by the Cleveland Cavaliers, who dominated with their 3-point shooting.

Jokic’s triple-double broke a tie with Magic Johnson for third place, and it marked his second triple-double this season with 20 or more points and 20 or more rebounds.

The Cavaliers, led by Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Caris LeVert, and Evan Mobley, made 17 3-pointers and scored a total of 93 points. Mitchell, who scored 28 points and hit 6 of 10 from beyond the arc, led the charge.

The Cavaliers led almost the entire game, with their advantage reaching as much as 18 points during the second half. Denver did manage to narrow the gap to single digits late in the game with a 7-0 run.

LeVert contributed 21 points off the bench and hit five 3-pointers on six attempts. He helped stop Denver’s rally by hitting a 3-pointer after Mitchell added another long-range shot. Those two consecutive 3-pointers ended any chance of a comeback for the Nuggets.

Cleveland’s shooting was exceptional, as they made 22 of 48 3-pointers, with five players hitting multiple shots from deep. Meanwhile, the Nuggets struggled, hitting only 6 of 24 from 3-point range.

Mobley finished with 20 points, hitting 3 of 5 from 3-point range, and added nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Garland scored 24 points and had four assists, while Jarrett Allen contributed eight points, six assists, and 15 rebounds.

For Denver, Aaron Gordon scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Jamal Murray added 19 points, and Russell Westbrook and Christian Braun both scored 10 points.

Nikola Jokic scores 38 points to lead Nuggets in comeback win over Warriors

Nikola Jokic scored 15 of his 38 points in the fourth quarter, and the Denver Nuggets came back from an 11-point deficit in the last 6:13 to beat the Golden State Warriors 119-115 in the NBA Cup on Tuesday night.

Golden State won the West Group C with a 3-1 record and moved on to the knockout round, while Denver finished 2-2.

Jokic also had 10 rebounds, six assists, and five steals. Michael Porter Jr. scored 22 points, Aaron Gordon added 15 points, Jamal Murray had 12 points, and Christian Braun scored 11 for Denver.

The Warriors, playing without forward Draymond Green due to a calf injury, lost their fifth straight game despite 24 points and 11 assists from Stephen Curry. Jonathan Kuminga scored 19 points, and Andrew Wiggins, Brandin Podziemski, and Moses Moody each scored 13 points. Gary Payton II contributed 11 points.

It was 113-106 after Curry’s layup with 4:03 left, but Denver came back. Jokic assisted Gordon for a dunk, then hit a short jumper. Murray made two free throws, and Jokic hit an 18-foot shot to tie the game at 115.

Michael Porter Jr. reacts after the time ends

Clippers defeat Nuggets, contain Nikola Jokic

James Harden scored 39 points, along with 11 assists and nine rebounds, to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to a 126-122 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday night in Inglewood, California.

Harden made six 3-pointers and played the entire second half, while Norman Powell, returning from a six-game absence due to a hamstring injury, made five 3-pointers and finished with 28 points in 25 minutes.

Nikola Jokic had a strong performance for Denver, recording 28 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists. His eighth triple-double of the season and 138th of his career tied him with Magic Johnson for third on the all-time triple-double list. Jokic now trails only Russell Westbrook and Oscar Robertson.

The Clippers extended their home win streak to eight games, though the victory was slightly marred by an injury to Amir Coffey, who had 13 points before injuring his knee after a collision with teammate Ivica Zubac in the third quarter.
