Luka Doncic excited to begin fresh chapter with Lakers in Los Angeles

Luka Doncic was officially introduced as the Los Angeles Lakers’ new star on Tuesday, just days after a surprising trade from the Dallas Mavericks.

At 25 years old, Doncic is now set to team up with LeBron James on the court, joining a franchise where Kobe Bryant became a legend. Doncic has always spoken highly of both Bryant and James. “Just for Kobe to know my name was amazing for me,” Doncic said about his first meeting with Bryant.

Doncic is expected to play a key role in the Lakers’ push for the playoffs, but he is still recovering from a calf injury he suffered on Christmas Day.

He won’t be playing in the Lakers’ road game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday, and there is no confirmed date for his debut with the team yet. However, the Lakers plan to have a five-on-five practice on Wednesday, which will allow Doncic to test his calf and play with his new teammates.

When asked about the surprise and disappointment from Mavericks fans after the trade, which sent All-NBA player Anthony Davis to Dallas, Doncic remained optimistic. “I’m just excited to be here to start this new journey, and obviously at some point, I knew this was going to happen, but I would say I always take the high road,” Doncic said.

“I had my amazing moments in Dallas with all my teammates, coaches and most importantly the fans. They always supported me, and it was an amazing journey.”

With James and Davis already forming a successful inside-out duo for the Lakers, the combination of James and Doncic will bring a similar skillset to the team, as both players can score, shoot from long range, pass, and rebound.

“It’s just a dream come true, you know,” Doncic said about playing alongside the four-time MVP. “I always say I look up to him. There are so many things I can learn from him and I’m excited just to learn everything. I get to play with him and it’s an amazing feeling.”

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka confirmed that the trade idea first came up when the Lakers visited Dallas in early January. The deal was kept quiet until it was finalized late Saturday, right after the Lakers beat the New York Knicks on the road.

“I think Luka Doncic joining forces with the Los Angeles Lakers is a seismic event in NBA history,” Pelinka said. “We have a 25-year-old global superstar that is going to get on the stage of the most popular and influential basketball brand on the globe. And I think when those two powerful forces get together, it brings basketball joy to the world because that’s how Luka plays. He plays with joy.”

Doncic admitted that the trade was a surprise to him as well. “Everybody was surprised so you can imagine how surprised I was,” he said. “I was almost asleep so when I got a call, I had to check that it was April 1. I didn’t believe it at first. It was a bit of a shock. I had hard moments for me. (Dallas) was home. But (now) I get to play for the greatest club in the world and I’m excited for this new journey.”

Pelinka addressed criticisms that Doncic’s fitness had played a part in the Mavericks’ decision to trade him. “I think greatness is an evolution and a process,” Pelinka said. “And I think if you are striving for perfection, as we are as an organization, or as a player is, you’re going to have challenges to make yourself better until you don’t play anymore.”

Along with Doncic, the Lakers also received Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris in the trade. The Mavericks received Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round draft pick. The Jazz helped facilitate the trade and will receive Jalen Hood-Schifino and a 2025 second-round draft pick via the Los Angeles Clippers.

This season, Doncic has averaged 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists in 22 games, all as a starter. He has spent his entire seven-year NBA career with Dallas, after being selected third overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2018 draft. The Hawks traded his rights to the Mavericks for the rights to Trae Young.

Had Doncic stayed with the Mavericks, he likely would have received a lucrative contract this summer, reportedly a five-year, $345 million supermax deal. However, with the trade, he is no longer eligible for that contract.

On the other side, 31-year-old Davis is having another strong season, averaging 25.7 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.1 blocks in 42 games. He is a 10-time All-Star, a five-time All-NBA selection, and a five-time All-Defensive Team member.

In 2018, LeBron urged Doncic to “strive for greatness,” and now as teammates in Los Angeles, that message remains the same

Luka Doncic entered the NBA in 2018, calling LeBron James his idol. During their first game against each other, Doncic asked James for his jersey. After the game, he went to the Lakers’ locker room to get it, and James wrote a message on the purple jersey: “Strive for greatness.”

Now, nearly seven years later, both players are ready to strive for greatness together. A recent trade sent Doncic to the Lakers and Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks, creating a new superstar duo. James has teamed up with other big stars like Kyrie Irving, Dwyane Wade, and Davis, and now he gets to play with Doncic.

The question is: will it work? The answer will come in time, but James has already won titles with Irving in Cleveland, Wade in Miami, and Davis with the Lakers in 2020.

For Doncic, the moment he played against James for the first time is still memorable. “It was amazing,” he said. “It was something special for me, for sure. I looked up to him as my idol. It was just great for me. Like I said, it was special, and it will be a day that I remember.”

The Lakers hope this new partnership will create many more memorable days. The trade was finalized after James, at 40 years old, had an outstanding performance against the New York Knicks, scoring 33 points, recording 12 assists, and grabbing 11 rebounds. It was one of his many incredible performances at his age, continuing to show he’s still one of the best in the game.

James, even at 40, is unstoppable when playing at his best. He’s had four games with over 30 points since turning 40, tying Michael Jordan’s record. He averages 25 points per game at 40 and has more triple-doubles at that age than any other player in NBA history.

Luka Doncic looks over notes in the timeout

Now, James gets to play alongside Doncic, who brings a lot of similarities to his game. “I love everything about his game,” James said in 2022. “The way he plays the game reminds me of the way I play the game. We’re just triple threats.

We rebound. We pass, which is the No. 1 thing on our mind, trying to keep our teammates engaged and keeping our teammates feeling good on the floor, keeping our teammates in rhythm. And we will put 40 on you, too, if you disrespect us.”

Doncic, like James, has accomplished things few others have. He recorded one of only two 60-point triple-doubles in NBA history, alongside James Harden. He’s also one of only four players to score 73 points in a game. His scoring average ranks third in history behind Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain.

Now, they’re teammates, ready to chase big wins. James has lasted 22 years in the league because of his commitment to fitness, and the Lakers are hoping some of that discipline will rub off on Doncic. Doncic, despite not always being in peak shape, still delivers impressive performances.

It seems like James was almost predicting this pairing when the All-Star Game had captains choosing teams. James often picked Doncic for his team, calling him “Luka Magic,” and they spent time together on the bench and during warm-ups. Doncic never stopped looking up to James.

“He’s the best,” Doncic said.

On the night Doncic went to get that signed jersey, he never made it inside the Lakers’ locker room. Now, he’s not just outside the door—he’s inside. And there’s a new jersey waiting for him. It has a different name and number on the back, but the message will stay the same. The Lakers brought Doncic in to strive for greatness.

Anthony Davis speaks out for the first time after his surprise trade

Anthony Davis spoke for the first time on Monday after his shocking trade from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Luka Dončić.

“6 years ago, I came here with the vision to win a Championship, and I will never forget the moment we did! The business of basketball is a business just like all other businesses,” Davis shared on Instagram with a video showing clips from his time in LA.

“I am grateful to the city where my first ring came from, grew my family and friendships and I will always have a home here. My family and I thank everyone who made this place home and we are still thinking of those that lost their homes in the fires. To my teammates: our friendships go beyond a locker room and a jersey.

“LA will always have a special place in my heart. Every great story has an exciting next chapter … Dallas – Here we come!”

In one of the most surprising trades in NBA history, the Lakers traded Davis, Max Christie, and their 2029 first-round pick to the Mavericks in exchange for Dončić, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris.

Davis (left) will now play for the Mavericks, while Dončić (right) will join the Lakers.

The trade caught the entire NBA off guard, with top players around the league sharing their shock on social media.

Luka Doncic gestures in the 2nd half

Davis was traded to the Lakers from the New Orleans Pelicans in 2019 and won an NBA title in his first season with the team.

Though Davis struggled with injuries at times, he was an incredibly productive player when healthy.

He formed a strong partnership with LeBron James, who wished him well in the comments of his Instagram post: “My DOG!!!! You dat muthaf*cka!! Go do you CHAMP!!!!”

The 31-year-old Davis is a nine-time All-Star, four-time All-NBA First Team selection, five-time NBA All-Defensive Team member, and a two-time Olympic gold medalist with Team USA.

Now, Davis will team up with Kyrie Irving in Dallas, while James and Dončić will wear the Lakers’ purple and gold.

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry also reacted to the trade, expressing his surprise after the Warriors’ win over the Orlando Magic on Monday.

“Just because of how out of the blue it was – no hints, no rumors, not a single sign – especially after the (Mavericks) came out of the (NBA) Finals,” Curry said. “That’s a reminder that there are only a few in this league that can go to sleep with any type of confidence.

“It’s a very unique situation. The idea that this happened is pretty crazy. When you hear a trade like that, you think somebody’s hacked.”

What’s Next for the Lakers Following Luka Dončić?

The Los Angeles Lakers are known for making big moves during the offseason, with notable past additions like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis.

This time, however, they surprised everyone by acquiring Luka Dončić midseason in a trade that shocked the NBA. With Dončić now as their franchise centerpiece, the next step for the Lakers will be building a contender around him.

What’s Next for the Lakers After Luka Dončić?

With the trade deadline fast approaching, the Lakers must act quickly to form a strong roster around Dončić. The challenge lies in balancing LeBron James’ desire for an immediate championship with the long-term goal of keeping Dončić happy in Los Angeles.

The Lakers’ Immediate Needs

With Dončić, James, and Austin Reaves, the Lakers have one of the best offensive trios in the league. However, there are still some significant gaps in the rest of the roster.

Center Rotation

The Lakers are missing a reliable center. Maxi Kleber and Jaxson Hayes don’t fill the need. Kleber has injury concerns, and Hayes has yet to prove he’s a consistent rim protector. Christian Wood could return, but the Mavericks let him go for a reason.

Dončić thrives with centers who can protect the rim and finish alley-oops, a role the Lakers currently lack. This position is their top priority.

Point-of-attack Defender

Dončić is excited to team up again with Dorian Finney-Smith, but the Lakers need more 3-and-D players. Jarred Vanderbilt is a strong defender but struggles to shoot. Rookie Dalton Knecht is a promising shooter but lacks defensive ability. The loss of Max Christie hurts, as the Lakers were 17-8 with him starting. He had become the point-of-attack defender the team needed alongside Reaves.

To stay competitive this season, the Lakers must add at least one center and one reliable 3-and-D wing/guard before the trade deadline.

The Bigger Picture: Luka’s Future Co-Star

LeBron James is 40, and while he can’t be the long-term co-star for Dončić, Reaves could fill that role. However, there are questions about how well Reaves fits next to Dončić. Reaves has been playing well as a point guard this season, but he’ll need to adjust to being a secondary playmaker.

Luka Doncic (NBA)

More concerning is Reaves’ defense. He played well as a rookie but has struggled as his offensive role expanded. Without a top-tier center behind him, these weaknesses could become more obvious.

Dončić will be a free agent in 2026, and the Lakers need to prove they can build a team capable of winning for the long haul. Role players won’t be enough—they need another star to keep him in Los Angeles.

Who’s Next on the Lakers Trade Block After Dončić Trade?

Several Lakers players could be moved before the trade deadline:

  • Rui Hachimura: A solid 3-point shooter (42%) over two seasons, but weak on defense and rebounding.
  • Gabe Vincent: A good defender and improving shooter, but mainly a salary-matching piece.
  • Dalton Knecht: Valuable but makes under $4 million, so he would need to be bundled with another player to bring in a significant return.
  • Jarred Vanderbilt: Injury-prone with three years left on his contract, making him harder to trade.

With limited trade assets, the Lakers will need to be strategic with their moves.

The Road Ahead

The Lakers are in a tough situation. They need to add help now while keeping their long-term options open for Dončić’s future. If they can’t land another star, they will need to build a strong supporting cast to make Los Angeles an attractive place for future players.

The next few days will be crucial in determining if the Lakers can compete with Dončić in 2025 or if they will have to wait for a bigger move later. One thing is certain: this trade is just the start.

Bold Trade Proposal: Davante Adams to the Chargers in Los Angeles?

The Los Angeles Chargers are in need of more weapons, and how they address this issue this offseason will be interesting to watch.

With plenty of cap space available, the Chargers will need to use some of that money to keep their own free agents, but they should still have enough room to make a significant move.

Los Angeles could trade for superstar wide receiver Davante Adams. His idea is that the Chargers would send a third-round pick to the New York Jets in exchange for Adams.

“Ladd McConkey is an exciting young player, but it would be great to see Justin Herbert working with a dynamic duo again,” Ballentine wrote. “Going from Keenan Allen and Mike Williams to McConkey and the band of underwhelming receivers the Chargers had last season was a steep drop-off.

Davante Adams and Olu Fashanu celebrate after a touchdown in the 2nd half

Targeting Davante Adams would give L.A. a tandem to build the passing game around.”

Adams had a strong 2024 season, catching 85 passes for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games. He started the year with the Las Vegas Raiders but was traded to the Jets in October.

Though Adams is 32 years old and not the same dominant player he once was, he has still been very productive, with five straight 1,000-yard seasons.

While Los Angeles may want to consider younger players, Adams, with two years left on his contract, could be worth the risk. For a third-round pick, it could be a move worth making for the Chargers.

Oregon Ducks quarterback commit Jonas Williams visits USC for Junior Day in Los Angeles, sparking speculation about a potential flip

Four-star quarterback recruit Jonas Williams committed to the Oregon Ducks in August, but he recently visited the USC campus and attended their Junior Day event. Several recruits were in Southern California, including five-star wide receiver Chris Henry Jr., who is already committed to Ohio State. USC is hoping to convince several recruits in the 2026 cycle to change their commitments.

Even though the Early National Signing Day is still far off, USC is currently ranked No. 2 for the 2026 recruiting class according to On3’s Industry Rankings. Oregon holds the No. 1 spot. If USC is able to flip Williams from Oregon, they could strengthen their class and take a top recruit away from a rival.

Oregon defensive line commit Tomuhini Topui also visited USC over the weekend. Topui, a four-star recruit from Mater Dei, was joined by some of his teammates as the Trojans continue to work on improving their recruiting class.

What are the chances of Williams flipping? He chose Oregon over offers from Alabama and Ohio State, but USC could still make a strong push. Riley has a great track record of developing quarterbacks who have gone on to success in the NFL. He has also coached multiple Heisman Trophy winners, including quarterback Caleb Williams.

When Williams committed to Oregon, he mentioned his strong relationship with Ducks offensive coordinator Will Stein.

“The most important relationship is the relationship with coach Stein. Our relationship is really good. I’ve gotten to know him a lot and his family, and I fully trust spending the next four years of my life with him,” Williams said.

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning is also known as one of the best recruiting coaches in the country. Will he be able to keep Williams committed to Oregon despite Riley’s efforts?

In the 2025 recruiting cycle, USC had a commitment from quarterback Julian Lewis, but he flipped to Colorado and coach Deion Sanders late in the process. However, USC didn’t leave without a quarterback, as they flipped Husan Longstreet from Texas A&M and signed him as a five-star recruit.

Dan Lanning in the practice

Will Riley and the Trojans flip another quarterback? They hosted Williams during a big recruiting weekend that also included USC commits like four-star cornerbacks Brandon Lockhart and R.J. Sermons.

Steve Wiltfong spoke with Lockhart about the Trojans’ recruiting weekend, and Lockhart seemed excited about what’s coming.

“Today showed a real vision in real time as to what’s currently building and what could be. [If] a few more guys from today’s group decided that SC is the right place for them something extremely special could happen. We’re talking a resurgence of what once was, football dominance. Either way, we’re on that path and today made it even more exciting,” Lockhart told Wiltfong.

USC is working on building its 2026 recruiting class, which is currently ranked just behind Oregon’s.

Oregon’s top-ranked 2026 class features four-star tight end Kendre Harrison, four-star offensive tackle Kodi Greene, four-star running back Tradarian Ball, and Williams.

Insider Reveals Los Angeles Lakers Eyeing Major Moves Before NBA Trade Deadline

The Los Angeles Lakers were actively looking to strengthen their roster before the trade deadline, especially aiming to acquire a center to pair with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. However, those plans changed when an unexpected trade opportunity came up.

According to sources close to the team, the Mavericks approached the Lakers with a trade offer involving Luka Dončić, which was too good to turn down.

But what about the Lakers’ original needs? Even after landing Dončić, the frontcourt is still a concern. As Bill Plaschke of the LA Times pointed out, “The one thing the 6-foot-6 star doesn’t do is play center. The Lakers now need a center. And they have four days to find one.”

Lakers Still Searching for Frontcourt Help

As reported by Jovan Buha from The Athletic, the trade for Dončić is still on the table, but the Lakers’ biggest need now is at center.

“The Lakers’ most glaring hole now is at center. Jaxson Hayes is their starter for the time being, which is a problem,” Buha wrote. “He’s closer to being a fringe rotation center than a starting one. If the Lakers are serious about contending this season, the center need is the starting point.

Ahead of the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline, Los Angeles will explore the market for a center upgrade based on its current assets, though it’s unclear how much draft capital they are willing to include in such a deal, according to team and league sources.”

LeBron James Trade Still a Possibility

Buha also suggests that a trade involving LeBron James can’t be ruled out.

“Now that Davis has been dealt, though, a potential James trade ahead of the deadline can’t be ruled out. He has a no-trade clause, can test free agency this summer, and is also extension-eligible this offseason. The James-to-Golden State murmurs are likely to pick back up this week.”

Even with that, Buha sees room to add more talent to the roster but notes the challenges in making a deal.

“Beyond a center, they could use another 3-and-D wing to replace Christie and bolster lineups around James and Dončić. That’s easier said than done with limited assets to trade.”

Matthew Stafford’s 2025 contract: What’s in store for the Rams in Los Angeles?

The Los Angeles Rams had a solid season, showing that their young defense has the potential to be a standout group for years. The offense proved it could still find ways to win, even if it’s in new and different ways.

Head coach Sean McVay is regarded as one of the best in the NFL, and with him, the Rams always have a chance to compete.

However, the Rams face some tough choices this offseason. Despite wanting to keep the core of the team together, last season could have marked the end of the Super Bowl-winning group from 2022.

The player who will draw the most attention this offseason is veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Stafford is expected to return for the 2025 NFL season, which is good news for both the Rams and Stafford. However, it also means Stafford could potentially be traded to another team next year.

Stafford led the Rams from a 1-4 start to make a strong playoff run, winning the NFC West and a playoff game. They were just one drive away from another NFC Championship appearance. Stafford showed he still has plenty left in his career and remains one of the top quarterbacks in the league.

“Matthew Stafford, announcing he wants to keep playing, what wheels does that set in motion?” said Rich Eisen on The Rich Eisen Show.

Matthew Stafford passes in the 1st half

“What that now takes to is the Rams to say all right, we all know that Stafford is not playing for, I think it is $27 million this year, which is really $23 million because there was a $4 million roster bonus that was guaranteed, which is essentially part of his 2024 salary. But regardless, Matthew Stafford is not a bottom of the starting caliber money type of player,” said NFL Insider Tom Pelissero.

“Last year, there was a contract situation that played out all the way up until training camp with Matthew Stafford. They ended up giving him a raise, and in turn, Matthew Stafford gave up his future guarantees, which made abundantly clear he was really on a year-to-year plan here.”

“The next step is for his agent and the Rams to figure out what a new contract for Matthew Stafford looks like. Is it a multi-year commitment, or is it a one-year commitment? If they can’t come together on a deal, is it possible they could revisit the idea of trading Matthew Stafford?”

Chargers in the mix to sign top free-agent safety in Los Angeles

In his first year as defensive coordinator, Jesse Minter helped the Chargers’ defense make a huge improvement in 2024. In fact, they became the best scoring defense in the regular season.

As expected, the team’s biggest needs this offseason are on the offensive side of the ball. However, Pro Football Focus has a different idea, suggesting the Chargers could make their defense even stronger.

Mason Cameron sees the Chargers as one of the top teams that could sign one of the best free agents this offseason, Jevon Holland, who has spent his first four years with the Dolphins.

The Chargers also face the challenge of replacing some key players in their secondary, as they are set to lose five of their top 10 snap contributors. With Derwin James playing a big role as the main slot defender in 2024, the team may need to add depth to a secondary that could be left thin, with Alohi Gilman being the only other safety under contract.

Holland, who just finished his rookie contract, has proven himself to be one of the top safeties in the league. The Chargers already have Derwin James, who many consider one of the best safeties in the NFL. However, as Cameron points out, James was used in many different roles this past season.

Los Angeles Chargers players celebrate after an interception in the 2nd half

It’s worth noting that back in 2021, the Chargers did meet with Holland before the NFL draft. However, he didn’t make it to the Chargers in the second round, so they selected cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. 11 picks later instead.

Holland and Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert both played together at Oregon. Holland’s performance took a slight dip in 2024, especially in coverage. He didn’t record any interceptions for the first time in his career, had just one forced fumble, and managed four pass deflections.

Like James, Holland is excellent against the run. If he can return to his form from 2022 and 2023, he’s a playmaker all over the field.

Despite his talent, Holland has yet to make a Pro Bowl. However, there’s no doubt he has the skills to make it, and he’s expected to command a large contract. With players like Joey Bosa possibly being cut to save cap space, the Chargers could have enough money to sign him this offseason.

The Texans are bringing in Rams assistant Nick Caley as their new offensive coordinator

The Houston Texans are hiring Los Angeles Rams assistant Nick Caley as their new offensive coordinator, according to a source.

The source requested anonymity because the team has not yet made an official announcement.

Caley worked last season as the passing game coordinator and tight ends coach for the Rams. He takes over for Bobby Slowik, who was fired after two seasons in the role.

At 42, Caley spent the last two years with the Rams and previously worked with the New England Patriots from 2015 to 2022. Before his NFL career, he spent 10 years as an assistant at various college programs.

Caley will now lead an offense under quarterback C.J. Stroud, who had a challenging second season. In 2023, the Texans finished 12th in scoring (22.2 points per game) and 12th in total yards (342.4 yards per game). Stroud, however, was named AP Offensive Rookie of the Year and led the Texans to their first playoff appearance in four years.

Houston beat the Cleveland Browns in the wild-card round, making Stroud, at just 22 years old, the youngest quarterback to win a playoff game.

Houston Texans players celebrate in the 2nd half

In 2023, the Texans finished 19th in scoring (21.9 points per game) and 22nd in yardage (319.7 yards per game). Stroud was sacked 52 times, the second-most in the league behind Bears rookie Caleb Williams’ 68. Stroud’s performance declined, with his interceptions rising from 5 to 12.

Despite these struggles, Houston ended the regular season 10-7 for the second year in a row and won their wild-card playoff game against the Los Angeles Chargers. However, the Kansas City Chiefs, the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, defeated the Texans in the divisional round.

Is Cooper Kupp’s time with the Rams coming to an end in Los Angeles?

Receiver Cooper Kupp has confirmed that the Los Angeles Rams are looking to trade him after spending eight seasons with the team, and he is not happy about it.

The Super Bowl 56 MVP shared the news on social media Monday, saying that the Rams told him they “will be seeking a trade immediately and will be working with me and my family to find the right place to continue competing for championships.”

Kupp, who was named the 2021 AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year, essentially said goodbye to Los Angeles, the city where he has spent his entire career.

“I don’t agree with the decision and always believed it was going to begin and end in LA,” Kupp wrote. “Still, if there’s one thing that I have learned over the years: there are so many things that are out of your control, but it is how you respond to these things that you will look back on and remember.”

Kupp’s future with the Rams had been uncertain for some time. He is under contract for two more years as part of a three-year, $80.1 million extension he signed after a historic 2021 season. He was set to take up nearly $30 million in cap space next season, but the Rams could clear most of that by releasing or trading him with a post-June 1 designation.

“Preparations start now for 2025,” Kupp wrote. “Highly motivated, as healthy as ever, and looking forward to playing elite football for years to come. Love you guys… But coming for it all.”

The Rams considered trading Kupp last October after a rough start to the season, but decided to keep him. Los Angeles has been willing to move on from stars in the past, as General Manager Les Snead traded or released players like Jared Goff, Todd Gurley, and Robert Woods even before their massive contract extensions kicked in.

The Rams did not comment on Kupp’s post.

Kupp has been one of the top receivers in the NFL whenever healthy. The Rams drafted him in the third round from Eastern Washington just after hiring Sean McVay as head coach. Kupp has been a key part of McVay’s offense, recording 634 catches for 7,776 yards and 57 touchdowns.

Cooper Kupp celebrates with Cobly Parkinson after a touchdown

“I have taken so much pride in playing alongside my teammates for the LA community, so thank you for embracing my family and making this such a special place for us,” Kupp wrote.

Kupp led the league in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947), and touchdowns (16) three seasons ago, winning the receiving triple crown. In the playoffs, he capped his dominant stretch by winning Super Bowl MVP and scoring the winning touchdown in Los Angeles’ victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

However, Kupp’s production has slowed in the last three seasons. After missing four games this season due to an ankle injury, he struggled in the final stretch, recording just 12 catches for 162 yards in the last five regular-season games, marking the least productive stretch of his career.

In the playoffs, Kupp had six catches for 90 yards and no touchdowns in two games.

Puka Nacua, a former fifth-round pick, has emerged as a top receiver for the Rams in the past two seasons under Kupp’s guidance. Nacua has averaged 88.4 yards per game, one of the highest averages in NFL history.

“So I thought it was just the NBA trade season,” Nacua wrote on social media.

Nacua will now be the Rams’ primary target in the passing game, along with whoever is the team’s quarterback next season.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford recently said he would take some time to decide whether to return for his 17th NFL season. Stafford has a close relationship with both Kupp and Nacua.

The Rams’ passing game could face major changes, even if Stafford returns. Along with Kupp’s potential departure, the Rams could lose veteran receivers Demarcus Robinson, Tutu Atwell, and Tyler Johnson to free agency. Pass game coordinator Nick Caley also left the team to become the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans.

Kupp will be 32 years old next season. Before his record-breaking 2021 campaign, he had three straight seasons with over 90 catches, but since then, he hasn’t had more than 75 catches or 812 receiving yards in a season.

NFL Trade Rumors: Los Angeles Rams Advised to Trade for Will Levis as Potential Future QB

Rams should consider making another trade, this time for a backup quarterback, in hopes of finding a possible future replacement for Matthew Stafford.

“Quarterback is an underrated need for the Rams that is starting to become more apparent,” report said. “As mentioned before, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Rams move on from Stafford this offseason.

Even if they don’t, it would make sense to target a young quarterback like Will Levis. He’s only had two years with the Titans and has dealt with coaching changes during that time. Sean McVay could be one of the best coaches to help him develop into a starter.”

This idea is common when talking about struggling young quarterbacks—many believe McVay can fix them. Over the past few years, McVay has been linked with players like Sam Darnold, Carson Wentz, and Zach Wilson. While this could be true, the Rams gave Jared Goff to McVay, and things went decently.

Will Levis walks to the sidelines in the 1st half

However, it can be argued that Goff didn’t fully improve until he worked with former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Stafford, on the other hand, was already an established great quarterback before joining the Rams.

Additionally, none of McVay’s hand-picked quarterbacks have become long-term starters in the NFL. McVay has had connections with several quarterbacks over the years, but none have truly broken through.

That said, the Rams will need a reliable quarterback behind their 37-year-old starter. Recently, they have looked into experienced options like Jimmy Garoppolo and Carson Wentz.
