Lakers set to face red-hot Cavs in first game after trade

The NBA wraps up 2024 with the league-leading Cleveland Cavaliers visiting the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday for the final game of the year.

Cleveland enters the game on the second night of a back-to-back and is playing the third game in a four-game Western Conference road trip. On Monday, they dominated Golden State 113-95, limiting the Warriors to just 33-of-99 shooting.

This win was the third time this season the Cavaliers have held an opponent under 100 points, with two of those games happening in the last two weeks. On Dec. 21, they blew out the Philadelphia 76ers 126-99, extending their current seven-game winning streak.

That seven-game run is part of an 11-1 stretch, which has given the Cavaliers their best start in franchise history.

“It’s been a great year. A lot of ups and downs, but we’re in an up right now,” said Cleveland guard Darius Garland, who scored 25 points in Monday’s win. “We’re going to try to keep going up right now. Hope we have a lot more ups going into 2025.”

Meanwhile, the Lakers have won five of their last six games, including a 132-122 win over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday. Anthony Davis led the Lakers with 36 points, 15 rebounds, and eight assists, while Austin Reaves added 26 points and a career-high 16 assists in the absence of LeBron James, who was out with an illness.

Both James and Davis (who is dealing with a sprained left ankle) are listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game.

Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA)

Rookie Dalton Knecht also had 18 points, marking his second consecutive game in double digits. Knecht had a breakout stretch in November, scoring 37 and 27 points in back-to-back games, but struggled in December, averaging just 4.3 points per game over six contests.

Since their last game, the Lakers made a trade with the Brooklyn Nets, sending D’Angelo Russell, Maxwell Lewis, and three second-round picks to Brooklyn in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton.

Russell was averaging 12.4 points per game but was shooting only 41.5% from the floor. Finney-Smith had an average of 10.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in 20 games for Brooklyn, while Milton contributed 7.4 points per game in 27 games, mostly off the bench.

“I’m excited to be back playing meaningful basketball,” said Finney-Smith about the trade. “It’s been awhile, but I’m excited, especially if I can go (vs. Cleveland).”

LeBron James shared his thoughts on the new players: “They bring experience, they bring toughness, and (are) guys who’ve played in big games. They’ve mastered their roles throughout their careers, and I’m looking forward to them getting into our system.”

If the new players are available on Tuesday, their presence could provide the Lakers with additional depth against a Cleveland team that has thrived with strong depth and balance.

Donovan Mitchell (23.6 points per game) and Garland (20.7 points per game) lead a group of six Cavaliers players averaging double digits.

Lakers Beat Warriors but Anthony Davis Injury Poses Challenges for Upcoming Games

The Los Angeles Lakers secured a significant victory over the Golden State Warriors, but it came at a cost when star player Anthony Davis suffered a left ankle injury. Despite the team holding off the Warriors for the win, concern loomed over Davis’s condition. His absence could impact the Lakers’ performance significantly, as Davis has been a linchpin of their success this season.

Fortunately, initial assessments indicate that Davis avoided a serious injury. The Lakers announced that he is day-to-day and will be reevaluated ahead of their next game against the Sacramento Kings. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported that Davis is walking unassisted and could potentially return to action for the matchup on December 28. This news provides some optimism, though caution remains due to Davis’s injury history.

Anthony Davis
Anthony Davis (NBA)

Davis’s potential absence could be a setback for the Lakers as they fight to maintain their playoff position. With LeBron James nearing 40 years old, Davis has taken on a larger share of the offensive responsibilities, playing at an MVP level throughout the season. Losing him, even temporarily, would place additional strain on James and the rest of the team.

The Lakers have a brief respite before their next game, allowing Davis some recovery time. However, the team is expected to prioritize his health and will avoid rushing his return. With two recent wins against the Kings in Sacramento, the Lakers have already established an advantage over their rivals, giving them some breathing room in Davis’s absence.

The Lakers hope Davis won’t miss any games, but they are prepared to adapt if necessary. His availability remains crucial for their success, particularly as the season progresses and postseason implications come into play. For now, the team remains cautiously optimistic about Davis’s recovery.

After parting ways with Coach Mike Brown, the Kings face off against the Lakers

LeBron James has led the Los Angeles Lakers to a strong run ahead of Saturday’s game against the struggling Sacramento Kings, a team dealing with changes after head coach Mike Brown was fired on Friday.

James, who is playing his final game before turning 40, has helped the Lakers win four of their last five games, including a thrilling 115-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Christmas Day. In that game, he scored 31 points and added 10 assists.

Although James will celebrate his 40th birthday on Monday, he is still playing at a high level, averaging 23.5 points per game, along with 7.9 rebounds and 9.0 assists this season. The four-time MVP has only averaged nine or more assists per game twice in his 21 seasons.

James also led the Lakers to a win over the Warriors on Wednesday despite Anthony Davis leaving the game early with an ankle injury. Austin Reaves stepped up, recording 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists for his first triple-double of the season and third of his career. Reaves scored the game-winning layup with 1.7 seconds left.

“It’s always difficult to play without A.D., so I guess our job is even more heightened,” James said. “We have to do a little bit more. Everyone has to chip in, especially on the defensive end because A.D. is our anchor.”

Davis’ status for Saturday’s game is uncertain, which means the Lakers may be without his 25.7 points and 11.4 rebounds. Guard D’Angelo Russell is expected to return after missing the Christmas Day game due to a sprained left thumb.

While Davis is listed as questionable, both James and Rui Hachimura missed Friday’s practice due to illness.

Sacramento Kings (NBA)

In Doug Christie’s first game as interim head coach, the Kings are facing their own availability issues. Domantas Sabonis missed Thursday’s 114-113 loss to the Detroit Pistons because of illness and didn’t practice on Friday.

The Kings also have to deal with the absence of Brown, who was fired after just over two seasons in Sacramento, with the team sitting 12th in the Western Conference with a 13-18 record.

Without Sabonis on Thursday, the Kings seemed to be on track for a win but lost after Detroit’s Jaden Ivey made a go-ahead four-point play with 3.1 seconds left. De’Aaron Fox, who fouled Ivey on the decisive 3-pointer, led the Kings with 26 points.

The Kings allowed 37 points in the fourth quarter and were outscored by 15 in the period. Their struggles on both ends of the floor were too much for Brown to overcome, leading to his firing.

Brown, who conducted Friday’s practice, was dismissed just before the team was set to fly to Los Angeles. Last season, he led the Kings to the playoffs, ending a 16-year postseason drought.

Sacramento’s issues were clear when they led by 19 points in the third quarter on Thursday but allowed Detroit to make 7 of 12 (58.3 percent) from 3-point range in the final period.

“We knew this was a game that was winnable,” Fox said. “We gave ourselves a chance to win going into the fourth quarter and we didn’t do a good job. We gotta be able to finish games better.”

The Kings are currently on a five-game losing streak, which includes two losses to the Lakers last week. The most recent of those losses was a 103-99 defeat on Dec. 21.

This losing streak is the longest for Sacramento since a seven-game slide in January 2022.

LeBron and Bronny James Break NBA Records in Historic Father-Son Debut

LeBron James and his 20-year-old son Bronny made history during the Los Angeles Lakers’ season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves, becoming the first father-son duo to ever play together in an NBA game. This milestone came after years of LeBron expressing his dream of sharing the court with his son, and it was realized when they checked into the game together in the second quarter. The moment was emotional for both, as LeBron recalled how special it was to be at the scorer’s table with Bronny, knowing it was a moment he would never forget.

Their time on the court was brief, lasting about 2 ½ minutes, but filled with significance. LeBron, who had already played 13 minutes, missed two shots before dunking the ball. Bronny had an early offensive rebound and a missed tip-in, followed by a near-miss on his first NBA 3-pointer. Though their playtime was short, the crowd gave them a standing ovation when Bronny exited the game, acknowledging the gravity of the historic moment.

After the Lakers’ 110-103 victory, the father and son shared an intimate moment in the locker room. They stopped in the tunnel to embrace LeBron’s wife, Savannah, and Bronny’s mother, who were both present to witness the history-making event. It was also a special day for the James family, as it was the 10th birthday of LeBron’s younger daughter, Zhuri. The significance of this moment was amplified by the Lakers’ first opening-night win in LeBron’s seven seasons with the team.

LeBron and Bronny James Break NBA Records in Historic Father-Son Debut
LeBron and Bronny James Break NBA Records in Historic Father-Son Debut

LeBron and Bronny’s achievement was echoed by the presence of another iconic father-son duo: Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. The two Major League Baseball stars, who were the first father-son pair to play together in MLB, sat courtside at the game. Their presence symbolized the rare nature of such family achievements in professional sports. The Griffeys and the Jameses shared photos and warm words before the game, reflecting on their respective historic accomplishments.

LeBron had talked about his dream of playing with Bronny for years, even before Bronny was drafted by the Lakers as the 55th overall pick. When the moment finally arrived, LeBron reflected on how surreal it was but emphasized that both father and son stayed focused on their roles within the team. For LeBron, it wasn’t about the spectacle but rather about making sure they contributed to the team’s success. This milestone, while emotional, was approached with professionalism.

Father-son pairings are rare in professional sports, with notable examples like the Griffeys, Tim Raines and his son, and Gordie Howe with his sons. However, LeBron and Bronny’s achievement stands out, as LeBron is still one of the top players in the NBA in his 22nd season. As the Lakers aim to return to championship form, LeBron remains crucial to their success, and Bronny’s addition to the team adds an exciting new dynamic.

Bronny’s path to the NBA was particularly inspiring, especially given his health scare in 2023, when he suffered a cardiac arrest and underwent open-heart surgery. Despite this, Bronny went on to play a shortened season at USC and declared for the NBA draft. The Lakers selected him, and Bronny has since been adjusting to professional life, including practicing and playing in preseason games alongside his father. Both LeBron and Bronny have stressed the importance of preparation and professionalism, knowing it will take time for Bronny to fully adapt to the NBA.

Although the Lakers haven’t revealed how long Bronny will stay on the team, it’s likely he will spend time in the G League with the South Bay Lakers to continue developing his game. LeBron and Lakers coach JJ Redick have spoken highly of the South Bay Lakers’ player development program. With several other small guards on the Lakers’ roster, Bronny may not see regular NBA minutes just yet, but the organization remains committed to his growth and development, making their historic achievement even more meaningful.

NBA roundup: Lakers edge out Warriors with last-second win

Austin Reaves made a crucial layup with just one second remaining to seal a triple-double, while LeBron James scored 31 points, helping the Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Golden State Warriors 115-113 on Wednesday night in San Francisco.

The Lakers lost Anthony Davis early in the game due to a twisted left ankle, but they managed to stay in control for most of the final three quarters, securing their fourth win in the last five games.

With 1:30 left, the Lakers were up 109-100, but Stephen Curry nearly turned the game around. He scored eight points in a 13-4 run, including two tough 3-pointers in the last 12.2 seconds, one of which was a game-tying 31-foot shot with 7.6 seconds remaining.

Reaves finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, while James also recorded 10 assists. Curry led the game with 38 points, most of which came from eight 3-pointers, tying the NBA record for a Christmas game.

Timberwolves 105, Mavericks 99

Anthony Edwards scored 26 points, leading the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves to a win over the Dallas Mavericks. Dallas played the second half without Luka Dončić, who left the game after suffering a left calf strain in the second quarter.

Dončić had 14 points in 16 minutes before the injury, and the Mavericks were down 51-38 at that time. After falling behind by 28 points in the third quarter, Dallas fought back in the fourth, cutting the deficit to 101-99 on a Klay Thompson 3-pointer with 1:05 left. Kyrie Irving, who scored 15 of his 39 points in the final quarter, missed a 3-pointer that could have put Dallas ahead. Edwards then scored on the next possession, extending the Timberwolves’ lead to four points.

76ers 118, Celtics 114

Tyrese Maxey had 33 points and 12 assists to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a win over the Boston Celtics. Joel Embiid added 27 points and nine rebounds, and Caleb Martin scored 23 points, making 7 of 9 three-pointers.

The Celtics, trailing by 15 in the fourth quarter, managed to cut the lead to 116-114 with 4.9 seconds left. However, Embiid made two free throws to seal the game for the 76ers, who have won six of their last eight games.

Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics

Jayson Tatum led Boston with 32 points and 15 rebounds, while Jaylen Brown added 23 points and seven rebounds. The Celtics suffered their second consecutive loss, which was their first such streak of the season.

Knicks 117, Spurs 114

Mikal Bridges scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to lead the New York Knicks to a comeback victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

Bridges and Victor Wembanyama combined for 26 points in a high-scoring fourth quarter, with both teams shooting over 50%. Bridges finished with a season-high 41 points, the second-most by a Knicks player on Christmas Day behind Bernard King’s 60-point performance in 1984. Wembanyama made an impressive debut on Christmas with 42 points, 18 rebounds, four assists, and four blocks.

The Knicks won their fifth straight game, improving to 15-4 since November 15. Miles McBride made a key 3-pointer with 2:43 left, giving the Knicks the lead for good. Jeremy Sochan contributed 21 points and nine rebounds for the Spurs.

Austin Reaves’ clutch performance lifts Lakers past Warriors in Christmas showdown

Austin Reaves made a layup with one second remaining to give the Los Angeles Lakers a 115-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night in San Francisco, capping off his triple-double performance. LeBron James contributed 31 points, adding to his Christmas Day legacy.

Despite losing Anthony Davis early in the game due to a twisted left ankle, the Lakers maintained the lead for most of the final three quarters, securing their fourth win in the last five games.

The Lakers were up 109-100 when James assisted Max Christie for a basket with 1:30 left. However, Stephen Curry almost pulled off a dramatic comeback. After Jonathan Kuminga’s dunk and Dennis Schroder’s 3-pointer, Curry hit two incredible 3-pointers in the last 12.2 seconds, including a game-tying 31-foot shot with 7.1 seconds remaining.

The Lakers then tried to pass the ball to James, but the Warriors double-teamed him, so Reaves took control, driving to the basket and scoring the game-winning layup.

Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets

James, the all-time leading scorer in NBA Christmas games, finished with 31 points, 10 assists, and two steals, making 12 of his 22 shots. Reaves stepped up in place of Davis, scoring 26 points, including four 3-pointers, and also had 10 rebounds and 10 assists, marking his third career triple-double.

Rui Hachimura added 18 points, Max Christie scored 16, and Dalton Knecht contributed 13 for the Lakers, who have appeared in NBA Christmas games for 26 consecutive seasons.

Curry led all scorers with 38 points, mostly from eight 3-pointers, tying the NBA record for Christmas Day games. Andrew Wiggins supported Curry with 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Warriors, who have now lost five of their last six games.

Kuminga finished with 14 points, and Schroder and Trayce Jackson-Davis scored 11 each. Draymond Green had 10 rebounds, six assists, four blocks, and three points.

Lakers aim for another win in their second matchup against the Kings

The Sacramento Kings are hoping that by reducing turnovers and fouls, they can improve their chances in a rematch with the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday afternoon in Sacramento.

In their last game against the Lakers on Thursday, the Kings lost 113-100 despite Austin Reaves scoring 25 points, Anthony Davis 21, and LeBron James 19. The biggest factors in the Lakers’ win were the turnovers and fouls. The Lakers turned 17 Kings turnovers into 24 points and scored 25 points from 21 Sacramento fouls, including a technical.

This gave the Lakers a big advantage, winning 49-24 in those areas. Even though the Kings shot better overall (45.1% to 40.4%) and from three-point range (37.9% to 36.4%), they still lost.

Kings coach Mike Brown pointed out that the reasons for the loss were clear, so he didn’t need to yell at the team. “They know exactly what we have to do. It’s whether or not we go do it. (Thursday), we didn’t go do it,” Brown said. “Somehow, someway, it starts with me. Somehow, someway, I’ve got to figure out how to get them to do it. If need be, I’ve got to find somebody else that can do it.”

The loss was Sacramento’s second straight at home after they won three in a row, including two on the road. The Kings are looking to make the most of a stretch of nine games, with only one on the road, during the holiday season.

LeBron James reacts in the 2nd half

One more key moment in the Lakers’ win was LeBron James playing 34 minutes, allowing him to surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA’s all-time leader in minutes played with 57,471. In comparison, the Kings’ active leader in minutes played is DeMar DeRozan with 39,276.

“It’s just a commitment to the craft and to the passion and love I have for the game,” James said after the game. He also had seven assists and six rebounds in the win. Anthony Davis contributed 19 rebounds, helping the Lakers dominate the boards 53-43.

The Lakers’ depth was another important factor. Although bench scoring had been a concern for the Lakers, D’Angelo Russell scored 16 points and Gabe Vincent added 12, giving Los Angeles a 30-19 advantage in bench scoring.

“I really felt like this might be my favorite win we’ve had all season,” Lakers head coach JJ Redick said. “We had so many different contributions at different times.”

For the Kings, bench scoring has been an issue since Malik Monk moved into the starting lineup on Dec. 1. While Monk has averaged 18.0 points in those eight games, the Sacramento bench has contributed just 24.8 points per game.

De’Aaron Fox led the Kings with 26 points in Thursday’s loss.

JJ Redick: Lakers’ Turnovers Cost Them in Loss to Timberwolves

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick had a rare opportunity for a break to help reset the team and prepare them for a challenging stretch of games.

The Lakers had several days off because of the Emirates NBA Cup, but Redick chose to use the time for his players to recover, as many were dealing with injuries. While the rest likely helped with recovery, it didn’t have much effect on the team’s offense, as they lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night.

Neither team played well, and part of that could be attributed to the long break, but the Lakers had their best defensive performance of the 2024-25 season. However, they struggled with the ball, committing 21 turnovers compared to Minnesota’s 13.

After the game, Redick acknowledged that the turnovers cost the Lakers the win, speaking to Spectrum SportsNet:

“They came in a number of ways,” Redick said. “Some passes that we tried to fit through tight windows. You never want to inbound the ball to the other team after a made field goal and give up a dunk. Some of it was not holding our positioning and timing our sort of physicality to get open on ‘Horns.’ I think we had three turnovers just on ‘Horns’ alone. Yeah, it killed us.”

Coach JJ Redick
Coach JJ Redick (NBA)

While it would be easy to blame rust for the mistakes, Redick emphasized that the problems were more about execution and a lack of focus. One of the worst turnovers came when Rui Hachimura carelessly inbounded the ball to Anthony Davis, who wasn’t paying attention. The Timberwolves stole it and dunked, showing just how bad things were for the Lakers.

Another issue was LeBron James’ absence, which forced Redick to rely on other players to handle the ball and run the offense. But no matter who’s on the court, the Lakers can’t afford to give up the ball so easily, especially against a good team like the Timberwolves.

The Lakers will get a chance to recover on Sunday when they face the Memphis Grizzlies, who have already shown they are especially motivated when playing against the Lakers.

JJ Redick unsure when LeBron James will rejoin Lakers
LeBron James missed the Lakers’ recent game against the Portland Trail Blazers to rest his foot, and now he is away from the team for personal reasons. When asked about James’ return, Redick admitted he wasn’t sure.

Anthony Davis: Lakers Must Play With Confidence When Shooting the Ball

After five days off, Anthony Davis and the Los Angeles Lakers returned to action against the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minneapolis on Friday night.

Although it was clear the Lakers needed a break after their recent road trip, they seemed a bit rusty when they returned. Turnovers, which had not been a problem for the Lakers this season, became an issue as they gave the ball away 22 times in Minnesota, which hurt their chances of winning.

Despite this, the Lakers stayed close throughout the game. However, head coach JJ Redick’s offense struggled to make shots, as they shot just 38.4% from the field and 28.6% from three-point range. After a strong offensive start to the season, the Lakers have had trouble scoring in recent weeks.

Davis didn’t blame the quality of shots, but instead talked about what it will take to break out of this shooting slump, saying, via Spectrum SportsNet:

“Just gotta score. We’re getting good looks but we haven’t been shooting the ball from 3 well. Just gotta make shots. We’re getting great looks. We’re generating open 3s, open looks for our guys. We just gotta be confident enough to make them.”

Davis is optimistic that if the Lakers keep getting open shots, they will eventually start making them:

Anthony Davis
Anthony Davis (NBA)

“You can’t control makes or misses. We just gotta continue to create those looks. If we continue to create those looks, eventually the shots have to fall, especially if guys continue to put in the work and shoot the ball with confidence.”

LeBron James’ absence is also a factor, as losing a key ball-handler and playmaker has made scoring harder. Even though James has had turnover issues recently, his presence is irreplaceable, and his absence may have contributed to the Lakers’ struggles on Friday.

The Lakers face tougher competition in the coming games, so if they want to make the playoffs, they need to improve their decision-making and handle the physicality of other teams.

Anthony Davis isn’t worried about turnovers becoming a long-term problem for the Lakers, as the team has generally done well with ball control. Despite the loss to Minnesota, he’s confident that the turnovers won’t be an ongoing issue.

Timberwolves secure wire-to-wire victory against Lakers without LeBron

Anthony Edwards scored 23 points on 9-for-20 shooting, and the Minnesota Timberwolves held off the Los Angeles Lakers for a 97-87 victory on Friday night in Minneapolis.

Julius Randle added 21 points for Minnesota, which won five of its last six games. Jaden McDaniels scored 18 points, and Rudy Gobert recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Anthony Davis led the Lakers with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Los Angeles, which has now lost eight of its last 11 games, never led in the game. Austin Reaves contributed 18 points, and Max Christie scored 15.

LeBron James was absent due to left foot soreness, marking only the second time this season the Lakers have played without him. James will turn 40 on Dec. 30.

Minnesota shot 40.2 percent (35 of 87) from the field and 28.1 percent (9 of 32) from three-point range. Los Angeles made 38.4 percent of their shots (33 of 86) and 28.6 percent (10 of 35) from beyond the arc.

Anthony Edwards

The Lakers cut the Timberwolves’ lead to 87-82 with 2:33 left in the game. Davis hit a 3-pointer from 25 feet to reduce the gap to five points.

Minnesota responded with a 6-0 run to push their lead back to 11 points. McDaniels made a layup, Edwards hit three of four free throws, and Gobert made one of two free throws during the run.

Los Angeles never got closer than eight points after that.

The Timberwolves were ahead 77-66 at the end of the third quarter. Edwards scored 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting in the third, while no other player on either team scored more than five points in that period.

Minnesota led by as much as 14 points before halftime. Donte DiVincenzo hit a 3-pointer to give the Timberwolves a 32-18 lead with 1:04 left in the first quarter.

The Lakers closed the gap to 50-44 by halftime, with Reaves finishing the half with a 3-pointer assisted by Christie.

Analysis: Only LeBron James truly understands what is happening at the moment and what lies ahead for him

LeBron James was the star in Las Vegas at this time last year, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to win the first-ever NBA Cup. Things are different now.

Lakers coach JJ Redick explained this week that James is missing from practice due to “personal reasons” and “left foot soreness,” which is why he won’t play in the game against Minnesota on Friday. Recently, there’s been talk about possible trades involving James, with teams like Golden State potentially interested if he became available. James is also turning 40 in about two weeks.

Whenever James isn’t playing, it makes headlines. Taking time off for personal reasons raises questions. It could mean he’s hurt, frustrated with the Lakers’ recent struggles, or simply needing a break. But for now, it’s clear he won’t be playing on Friday.

“All of this is very fluid,” Redick said when asked about James’ absence. “All of it is. All of it is. That’s what’s crystallized.”

James holds the power with his no-trade clause. If he wants to be traded, it’s likely he’ll be. If not, he’ll stay with the Lakers, alongside his son Bronny.

LeBron James reacts in the 2nd half

The Lakers only have two games next week, so it’s a good time for James to rest if his foot is bothering him or if the toll of 22 seasons is catching up with him. In short, nobody knows what’s going on except LeBron.

He’s the oldest player in the league, has broken nearly every record, and has more money than he could ever spend. There’s nothing left to prove. He is under contract for next season, but whether he plays after this season is uncertain.

“I’m not going to play that much longer, to be completely honest. I don’t know how many years that is, if it’s one year, two years, whatever the case may be,” James said last month. “I’m not playing ‘til the wheels fall off. I’m not going to be that guy. I’m not going to be the guy who’s disrespecting the game because I just want to be out on the floor. That won’t be me.”

Despite his lower scoring average (23 points per game, his lowest since his rookie season), his rebounding and assist numbers are up. The only other player averaging 23 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists per game this season is Denver’s Nikola Jokic, a strong MVP contender. So, his performance is still solid.

LeBron James kneels on the court in the 2nd half

It’s also worth noting that the NBA trade season is heating up. Starting Sunday, 85 players are eligible to be traded, and there’s a lot of buzz around big names, including Jimmy Butler’s future in Miami.

“Narratives,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Thursday. “That’s going to happen, you know, in every organization at some point during the season.”

This might be one of those moments for the Lakers. As of Friday, they’ve lost seven of their last 10 games, with four of those losses being by at least 25 points. James has seemed frustrated, but that’s understandable after tough losses.

Even though James isn’t playing, his presence is still felt in Las Vegas. There’s a large advertisement with his image near the baggage claim at the airport, promoting a liquor company. But on the court, he won’t be seen, and it’s unclear when he will be next.

Anthony Davis leads the Lakers to a win over the Blazers, snapping their three-game losing streak

Anthony Davis scored 30 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked five shots to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 107-98 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night.

D’Angelo Russell had a season-high 28 points and 14 assists for the Lakers, who played without LeBron James (foot). Rui Hachimura added 23 points and four steals, helping the Lakers end a three-game losing streak.

For the Trail Blazers, Shaedon Sharpe scored 19 points, and Deandre Ayton had 14 points and a season-high 19 rebounds before fouling out. Anfernee Simons also scored 14 points, while Scoot Henderson and Deni Avdija each added 13.

The Lakers took control in the fourth quarter when Russell made two 3-pointers and Cam Reddish added another during a 9-0 run, giving Los Angeles a 97-81 lead with 7:14 left to play.

Hachimura and Davis each hit 3-pointers, and the Lakers’ lead grew to 103-85 with 5:31 remaining. The lead reached 20 points, and the Lakers secured just their third win in the last 10 games.

Los Angeles made 45.8 percent of their shots, including 13 of 34 from 3-point range, with Russell hitting five of those.

Atlanta Hawks and Los Angeles Lakers

Austin Reaves (back/pelvis) missed his fifth straight game for the Lakers.

Jerami Grant scored only three points on 1-of-12 shooting for Portland. The Trail Blazers shot 41.7 percent overall and 9 of 36 from 3-point range.

Portland’s Robert Williams III (concussion) missed his sixth straight game.

The Trail Blazers were down by 14 points at halftime but started the second half with a 9-0 run, pulling within 59-54 on a three-point play by Simons.
