Orlando Magic Look to Capitalize on Home Stretch to Boost Playoff Hopes

The Orlando Magic are entering a pivotal stretch in their season, playing 10 of their next 11 games at home between February 8 and March 6. With a current record of 25-28, they sit in eighth place in the Eastern Conference and need a turnaround to solidify their playoff chances.

Importantly, nine of these 11 matchups are against teams with losing records, presenting an opportunity for Orlando to regain momentum. Head coach Jamahl Mosley emphasized the significance of this period, noting the energy and support of home fans as a potential catalyst for improved performance.

Magic Aim to Regain Momentum and Overcome Struggles in Crucial Home Stretch

The Magic have endured a tough stretch recently, starting with a double-overtime loss to Miami on January 27 and losing four of five games on their West Coast trip. Injuries have also plagued the team, with Franz Wagner missing time due to a torn right oblique. Since his absence on December 6, Orlando has struggled with a 9-20 record, including 14 losses in their last 19 games. With key players returning, the team sees this home-heavy schedule as a chance to regroup and push for a better playoff position.

Several players have highlighted the importance of building momentum at this stage of the season. Forward Jonathan Isaac stressed that these upcoming home games are vital after their disappointing road trip.

Second-year guard Anthony Black echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how playing under the same roof consistently can help establish rhythm and stability. With the All-Star break approaching, Orlando hopes to use this stretch to gain traction and carry positive momentum into the final weeks of the regular season.

Magic Eye Playoff Push with Key Games and Home-Court Advantage Ahead

Despite their recent struggles, the Magic remain in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race. If the playoffs started today, Orlando would face Miami in the 7-8 Play-In tournament game, with a chance to take on No. 2 seed Boston in the first round.

However, with time left in the season, the Magic can still climb into the top six and avoid the Play-In tournament altogether. They hold key tiebreakers over Detroit and have remaining matchups against Indiana, Boston, Chicago, and Atlanta that could impact their seeding.

Last season, Orlando finished strong, going 17-10 after the All-Star break and securing the fifth seed with a crucial win on the final day. Mosley believes the key to a similar finish lies in embracing each moment, refining their style of play, and fostering team chemistry. With the advantage of playing at home, the team can benefit from familiar routines, crowd energy, and continuity. If they can maximize this stretch, the Magic have a chance to turn their season around and solidify their playoff hopes.

Tristan da Silva set for important role as injury-hit Magic face off against the Jazz in Orlando

The Orlando Magic will be missing several key players when they face the Utah Jazz on Sunday, creating a big chance for rookie Tristan da Silva.

Da Silva, 23, impressed in Orlando’s 106-97 win over the Toronto Raptors on Friday, scoring a career-high 25 points and going 5-for-7 from 3-point range. The Magic will be hoping for another strong performance from him against Utah, which recently ended a five-game losing streak with a 136-100 win over the Miami Heat.

Da Silva, who was picked 18th overall in the NBA draft last June, is averaging 9.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 32 games, with 25 starts.

Magic coach Jamahl Mosley praised Da Silva’s work ethic, saying, “He’s definitely not getting enough recognition as a rookie. But he’s doing it just because he’s playing the right way…He’s willing to take on all challenges and is going to continue to improve as this team goes.”

The Magic’s injury list grew longer when Jalen Suggs sustained a lower back strain during the game against the Raptors. Cole Anthony stepped up, starting the second half in place of Suggs and finishing with nine points and a career-high 11 assists.

Suggs will miss the game against Utah, and Gary Harris will sit out his second straight game with a left hamstring strain. Anthony Black, who has missed the last three games due to a low-back injury, is listed as questionable.

Utah Jazz (NBA)

Despite having the lowest 3-point shooting percentage in the NBA (31.0%), Orlando made a season-high 19 3-pointers in the victory and will look to keep that success going against Utah.

The Jazz are coming off their biggest win of the season, leading Miami by as many as 43 points. Brice Sensabaugh, in his second year, led the Jazz with a career-high 34 points, shooting 12-of-18 from the field and 7-of-11 from beyond the arc.

Jazz coach Will Hardy praised Sensabaugh’s work ethic: “He’s continued to work on his game…There are moments where his talent really shines through. Brice is a really, really good young player.”

Sensabaugh, a Florida native, will return home for the game. He attended Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando and was named Florida Mr. Basketball in 2021-22.

Utah also got a boost from John Collins, who returned after missing five games with a hip injury. He scored 24 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and added three blocks. Additionally, Walker Kessler had 14 points and 16 rebounds in the win over Miami.

Orlando Magic rookie shines in standout season, making a lasting impact

The Orlando Magic have struggled with injuries this season, and point guard Jalen Suggs had to leave Sunday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets in the second quarter due to a wrist sprain.

The team had difficulty scoring for the first three quarters of the game but made a strong comeback in the fourth, scoring 34 points to overcome a 17-point deficit with seven minutes left.

Magic rookie Tristan da Silva has been a positive factor for the team, and his performance against the Nets was his best of the season. He scored 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, making key plays when it mattered most.

With the team dealing with injuries, da Silva stepped up, hitting timely shots in the final moments of the game. His decision-making has been sharp, and he was trusted as the primary ball handler toward the end of the game.

The 6-foot-8 forward has shown great versatility on both ends of the floor, which was one of his strengths when he came out of Colorado. With a bigger role due to injuries, da Silva has proven to be more than just a 3-and-D player at the NBA level.

His on-ball skills are impressive for someone of his size, and his basketball IQ is evident in every game.

Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers

He’s also become more comfortable in the pick-and-roll, recording seven assists against the Nets with added playmaking duties. Da Silva has a natural feel for the game, something that is hard to teach, and this will help him develop quickly as he gains more experience.

At 23, da Silva is an older rookie, but he has used his age to his advantage, showing more maturity than many rookies. This is especially clear on the defensive end, where he has been consistently solid.

While he doesn’t make flashy plays or rack up big defensive numbers, da Silva uses his length to contest shots and play vertically. On the final play of the game, he was switched onto Brooklyn’s top scorer, Cam Thomas, and forced him to miss a shot as the buzzer sounded.

After a tough game against the Knicks, where he went scoreless in 28 minutes, da Silva bounced back strongly. He has scored over 15 points in five of his last seven games and set a career-high against the Nets. The rookie has continued to show that he’s one of the more polished players from his draft class and still has room to grow as a playmaker.

The Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic are both aiming to build crucial momentum in Toronto

The Toronto Raptors are looking to win back-to-back games for only the third time this season when they face the Orlando Magic on Friday night.

Immanuel Quickley returned after missing 22 games due to an elbow injury, and the Raptors ended an 11-game losing streak with a 130-113 home win over the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday. Quickley scored 21 points and had 15 assists, while Scottie Barnes added 33 points and 13 rebounds.

Orlando, on the other hand, has lost three of its last four games, including a 105-96 defeat to the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday.

The Raptors had won consecutive games on Nov. 18 and 21 to end a seven-game losing streak. They also won back-to-back games on Dec. 1 and 3 before starting their 11-game slide. All four of their wins during these streaks have been at home.

In their most recent victory, the Raptors shot a season-high 59.1 percent (52-for-88) from the field and 50 percent (16-for-32) from beyond the arc. They also scored a season-best 33 fastbreak points, compared to 21 for Brooklyn.

Quickley made an immediate impact after returning.

“He’s got a lot of skills but he’s a point guard,” Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic said. “When he’s bringing the ball up the floor, he is calling plays on the run, recognizing situations. … He’s doing a really good job and he’s my extension on the floor when he plays out there.”

Barnes added, “The intensity that he brought to the floor on both ends of the floor, it was great. Something that we really missed, and we needed. His playmaking ability, his ability just to get to the paint, his shooting, all that we needed it, his leadership. He was unbelievable, talking throughout the entire game. So, you know, we really missed it.”

Orlando Magic (NBA)

The Raptors are in the middle of a three-game homestand. They have a 7-11 record at home and are just 1-15 on the road.

The Magic are wrapping up a two-game trip, with a 7-11 road record.

On Wednesday, Orlando fell behind Detroit by 18 points but made a strong comeback, outscoring Detroit 26-19 in the third quarter. The Magic closed the gap to 93-90 with 6:26 left, but couldn’t keep the momentum going.

“They picked their pace back up,” said Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who scored 21 points. “They were aggressive the whole game.”

Caldwell-Pope, who averages 9.1 points per game, struggled against Brooklyn on Sunday, scoring only five points on 2-for-10 shooting. However, he bounced back with an efficient 8-for-11 performance against Detroit, including 4-for-6 from three-point range.

“Just being aggressive,” Caldwell-Pope said. “It’s 2025. I told myself just be a little bit more aggressive on the court, shoot the ball when I’m open, try not to pass up as many shots as I have been doing and just continue to be me and get better.”

Jalen Suggs led Orlando with 24 points in Detroit, while Wendell Carter Jr. contributed 15 points. Suggs missed the second half of the Magic’s 102-101 win over the Nets due to a sprained right wrist.

“At this point, everything hurts,” Suggs said. “But it’s part of the journey of an NBA season. So, I’ll get some work done, take care of it with the medical staff, get ready to play in Toronto. It’s all you can do, really.”

Orlando’s Paolo Banchero, who has played in just five games due to an abdominal injury, has been doing some light contact work during practice but remains out, as does Franz Wagner (oblique).

This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season. Last year, Orlando won all three matchups against Toronto.

Pistons guard Jaden Ivey undergoes surgery in Detroit after breaking his leg in a collision with the Magic

Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey underwent surgery on his left leg, one day after breaking his fibula in a collision during a win over the Orlando Magic.

The Pistons announced on Thursday that Ivey will be re-evaluated in four weeks.

“I promise to come back even better,” Ivey wrote in a social media post. “The recovery starts now #DetroitBasketball.”

Detroit selected Ivey with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2022 draft, and the former Purdue standout was having a breakout season. He was averaging 17.6 points and 4.1 rebounds — both career highs — along with four assists in 30 games this season.

The injury occurred when Orlando’s Cole Anthony slipped and fell as he and Ivey reached for the ball.

Anthony’s momentum carried him into Ivey’s planted leg, causing Ivey to fall to the floor. The 22-year-old Ivey appeared to be in serious pain, clutching his shin, and the team’s medical staff quickly came to his aid.

Members of the training staff held up towels to block the crowd’s view of the injury, while players from both teams gathered around him. After a lengthy delay, Ivey was loaded onto a stretcher and wheeled out of the arena, with a towel covering his injury.

“It is tough for all of us,” Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said after Detroit’s 105-96 victory. “There’s no better person or teammate than J.I. and no one cares more about this than he does.”

Pistons defeat Magic to secure fourth win in five games

Jaden Ivey scored 22 points before suffering a potentially serious left leg injury as the Detroit Pistons beat the Orlando Magic 105-96 on Wednesday night.

Ivey got hurt when Orlando’s Cole Anthony dove for a loose ball early in the fourth quarter and collided with Ivey’s leg. Ivey had to leave the court on a stretcher.

Cade Cunningham added 19 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds. Jalen Duren contributed 18 points and 11 rebounds, Tobias Harris had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 12 points for Detroit, which has won four of its last five games.

Jalen Suggs led Orlando with 24 points. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 21 points, and Wendell Carter Jr. finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.

The Pistons shot 64.1 percent from the field in the first half and led 65-49 at halftime. Ivey had 16 points, and Cunningham added 12 points as they combined to make all seven of their 3-point attempts. Orlando was already trailing by eight points with 3:30 left in the half, and Detroit extended its lead with a 14-6 run.

Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers

Orlando came out strong in the second half, scoring on its first three possessions, which led the Pistons to call a timeout. Detroit quickly pushed its lead to 18 points, 73-55, thanks to another 3-pointer from Ivey off a pass from Cunningham.

After a basket by Suggs cut the lead to 13, Duren scored two dunks during a 6-1 run for Detroit.

Suggs helped spark an Orlando comeback, scoring six points, making a block, and getting an assist during a 14-1 run. Detroit finished the third quarter strong, scoring the last two baskets, including a layup from Ivey, to lead 84-75 heading into the fourth.

The Magic opened the fourth quarter with the first four points before Ivey’s injury with 10:07 left.

Orlando kept pushing. Carter’s basket with 7:40 left cut the Pistons’ lead to three points.

With the score at 93-90, Detroit responded. Duren scored on a putback, Harris made a jumper, Hardaway hit a midrange shot, and Harris added a bank shot to push the lead to 101-90. The Magic never got closer than seven points after that.

Battling injuries, Magic continue fight in matchup with Pistons

The Orlando Magic are heading into the new year hoping to get their two best players back soon. In the meantime, they will try to maintain their slim lead in the Southeast Division.

Despite major injuries to Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, the Magic have reached 20 wins this season. They aim to start 2025 strong with a game against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.

Banchero, who has been gradually increasing his activity, has only played five games so far. Wagner has been out since Dec. 6.

Moritz Wagner, Franz’s brother and a key bench player, is out for the season due to a torn ACL. Jalen Suggs also left the Magic’s 102-101 win over Brooklyn on Sunday with a right wrist sprain.

These injuries have affected all four of Orlando’s double-digit scorers, but the Magic have still managed to hold onto the best record in their division, ahead of Atlanta and Miami.

“It speaks so much to the resiliency of our guys, the grit of our guys (and) the preparation of the coaching staff,” said coach Jamahl Mosley.

Rookie forward Tristan da Silva has helped fill the gap, averaging 14.3 points over the last seven games, including a team-high 21 points against the Nets.

Suggs is listed as probable for Wednesday, but if he’s out, Cole Anthony and Cory Joseph will likely take over his minutes.

Franz Wagner dribbles in the game

“We have enough — no matter who’s on the floor,” Mosley said. “We know how we’re going to defend. We know how we’re going to communicate. We know how we’re going to keep fighting.”

The Pistons come into this game after a strong 3-1 road trip, with wins over Phoenix, the Los Angeles Lakers, and Sacramento, though they lost to Denver.

That 134-121 defeat didn’t dampen the team’s optimism. The Pistons have already matched their win total from last season.

“The road trip was really good for this group,” said first-year head coach J.B. Bickerstaff.

Unlike the Magic, the Pistons have avoided major injuries, allowing Bickerstaff to build a consistent rotation.

Cade Cunningham, who leads the team with 24.0 points, 9.7 assists, and 6.7 rebounds per game, is the key player for Detroit. Though he scored just 17 points against the Nuggets, he averaged 27 points and 11 assists during the Pistons’ three road wins.

“It’s a lot of different things,” said center Jalen Duren. “Obviously a new coaching staff, new leaders in the organization, got some good vets in. Good talent. We’re growing up as a team. Guys who have been here are getting older and more experienced in the league. You put that all together, it’s a recipe for success. Just got to keep going.”

Reserve guard Malik Beasley has been a major contributor, averaging 21.5 points over the last six games and 16.7 points per game for the season. He is a candidate for Sixth Man of the Year.

This is the second of three matchups between the Magic and Pistons. In the first meeting on Nov. 23, the Wagner brothers combined for 48 points in a 111-100 Orlando victory.

Knicks defeat Magic for the third time this month

Jalen Brunson scored 26 points and had nine assists, while Josh Hart contributed 23 points and 13 rebounds, leading the New York Knicks to a 108-85 win over the Orlando Magic on Friday night.

Brunson made 11 of 21 shots, helping the Knicks beat the Magic for the third time this month. He had 21 points in New York’s 121-106 win on Dec. 3 and 31 points in a 100-91 win on Dec. 15 in Florida. Hart made 7 of 11 shots from the floor.

The Knicks outscored Orlando 54-31 in the second half, extending their season-high winning streak to six games.

Mikal Bridges followed his season-high 41-point performance in a 117-114 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday with 17 points on Friday. Karl-Anthony Towns added 16 points and eight rebounds for New York, which shot an impressive 53.3 percent from the floor despite a poor 70.6 percent from the free-throw line.

The Knicks also dominated in the paint, outscoring Orlando 60-34, and had a 21-2 advantage in fast-break points.

Jalen Suggs led Orlando with 27 points, and Goga Bitadze added 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Magic have lost five of their last seven games.

Jalen Brunson heads to the bench in the 2nd half

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope tied the game at 65-65 with a driving layup, but the Knicks responded with a 26-9 run bridging the third and fourth quarters.

Hart’s tip-in at the buzzer gave the Knicks a 76-68 lead at the end of the third. He then added a three-point play and a 3-pointer during New York’s 9-2 run early in the fourth quarter.

Brunson finished the run with a finger roll layup with 7:52 left in the game. The Knicks stretched their lead to 104-80 after Towns’ 3-pointer and free throws from Miles McBride, effectively sealing the victory.

Orlando’s Gary Harris, returning after missing 13 games due to a left hamstring strain, scored two points in 15 minutes of play.

Knicks continue December surge, set to face Magic next

The New York Knicks are looking to keep their strong December performance going when they play the Orlando Magic to kick off a three-game road trip on Friday night.

The Knicks have been in great form, winning 15 of their last 19 games, including nine of their last 11 in December.

New York has already beaten Orlando twice this month, first with a 121-106 win on December 3 in New York, where Karl-Anthony Towns had 23 points and 15 rebounds. The Knicks then won 100-91 in Orlando on December 15, with Towns posting 22 points and 22 rebounds.

Mikal Bridges had a career-high 41 points in the Knicks’ 117-114 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Christmas Day. He made 17 of 25 shots and 6 of 9 from three-point range.

“We just look at each other and see if we’re getting better or not. I think that’s the biggest thing,” Bridges said, according to the New York Post. “I think we took a jump this month. Every day we just keep trying to get better. We want to win. That’s the main goal. But sometimes just getting better is what we’re looking for.”

Bridges has averaged 22.7 points per game this month while shooting 57.7 percent from the field and 46.9 percent from three. He was averaging just 15.5 points before December.

Mikal Bridges and Trae Young in the 1st half

“Slow and steady wins the race, and that’s what he’s been,” said Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau of Bridges. “If you look at his whole career, he just keeps getting better and better. He does everything. He can run the floor, move without the ball, and create advantages. He’s smart and does so many things that help our team.”

While New York is on the rise, Orlando is facing struggles. The Magic blew a 17-point lead on Thursday night and lost 89-88 to the Miami Heat, marking their fourth loss in the last six games.

Jalen Suggs, who led the team with 29 points, missed a potential game-winning jumper at the buzzer. Orlando struggled from three-point range, hitting just 5 of 29 attempts.

Rookie Tristan da Silva has been stepping up in the absence of small forward Franz Wagner, who is out with an oblique injury. Da Silva scored 18 points in back-to-back games.

“Suggs said of da Silva, “He’s had to step up with some bodies going down with different roles and different possessions. He is taking everything head held high, with the utmost confidence and staying even-keeled throughout mistakes, good games and bad games. He’s a rookie but he’s still 23.”

Tyler Herro’s clutch basket seals Heat’s comeback win over the Magic

Tyler Herro made a 15-foot shot with 0.5 seconds left to give the Miami Heat an 89-88 win over the Orlando Magic on Thursday night.

The Magic had a 17-point lead but lost it and never trailed until the fourth quarter.

Herro led the Heat with 20 points, helping them get revenge on the Magic after they blew a 25-point lead in a 121-114 loss on Saturday.

Orlando had a chance for a final shot, with Jalen Suggs receiving the ball and taking a long 3-pointer, but it bounced off the rim and was ruled to have been taken after the buzzer. Suggs finished with a game-high 29 points but struggled with his 3-point shooting, making only 2 of 11 attempts.

Tristan da Silva scored 18 points for Orlando. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 11 points, and Goga Bitadze contributed 10 points and 14 rebounds.

For the Heat, Alec Burks scored 17 points, and Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 15. Bam Adebayo had nine rebounds, seven assists, and four points.

The Heat played without star Jimmy Butler, who missed his third consecutive game. With trade rumors surrounding him, Heat president Pat Riley denied that Butler would be traded.

Jimmy Butler and Scottie Barnes in the 2nd half

Miami trailed by 10 points going into the fourth quarter but got a big boost from Burks, who scored 11 points in the final period. He gave the Heat their first lead of the game with a jumper from the elbow with 7:42 left, then hit a 3-pointer to make it 80-76.

Herro added a basket to make it 87-82 with 2:05 remaining, but the Magic responded with six straight points to take the lead, capped by Bitadze tipping in a pass.

After a timeout, Herro delivered the game-winning shot for the Heat.

Miami made 15 of 30 shots from 3-point range, while the Magic were just 5 of 29. The teams combined for 35 fouls and 41 turnovers.

Orlando started strong with a 14-0 run, fueled by Caldwell-Pope’s six early points. Miami’s first basket came more than five minutes into the game.

The Magic led 52-41 at halftime, despite committing 14 turnovers. Suggs had 18 points at the break.

Orlando’s record streak of 43 consecutive made free throws ended in the third quarter when Bitadze missed.
