Kyler Murray’s errors in the final moments lead to the Cardinals squandering their lead in a loss to the Vikings

For most of the first three quarters on Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals were in control, largely thanks to strong play from quarterback Kyler Murray.

But the Minnesota Vikings made a comeback, scoring 17 points in their final three possessions to win 23-22. Some of the blame for this collapse falls on Murray.

With the loss, Arizona (6-6) dropped to second place in the NFC West, one game behind Seattle. They will face the Seahawks at home next week.

Murray threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Harrison Jr., putting the Cardinals ahead 19-6 with 4:37 left in the third quarter. At that point, Murray had completed 24 of 32 passes for 206 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions, plus five carries for 40 yards.

Kyler Murray speaks in the news conference

However, the focus shifted to Murray’s performance in the fourth quarter, where he completed 6 of 12 passes for 51 yards and two interceptions, leading to a passer rating of 21.9. After the Vikings matched Harrison’s touchdown with one of their own, the Cardinals tried to run some clock and add more points. Instead, just four plays later, Murray gave the ball back to Minnesota.

In the second play of the fourth quarter, Murray was forced out of the pocket and threw a desperation pass toward the sideline. It was intercepted by Byron Murphy Jr. at the Vikings’ 32-yard line.

“I was trying to throw the ball away, so that’s on me,” said Murray, who had already led four drives that stalled in the red zone during the first three quarters.

Minnesota turned the interception into a field goal, cutting Arizona’s lead to 19-16 with 11:08 remaining.

Murray then led the Cardinals on a 66-yard drive over 16 plays, burning 7:48 off the clock. But after reaching the Minnesota 5-yard line, Murray was called for intentional grounding, part of 10 penalties against the Cardinals totaling 96 yards, which pushed them out of the red zone. Chad Ryland’s fifth field goal of the day gave Arizona a 22-16 lead with 3:20 left to play.

The Vikings responded with a nine-play, 70-yard drive, ending in a touchdown pass from Sam Darnold to Aaron Jones. The extra point gave the Vikings their first lead of the game. They left 1:13 on the clock, giving the Cardinals — with all three timeouts — a chance to drive into field goal range.

However, Murray’s struggles continued in the final minutes. On the second play of the drive, Minnesota’s Jonathan Greenard knocked the ball out of Murray’s hands in the backfield. Murray fell on it, but the play resulted in an 8-yard loss, the Vikings’ first sack of the game. On third-and-13, Murray ran for 3 yards but burned 8 seconds and failed to get out of bounds, as Greenard chased him down.

Jonathan Greenard tackles Kyler Murray in the 2nd half

“It just so happened that he cut back, and I was like, ‘Oh, perfect,’” Greenard said.

On fourth down, Murray tried to throw to Harrison on the right sideline, but Minnesota’s Shaq Griffin intercepted the pass, sealing the win for the Vikings. Last week, Arizona’s four-game winning streak ended in a 16-6 loss to Seattle, where Murray had a pick-6.

“I’m sure he’ll want some plays back, but I thought he made plays with his legs, the touchdown pass, a couple conversions in there,” said coach Jonathan Gannon. “I thought he played well enough to win.”

Matthew Stafford and Kyren Williams lead the Rams to a hard-fought 21-14 win against the Saints

Kyren Williams and the Los Angeles Rams walked into the locker room at halftime confident that their scoreless first half would not reflect the outcome of the game.

“We knew the second half was going to be ours,” said Williams, who ran for a season-high 104 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown, in the Rams’ 21-14 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

“It felt great. It felt like I was me, myself and I when I was out there playing like that,” Williams said. “I was playing instinctive football and had great energy.”

Matthew Stafford threw two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and the Rams (6-6) stayed in the NFC West race while handing interim Saints coach Darren Rizzi his first loss.

“All we could do is get one win this week, and we were able to,” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “There was improvement for our team collectively, and that’s what I want to continue to see.”

The Saints (4-8) reached the Rams’ 10-yard line in the final minutes, but Derek Carr’s pass on fourth-and-3 was deflected by edge rusher Jared Verse and fell incomplete.

Derek Carr throws passes in the 1st half

“I realized the tight end was staying on me,” Verse said, referring to the Saints’ Foster Moreau. “The No. 1 rule on the edge is you can’t be blocked by the tight end — you just can’t. I just walked him back and was able to peel off and affect the throw.”

That allowed the Rams to run out the clock on the Saints and Rizzi, who had won his first two games since taking over after the firing of Dennis Allen.

“We did a lot of things in the game that we set out to do and played the game in a lot of ways that we wanted to, but we didn’t execute in crunch time,” Rizzi said. “We had a chance to win there. We had a guy open in the end zone and we can’t get the ball off. So, unfortunate.”

Stafford passed for 183 yards with no turnovers. His touchdown passes were for 3 yards to Demarcus Robinson and 7 yards to Puca Nacua, the latter putting the Rams up for good with 8:54 left.

“The first half was definitely frustrating, but we knew at the same time, every time we were handing it off we were getting good yards,” Stafford said. “You have to keep playing. Football is a game of ebbs and flows.”

Saints tight end Taysom Hill, who had been key in New Orleans’ previous victory with one of his best games, injured his left knee and had to be carted off after converting a fourth-and-short run late in the fourth quarter.

The 34-year-old Hill, a fan favorite, waved from the cart as the Superdome crowd chanted his name. Rizzi did not provide an update on Hill after the game, stating more tests were needed before the full extent of his injury was known.

Puka Nacua makes a catch in the 2nd half

The Saints slightly outgained the Rams and held the ball for longer but struggled to score. New Orleans had to settle for three field-goal attempts in the first half, with Blake Grupe making two from 54 yards but missing one from 36.

This gave New Orleans a 6-0 halftime lead, before Williams’ 10th touchdown of the season put the Rams ahead 7-6.

“Kyren’s energy was outstanding,” McVay said. “He was excellent in being really decisive. He was putting his foot in the ground, leveling off well and doing a great job on slash running to the second and third levels.”

Saints running back Alvin Kamara rushed for 112 yards on 23 carries.

New Orleans’ only touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Carr threw a 28-yard pass to Marquez Valdes-Scantling, his fourth touchdown reception in four games since being signed midseason. Dante Pettis caught Carr’s pass in tight coverage in the right corner of the end zone for a 2-point conversion, tying the game at 14.

Philadelphia’s defense and missed kicks by Tucker lead the Eagles to a 24-19 victory over the Ravens in their matchup

The matchup between Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry was never meant to be a direct competition.

“It ain’t basketball. It ain’t like I go out there and tackle Derrick Henry,” Barkley said. “To be honest, I don’t know if I really want to tackle Derrick Henry.”

Luckily for Barkley, the Philadelphia Eagles have a whole team of defensive players focused on stopping Henry, and they did a good job of that on Sunday. They also contained Lamar Jackson in their 24-19 win over the Baltimore Ravens, which marked the Eagles’ eighth consecutive victory.

The much-anticipated running back battle between Barkley and Henry didn’t meet expectations. Barkley ended the game with 107 rushing yards, including a 25-yard touchdown with 7:56 left in the fourth quarter. Henry finished with 82 rushing yards and three catches for 29 yards.

Lamar Jackson throws in the 1st half

Although Barkley may have edged ahead of Jackson in the MVP race, the Eagles’ defense stole the show. Coach Nick Sirianni’s response when asked how he felt his team matched Baltimore’s physicality showed the Eagles’ mentality:

“They had to match ours,” Sirianni said. “That was our message going in — that they got to match our physicality. Again, that’s a very physical team, that’s a well-coached team, that’s a team with a lot of good players. But yeah, I’d like that question rephrased a little bit.”

Justin Tucker’s struggles continued for Baltimore. The star kicker missed two field goals and an extra point, contributing to the Ravens’ loss. As a result, Baltimore (8-5) fell 1 1/2 games behind first-place Pittsburgh in the AFC North. The Eagles (10-2) recovered from an early 9-0 deficit with two touchdowns in the second quarter. Tucker made a 50-yard kick just before halftime, but the Ravens didn’t score again until the game’s final seconds.

“Couldn’t get any rhythm going,” said coach John Harbaugh. “In the second half, we really couldn’t finish.”

With the Ravens trailing 14-12, they had possession for most of the third quarter but couldn’t capitalize. Tucker missed field goals from 47 and 53 yards.

“We’re just going to rally around him,” said Baltimore safety Ar’Darius Washington. “We know he’s a great kicker. He’s probably the greatest of all time. Whatever he’s going through, we’re going to be there for him. He’s our guy.”

Barkley’s touchdown put the Eagles ahead 21-12, and a field goal extended the lead to 12. Jackson threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Likely with 3 seconds left, but it wasn’t enough.

Baltimore Ravens players in the 1st half

Jackson fell to 23-2 against the NFC as a starter, throwing for 237 yards and rushing for 79.

“The front just kept at it, that’s it. We didn’t keep a spy on him, we didn’t do anything extra,” said Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean.

This game featured the Ravens’ top-ranked offense against the Eagles’ number-one ranked defense. The Ravens took an early lead, helped by six Eagles penalties in the first quarter. Jackson threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Mark Andrews to make it 9-0.

However, the second quarter was dominated by the Eagles. Jalen Hurts threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Goedert and later scored on a 1-yard run, although he appeared to mishandle the snap before securing the ball and pushing it across the goal line.

McLaughlin’s overtime field goal lifts the Bucs to a 26-23 victory over the Panthers

Baker Mayfield was scared he had torn his Achilles tendon when Jadeveon Clowney stepped on the back of his right ankle in the third quarter. For a moment, he thought his season might be over.

Fortunately for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it turned out to be less serious. Mayfield returned to the game after missing only two plays, leading four more scoring drives. The Bucs won 26-23 in overtime against the Carolina Panthers, thanks to a 30-yard field goal from Chase McLaughlin. With the win, the Buccaneers moved into a tie for first place in the NFC South.

“Honestly, it scared the daylights out of me,” Mayfield said. “I’ve seen some people pop their Achilles before and they say it feels like you get cleated in the back. Obviously not knowing what had happened, I thought that’s what I did. It was a little painful, but I got taped up again and went back out there.”

Bucky Irving ran for a career-high 152 yards and a touchdown for the Bucs (6-6), who are now tied with Atlanta at the top of the division. Mayfield finished the game 21 of 33 for 235 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Carolina Panthers players celebrate after scoring in the 1st half

He improved to 4-0 against the Panthers, the team that cut him in 2022. Mike Evans had five catches for 118 yards, including a one-handed grab for a 1-yard touchdown catch.

“Mike’s a grown man,” Mayfield said. “I don’t know how he caught that ball. He’s proven time and time again for 11 years that he can do it.”

In overtime, the Panthers, led by Bryce Young, were moving into position for a game-winning score. Adam Thielen made a one-handed grab to get into Tampa Bay territory. However, on the next play, Chuba Hubbard fumbled, and Mayfield took over.

Mayfield connected with Evans for 21 yards, and then Rashaad White ran for 38 yards to the Carolina 10-yard line, setting up McLaughlin’s fourth field goal of the game.

“The football gods were kind to us,” Bucs coach Todd Bowles said. “The first half of the season, we wouldn’t have finished that one out. We did a heck of a job fighting back all game. It was a tough game. They played tough. We played tough. We made mistakes in the first half of the season and, this game, we pulled it out. We learned some mental toughness.”

The loss guaranteed the Panthers (3-9) their seventh straight losing season. A disappointed Hubbard sat on the Carolina bench for several minutes after the game while his teammates headed to the locker room.

“I hold myself to a high standard and we are trying to change things around here and that’s not helping with anything,” Hubbard said. “So I’ve got to be better and all I can do is just work. It happened and I have to grow from it.”

Young was 26 of 46 passing for 298 yards. He led a 60-yard drive, ending with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Thielen, which gave the Panthers a 23-20 lead with 30 seconds left in regulation. The stadium was buzzing with excitement.

Bryce Young passes in the 1st half

However, in overtime, Young didn’t attempt to jump on Hubbard’s fumble, which was a mistake similar to a costly decision by Cam Newton in the Panthers’ Super Bowl 50 loss to the Denver Broncos.

“It was a reaction,” Young said, offering no further explanation.

Panthers coach Dave Canales said he’s happy with Young’s progress but noted the team’s mistakes in the loss.

“We have to put together a full complement of quarters, a full four quarters to become the team that we want to become,” Canales said.

Justin Tucker’s struggles persist as the Ravens fall 24-19 to the Eagles

The most accurate kicker in NFL history is currently going through an unexpected slump.

Justin Tucker missed several kicks in the Baltimore Ravens’ 24-19 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Before the game, Tucker had made 89.4% of his field goals, the highest percentage by any NFL kicker who has attempted at least 150 field goals.

He made kicks from 34 and 50 yards against the Eagles but missed a 47-yard attempt to the left and a 53-yard attempt to the right. Both missed kicks came in the third quarter while the Ravens were trailing 14-12. Earlier, Tucker hit an extra point that bounced off the upright after the Ravens had jumped to a 9-0 lead.

“As simply as I can put it, I missed the kicks, and I’ll leave it at that,” Tucker said. “I just left the points out there. I feel like I cost us this one, but it doesn’t really do anybody any good to dwell on it. The only thing that we can do — that I can do — is just continue to work, move forward, take it one kick at a time.”

Justin Tucker misses a field goal in the 2nd half

Ravens coach John Harbaugh couldn’t understand why a kicker who had been so reliable inside 60 yards suddenly missed easier kicks.

“We’ll go back and look at all that stuff and try to do the best we can to try to figure it out,” Harbaugh said. “He’s definitely capable of making every kick. We need him to make those kicks, and nobody wants to make them more than Justin, I promise you that.”

The Ravens (8-5) are on a bye next week, and there are no plans to hold a tryout for kickers.

“If you’re asking me if we’re going to move on from Justin Tucker, I’m not really planning on doing that right now. I don’t think that would be wise,” Harbaugh said. “He’ll be the first to tell you he has to make as many kicks as he can. And if you look at Justin Tucker’s history, I would say he’s capable of doing that.”

Since joining the NFL in 2012, Tucker has made 62 field goals from 50 yards or more, including an NFL record 66-yard kick in Detroit in 2021. Before Sunday’s game, Tucker had a 93.6% success rate in the second half and overtime, the best in NFL history for kickers with at least 100 attempts.

But against the Eagles, his two missed kicks in the second half put the Ravens in a tough position. Just two weeks earlier, Tucker missed two field goals in an 18-16 loss to division rival Pittsburgh, forcing the Ravens to attempt a failed 2-point conversion with 1:06 left.

Justin Tucker watches his kick in the 2nd half

Tucker, a player known for his 20 career game-winning kicks, found himself discussing his missed attempts.

“I hate that I’ve had to have this same conversation over the course of this season,” Tucker said. “But that’s something that comes with the territory in this job description. The kicks are either good or they’re not, and today, I did not do a good enough job to help our team win the football game.”

His teammates can’t believe that Tucker, who has been so reliable, is suddenly struggling.

“I said this to some of the guys on the sideline: I think this is normal for kickers, but we’ve been so blessed by Tucker’s eliteness that we kind of take it for granted,” cornerback Marlon Humphrey said. “We used to sit there when he gets out there and know it’s going in. But I think great players, they get out of those slumps at the right moment. And I think Tucker’s one of those guys.”

Josh Allen scores touchdowns through passing, rushing, and receiving as the Bills dominate the 49ers 35-10 in a snowy game

Josh Allen’s eventful week started with singer and actress Hailee Steinfeld saying “Yes” to his marriage proposal and ended with the Buffalo Bills quarterback celebrating his three-touchdown performance in a 35-10 win over San Francisco by making snow angels with coach Sean McDermott on Sunday night.

“He’s the one that got me to do it,” Allen said about interrupting McDermott’s TV interview to lay back into a snow pile. “I’m not the biggest snow angel fan, because you get cold down there, my toes are freezing right now … but it was fun.”

Regarding Steinfeld’s “Yes” during his bye week proposal, Allen shared, “Felt good. Felt free.”

He could have also been referring to his performance in the freezing temperatures and heavy snow, where he became the NFL’s first quarterback and seventh player in the Super Bowl era to score a touchdown passing, rushing, and receiving. Between his 7-yard touchdown pass to Mack Hollins and his 8-yard scoring run, Allen also caught a touchdown on a pass he threw in his latest all-around performance.

With Amari Cooper making a one-handed catch on a short pass while being tackled by two Niners defenders, he pitched the ball back to Allen. The quarterback ran to the left corner of the end zone and dove past the pylon for the touchdown.

Brock Purdy passes in the 2nd half

“It’s got to be up there. I wish he got credited for something there, an assist or a passing touchdown,” Allen said about Cooper. “I just kind of chased the ball to be there and we made eye contact. … It was dope.”

Cooper said he acted on instinct during a play that could have been drawn up in the snow on the sideline.

“I was wondering what he was doing over there,” Cooper said. “I figured he was over there because he wanted the ball, so I gave it to him.”

Snow flew through the air like confetti from the excited crowd as the Bills (10-2) scored on four of five possessions, extending a 28-3 lead starting with Ray Davis’ 5-yard run. James Cook added a career-high 65-yard run and finished with 107 yards rushing.

The defending NFC champion 49ers (5-7) fell apart, losing their third straight game and also losing running back Christian McCaffrey to a potential season-ending injury to his posterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

Coach Kyle Shanahan believes McCaffrey got hurt on an 18-yard run up the middle. The All-Pro running back stayed in the game but then seemed to step awkwardly with his left foot on the snowy field, falling immediately. After being checked on the sideline, McCaffrey limped to the locker room and was ruled out for the second half. He had 53 yards on seven carries before leaving the game, after missing the first eight games of the season with Achilles tendinitis.

“It feels dark and gloomy and absolutely depressing, honestly I’ll feel that probably in a couple hours,” tight end George Kittle said. “The only way to make this feel better is to go take advantage of next week and try to get a win.”

The 49ers had a tough game, losing three fumbles and kicker Jake Moody missing two of three field-goal attempts. San Francisco was also missing five starters due to injury, and now their playoff chances are at risk after losing the Super Bowl to Kansas City last season.

Moody started the scoring with a 33-yard field goal, and Isaac Guerendo added a 15-yard run for a touchdown. Brock Purdy, back after missing a game due to a sore shoulder, finished 11 of 18 for 94 yards.

Jordan Mason runs against Damar Hamlin in the 2nd half

Allen completed 13 of 17 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns, rushed three times for 18 yards and a score, and caught one pass for 7 yards and a touchdown. He was cheered by fans chanting “MVP!” and sat out most of the fourth quarter.

“It’s a good feeling. This one feels a little bit different this early in the season,” Allen said about clinching the division while still being in the hunt for the AFC’s top seed, currently held by Kansas City (11-1). “It’s going to be fun, I mean, to go out there and play free and play relaxed and play loose. I think that could be a dangerous team.”

Allen now has 247 career touchdowns (186 passing, 59 rushing, and 2 receiving), breaking Hall of Famer Jim Kelly’s franchise record of 244.

Buffalo has won seven straight games since losing to Baltimore and Houston, and they are now 10-2 or better for the fifth time in team history and the first since 1991. The Bills became the NFL’s eighth team to clinch a division title with five games remaining, the first since Indianapolis in 2009.

Buffalo extended its streak of scoring 30 or more points to six straight games, while the 49ers fell to 0-5 when scoring 20 points or fewer.

Roy Keane to Return as Sky Sports Pundit at Anfield Amid Ipswich Fan Controversy

Roy Keane is expected to appear as a pundit for Sky Sports at Anfield on Sunday, despite a recent controversy involving Ipswich fans. The former Manchester United captain was involved in a heated exchange with supporters at Portman Road, where he responded to persistent taunts and even invited one fan to meet him in the car park. The incident prompted an investigation by Sky Sports, which included interviews with Keane and other on-site personnel, such as Kelly Cates, Jamie Redknapp, and Izzy Christiansen.

Sky Sports has not disclosed the outcome of their investigation but reportedly sympathized with Keane, acknowledging claims that some fans had crossed the line with their behavior. This is not the first time Keane has faced confrontational incidents while working as a pundit; last season, he was headbutted by a fan at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. Speaking on a podcast, Keane expressed his dismay over such encounters, indicating that he does not enjoy this aspect of his role.

Roy Keane
Roy Keane

Amid concerns about Keane’s continued involvement in punditry, especially as he has hinted at stepping away within a year, his participation in Sunday’s Super Sunday lineup has been confirmed, barring any last-minute changes. Keane is contracted to appear in around 20 broadcasts per season, making his ongoing presence significant for Sky Sports’ coverage.

Sky Sports has stated it will not increase security for the Anfield event following the Ipswich altercation. However, as with all high-profile matches, a standard risk assessment will be conducted, and bodyguards will be available to ensure the safety of pundits. This approach aligns with their usual protocol for significant Premier League clashes.

Keane will share the stage with other prominent figures, including former Manchester United teammate Gary Neville, ex-Liverpool players Jamie Carragher and Daniel Sturridge, and former Manchester City defender Micah Richards. This lineup underscores the importance of Sunday’s Premier League fixture and Sky’s commitment to delivering high-quality analysis.

Tyreek Hill’s Traffic Incident and Legal Outcome Spark Debate Over Police Actions and Personal Growth

In September 2023, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill received two traffic citations—one for careless driving and the other for failure to wear a seatbelt—after being pulled over by Miami-Dade police officer Manuel Batista outside Hard Rock Stadium. The incident escalated when Officer Danny Torres was filmed dragging Hill out of his vehicle and placing him in handcuffs, a moment captured by body cameras. This incident went viral, leading to an internal affairs investigation into Torres’ actions, though no findings have been released so far.

Hill’s legal team, consisting of attorneys Devon Jacob, Stephen Kelly, Jeffrey Neiman, and Julius Collins, issued a statement following the dismissal of the citations, which occurred when the officers failed to appear at a court hearing. The lawyers argued that the officers’ absence from court demonstrated their awareness of wrongdoing, as they could not be questioned under oath. The attorneys expressed that the officers should face disciplinary actions for their failure to attend the hearing, as Hill had the right to a fair court appearance.

The Miami-Dade Police Department described the officers’ failure to appear as an “oversight” and stated that the matter would be handled administratively. However, the department insisted that the citations given to Hill had merit, despite the dismissal. Hill, on his part, took to social media, questioning the absence of online commentators who had criticized his actions during the incident. He also remarked that he could have handled the traffic stop better, although he harbored no ill feelings toward the police.

The incident occurred on the same day the Dolphins were preparing for their season opener, and teammates Jonnu Smith and Calais Campbell arrived on the scene in an attempt to calm the situation. Smith was cited, and Campbell was briefly detained but released without citation. The altercation, along with Hill’s controversial actions, added to his already growing list of off-field incidents, which included a physical confrontation with a marina employee and a lawsuit involving a social media influencer earlier in the year.

Since joining the Dolphins in 2022, Hill has been involved in various off-field controversies, but he has expressed personal growth and maturity. In the aftermath of this incident, Hill reflected on his maturation, emphasizing his newfound focus on family life and his role as a father and husband. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel supported Hill’s personal development, noting that Hill had become “a different human being” since their first meeting. Hill himself acknowledged that as he ages, he has become more responsible and committed to being a positive role model for his family.

Uncertainty Surrounds Aaron Rodgers’ Future with Jets as Leadership Changes and 2025 Decision Approach

The Aaron Rodgers era in New York is nearing its end, with the future Hall of Fame quarterback considered a “long shot” to return to the Jets in 2025. After two seasons with the team, Rodgers has one year left on his contract, but there is no guaranteed money remaining. Additionally, he is due a $35 million option bonus if the Jets decide to bring him back. The uncertainty surrounding the team’s leadership could lead to a parting of ways between Rodgers and the Jets.

Rodgers’ exit would mark the conclusion of the leadership trio that started the 2024 season, following the firing of head coach Robert Saleh on October 5 and general manager Joe Douglas on November 19. The Jets are currently searching for a new GM and head coach, with team owner Woody Johnson overseeing the hiring process. Former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, along with other NFL figures, are assisting in vetting candidates and coordinating interviews, though Rodgers’ role in these decisions remains unclear.

Aaron Rodgers
Aaron Rodgers (NFL)

Rodgers’ performance has been under scrutiny this season. After recovering from a torn Achilles, he has posted 2,442 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions, with a completion rate of 63.4%. However, his performance has been inconsistent, with injuries and a lack of mobility affecting his ability to perform at his usual level. Despite the team’s disappointing 3-8 record, interim coach Jeff Ulbrich confirmed that there are no plans to shut Rodgers down for the rest of the season.

The Jets’ leadership change has created further uncertainty about Rodgers’ future with the team. NFL insider Ian Rapoport recently reported that the quarterback will need to significantly improve his play in the final stretch of the season to secure a place with the Jets beyond 2024. The team is likely to make decisions regarding Rodgers after the year, once the new power structure is in place.

Rodgers himself has expressed uncertainty about his future but has stated that, if he were to continue playing in 2025, New York would be his preferred destination. He emphasized his open-minded approach, saying, “I think at this point I’m open to everything and attached to nothing,” indicating a willingness to explore all options while remaining attached to the Jets as his first choice.

Cowboys Break 334-Day Home Losing Streak with Thanksgiving Victory Over Struggling Giants

The Dallas Cowboys managed to secure a 27-20 victory over the New York Giants on Thanksgiving Day, marking their first home win in 334 days. This win came as a relief for the Cowboys, who had been struggling at home, having lost six straight games at AT&T Stadium, including the playoffs. Their performance on Thanksgiving kept their slim playoff hopes alive, as they improved to 5-7, with upcoming games against lower-ranked teams like the Cincinnati Bengals and Carolina Panthers offering a potential path to a better record.

The game’s turning point came in the second quarter when linebacker DeMarvion Overshown made a pivotal play. After the Cowboys had just pulled within a point of the Giants, Overshown intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown, giving Dallas the lead. This defensive spark set the tone for the rest of the game, as the Giants struggled to get into the end zone, not scoring again until late in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys’ defense, inspired by Overshown’s play, held strong throughout the game.

Cowboys Break 334-Day Home Losing Streak with Thanksgiving Victory Over Struggling Giants

Offensively, the Cowboys showed improvement in their running game, especially after naming Rico Dowdle the primary back. Dowdle rushed for over 100 yards, the first Cowboys player to do so in 26 games, and added his first touchdown of the season. This was a significant achievement, considering the team was missing key offensive linemen for most of the game. Despite a rough first half by CeeDee Lamb, who dropped several passes, the Cowboys managed to keep control of the game. Lamb’s drops were a notable surprise, as he had been consistent throughout the season, but his performance in the second half helped seal the win.

For the New York Giants, the season continued its downward spiral, as they fell to 2-10 after a seventh straight loss. Their offense struggled yet again, with Drew Lock starting as quarterback in his first game for the Giants. Lock’s performance was underwhelming—he threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown, was sacked six times, and absorbed 13 hits. The Giants’ offensive line, made up of backup tackles, did little to protect him, and Lock’s efforts were largely ineffective. The Giants’ defense also failed to make significant stops, as they missed numerous tackles, which contributed to their inability to compete.

The Giants briefly led 7-3 in the first quarter, but their lead was short-lived as the Cowboys quickly regained control. It was the first time since early October that the Giants had held a lead in a game, but they were unable to capitalize on it. With injuries mounting, including a significant injury to defensive star Dexter Lawrence, the Giants’ future looks bleak.

The team faces a tough road ahead, with questions surrounding the leadership of head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen, especially given the team’s poor performance despite earlier assurances of their job security. The Giants will next face the New Orleans Saints, and there is hope that quarterback Tommy DeVito, who is recovering from an injury, might return to start.

Lions Seek to End Thanksgiving Losing Streak and Give Fans a Holiday Victory Against Bears

The Detroit Lions have built a tradition of playing on Thanksgiving Day, but it has become a source of disappointment for their fans. Since their last win on the holiday in 2016 against the Minnesota Vikings, the Lions have suffered seven straight losses on Thanksgiving. This year, however, they are hoping to turn things around, with a matchup against the Chicago Bears offering a prime opportunity to break the losing streak.

For quarterback Jared Goff, ending the Thanksgiving losing skid is personal. He explained that while every game holds its own motivation, the chance to secure a victory on Thanksgiving carries added significance. Goff emphasized how important it is to win not just for the team but for the fans who show unwavering support, attending the game every year despite the team’s struggles. The Lions’ fanbase remains a central source of motivation for the team.

Goff also shared how a loss on Thanksgiving affects him on a personal level, particularly during family gatherings. Having played in three Thanksgiving games as the Lions’ quarterback, he admitted that losing creates a negative atmosphere, making it difficult to enjoy the holiday with his loved ones. Goff expressed his desire to experience a Thanksgiving where he can celebrate the win with his family, highlighting the emotional stakes of the game.

Wide receiver Jameson Williams, who has not yet tasted victory on Thanksgiving, is also feeling the pressure to break the streak. Williams missed his first Thanksgiving game due to injury, and in his second opportunity last year, the Lions lost to the Green Bay Packers. He spoke about the importance of winning this year, not only for his own satisfaction but also for the city of Detroit, hoping to bring back the pride of past Thanksgiving wins.

Coach Dan Campbell shares the team’s eagerness to secure a victory, emphasizing the significance of the divisional matchup against the Bears. He explained that winning would not only boost the team’s morale but also make the holiday more enjoyable for everyone, especially when spending time with family and friends. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown acknowledged the losing streak but also framed the Thanksgiving game as just another important matchup. Despite treating it like any other game, the Lions are determined to end their holiday losing run and give their fans something to celebrate.

Bears Part Ways with Matt Eberflus Following Loss to Lions and Ongoing Struggles

The Chicago Bears fired head coach Matt Eberflus on Friday, a day after a 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions. The game ended with the Bears unable to complete a comeback due to poor clock management. Bears general manager Ryan Poles and chairman George H. McCaskey made the decision to part ways with Eberflus, stating that they wanted to take the team in a “different direction.” Poles expressed gratitude for Eberflus’ hard work and professionalism but emphasized the need for a change in leadership. Eberflus’ firing marks the first time in the team’s history that a head coach has been dismissed mid-season.

Eberflus’ dismissal came amid a six-game losing streak for the Bears, which included a series of heartbreaking last-second defeats. In Week 8, the Bears lost to the Washington Commanders after a tipped Hail Mary pass and a defensive misstep by cornerback Tyrique Stevenson. They also suffered a narrow loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 11 due to a blocked field goal, and an overtime defeat to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 12. The final blow was the loss to the Lions, where Eberflus failed to manage the clock properly in the final moments, resulting in the Bears’ comeback attempt falling short.

As the Bears look for a new head coach, interim offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will step into the role of interim head coach. Brown, who took over the offensive play-calling duties three weeks ago, will continue in this capacity as the team prepares for its next game against the San Francisco 49ers. Brown’s appointment aims to provide stability for rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, whose development has been a bright spot for the Bears during the season. Williams has thrown five touchdowns and no interceptions in the last two weeks under Brown’s play-calling.

Eberflus’ handling of the clock at the end of the Lions game was a key point in his dismissal. Despite trailing by three points with 32 seconds left, Eberflus chose not to call a timeout after a sack, allowing the clock to run down. His decision to conserve the timeout for a potential game-tying field goal rather than a final play for the end zone was criticized. Eberflus defended the strategy, but the lack of execution highlighted the mismanagement that had plagued the Bears throughout the season, contributing to his firing.

In his nearly three seasons as head coach, Eberflus posted a 14-32 record, with a .304 win percentage, the third worst in franchise history. His tenure was marked by a lack of success in one-score games, with a 5-19 record that is the worst in NFL history among coaches with at least 20 such games. Despite retaining Eberflus after a 10-24 start to his tenure, the Bears ultimately decided that the team needed a fresh start. Eberflus’ time with the Bears was also marked by significant staff turnover, with eight coaches fired during his short stint, including multiple offensive coordinators.

Eberflus was hired by the Bears in January 2022 after a successful run as the defensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts. While his defenses in Indianapolis had been among the NFL’s top 10, his time with the Bears was mixed. Although the Bears’ defense showed promise in 2023, ranking first in run defense and among the top in interceptions, the unit regressed significantly during the 2024 losing streak. The Bears’ defense ranks near the bottom in several categories this season, including rushing yards allowed and explosive plays. The new head coach will be tasked with improving both the team’s defense and overall performance as the Bears continue to search for sustained success.
