Pavel Zacha nets another overtime goal to lead the Bruins past the Flyers

Pavel Zacha scored his second overtime game-winning goal in three games to help the Boston Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

After Boston goalie Jeremy Swayman (23 saves) stopped a breakaway from Joel Farabee in overtime, David Pastrnak skated around the net and passed the puck to Zacha, who scored the game-winning goal at 2:49.

Trent Frederic had two goals for Boston, including his second multi-goal game of the season, and Brad Marchand scored the game-tying goal, extending the Bruins’ winning streak to four games.

Matvei Michkov gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead in the first period, becoming the first NHL rookie to score 10 goals this season.

Cam York also scored for Philadelphia, while Travis Sanheim had two assists and Aleksei Kolosov made 27 saves. The Flyers have lost two straight games (0-1-1) after a 4-0-1 stretch.

Marchand tied the game with 5:22 left in regulation, beating Kolosov with a shot through the legs after receiving a pass from Justin Brazeau.

Boston Bruins (NHL)

The game went to overtime despite the Bruins having three power plays in the third period. Frederic had scored his second goal at 5:18, deflecting a shot from Charlie Coyle.

Boston had 31 shots to Philadelphia’s 26.

Michkov scored two of Philadelphia’s first six shots. He opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 7:24 of the first period. After Emil Andrae’s shot was blocked, Sean Couturier passed the puck to Michkov, who scored from the right circle.

The Flyers made it 2-0 when Sanheim passed the puck to Michkov, who skated to the crease and scored on an open side of Swayman’s net.

After Kolosov made a sliding save on Morgan Geekie, Frederic got the Bruins on the board with a rebound goal at 5:26 of the second period, assisted by Mason Lohrei.

York gave the Flyers a 3-1 lead with 4:31 left in the second period, taking a pass from Sanheim and scoring with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle.

Matthew Tkachuk records 5-point performance as Panthers defeat Flyers in high-scoring game

Sam Reinhart scored the go-ahead goal with 1:59 left, and Matthew Tkachuk had a goal and four assists to lead the Florida Panthers to a 7-5 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.

During a scramble in front of the net, Carter Verhaeghe made a no-look backhand pass to an open Reinhart, who blasted a slap shot into the empty net for his 19th goal, leading the league. This goal broke a 5-5 tie.

The goal came just after Joel Farabee of the Flyers was penalized for cross-checking, giving the Panthers a power play. Tkachuk added an empty-net goal with 11 seconds left to seal the win.

Owen Tippett scored twice, and Matvei Michkov had three assists for Philadelphia, which saw its three-game winning streak come to an end. Flyers goalie Ivan Fedotov gave up two goals on seven shots, and Aleksei Kolosov allowed four goals on 20 shots in relief during the final two periods.

The Flyers were down 4-2 late in the second period when Tippett scored twice in just 23 seconds. First, he scored off a one-timer from Michkov, then he tapped in a rebound of his own shot to tie the game with 1:56 left in the second.

Sam Reinhart pumped after the goal

Garnet Hathaway gave Philadelphia a 5-4 lead at 14:21 of the third period, scoring during a scramble in front of the net. Florida answered with 5:17 left when Gustav Forsling scored from the blue line with a flip shot that Kolosov didn’t see.

Evan Rodrigues opened the game with a goal 2:36 into the first period, stealing the puck from Tyson Foerster and beating Fedotov. Niko Mikkola made it 2-0 less than five minutes later, and Aleksander Barkov increased the lead to 3-0 with a power-play goal off a great pass from Reinhart early in the second.

The second period saw six goals. Foerster and Nick Seeler scored for the Flyers, making it 3-2, but Verhaeghe restored Florida’s two-goal lead with a rebound goal over Kolosov’s shoulder.

Florida goalie Spencer Knight made 29 saves, helping the Panthers win four of their last five games.

The Flyers, on a winning streak, will face the Panthers, who could be missing their starting goalie

The Philadelphia Flyers are playing their best hockey of the season, but they will face a new challenge on Thursday when they host the defending champion Florida Panthers.

The Flyers are 4-0-1 in their last five games, including three overtime wins. Rookie winger Matvei Michkov has scored overtime goals in two of those victories. The 19-year-old Russian has netted three overtime goals in the last nine games, including a 3-2 win at St. Louis on Saturday.

“We’ve had some confidence with (overtime),” said Flyers coach John Tortorella. “Michkov has helped us quite a bit there. Last year, we struggled with it.”

The Flyers have had a break since Saturday’s win, so it remains to be seen if their recent momentum will carry into Thursday’s game.

One area that could help the Flyers against Florida is the possible return of their No. 1 goaltender Samuel Ersson, who has been out since Nov. 11 with a lower-body injury. Ivan Fedotov and Aleksei Kolosov have shared time in net during Ersson’s absence, with mixed results.

Tortorella is thankful for the chance to evaluate both backup goalies, but he also wants to continue seeing how Ersson performs in his first full season as the team’s starting goalie.

“All this stuff with the injuries, the goalie, our No. 1 guy gone, it gives us an idea of what we have,” Tortorella said. “And that’s a big part of this year and, quite honestly, next (year) because there are no free agents coming. We have to keep on evaluating what we have in the organization.”

Florida Panthers (NHL)

Florida knows what it has in its top goalie, Sergei Bobrovsky. However, Bobrovsky has been out recently while waiting for the birth of his child. He is expected to miss Thursday’s game, which could mean another start for Spencer Knight.

Knight allowed five goals on 16 shots in Tuesday’s overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, leaving Panthers coach Paul Maurice with mixed feelings.

“It was alright. I think that’s how we felt about it,” Maurice said. “I don’t think we gave up a tremendous amount. I don’t think we took advantage of some things that we normally do. I’m not 100 percent sure how I feel about that one.”

After winning their previous three games by a combined score of 17-4, the Panthers were down 4-1 to the Penguins with under 14 minutes remaining. However, Matthew Tkachuk scored a goal and had two assists in the third period to help his team force overtime, although they ultimately lost.

“I guess it’s a point that we’re happy to get,” said Tkachuk, who finished with two goals and two assists to surpass 600 career points. He now has 603 points in his ninth season. “But when we fight back, you just really want to get that win.”

Jesper Boqvist had two assists, and his brother Adam Boqvist scored a goal for Florida.

“We just know when we go out there that we can wear teams down,” said Adam Boqvist. “I think we almost showed that tonight with the third period. Just move on from this.”

The Panthers beat the Flyers 4-3 in a shootout last month in Florida. The two teams will meet again on Jan. 13 in Philadelphia.

Matvei Michkov steps up once more, scoring in overtime to lead the Flyers past the Blues

Matvei Michkov scored his third overtime goal in November, helping the Philadelphia Flyers end the month with a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.

Michkov, who will turn 20 on December 9, scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway after Travis Konecny passed him the puck while falling to the ice. Michkov also had a great assist earlier in the game, and Aleksei Kolosov made 26 saves for the Flyers.

Jake Neighbours tied the game for the Blues late in regulation, and Dylan Holloway also scored for St. Louis. Jordan Binnington made 28 saves, but the Blues lost their first game under new coach Jim Montgomery.

After Konecny was called for a late penalty, the Blues tied the game with 18.3 seconds left on a 6-on-4 power play. Kolosov made a great save on Jordan Kyrou and an amazing toe stop on Justin Faulk, but Neighbours managed to poke the puck into the net as Kolosov tried to cover the rebound.

St. Louis Blues players celebrate in the 3rd period

Down 1-0, the Blues tied it at 8:49 in the third period when Holloway scored his seventh goal. Brayden Schenn passed the puck to Holloway in the slot, and he had time to take a shot that beat Kolosov.

Less than a minute later, Bobby Brink had a chance to score but hit the post on a backhand. The puck stayed next to the crease, and Tyson Foerster quickly scored his fifth goal of the season.

The Flyers scored first at 9:15 in the game with Owen Tippett’s fifth goal of the season. Michkov attracted a St. Louis defender on a 2-on-1 and passed the puck perfectly to Tippett, who shot it past Binnington.

With just under 10 minutes left in regulation, the Flyers had a chance to score on a Sean Couturier breakaway and the following scramble in front of the net, but they couldn’t convert. Those missed chances were important, as St. Louis tied the game just a minute later.

Flyers look to bounce back from missed chance as they take on Predators

The Philadelphia Flyers will try to move past a missed opportunity when they play the Nashville Predators on Wednesday night.

The Flyers were ahead 3-0 against the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday but ended up losing 5-4 in a shootout. Meanwhile, the Predators lost 5-2 to the New Jersey Devils after Nico Hischier scored a natural hat trick in the second period.

Morgan Frost had a goal and an assist, and Ivan Fedotov made 26 saves for Philadelphia. The Flyers lost for the third time in four games, bringing their record to 1-2-1 in their last four. Rookie right winger Matvei Michkov scored his eighth goal of the season as the Flyers finished a five-game homestand with a 2-2-1 record.

“One of our better showings in the offensive zone as far as puck movement and people moving without it,” said Philadelphia coach John Tortorella. “Take out seven or eight minutes, it’s a really good game by us. But that’s a really good team. They’ll capitalize.”

For Frost, it was his second goal of the season and his sixth assist.

“It’s nice to contribute, for sure. It’s been a struggle in that area for me,” Frost said. “It was nice to contribute there and hopefully keep building on it and contribute more going offensively.”

Sean Couturier has scored in back-to-back games for the Flyers, and Travis Konecny has points in nine of the last 10 games (six goals, 10 assists).

Nashville Predators (NHL)

The Predators have alternated wins and losses in their last four games and have lost five of their last seven (2-3-2).

Filip Forsberg and Zachary L’Heureux scored for Nashville against the Devils, but goaltender Juuse Saros was pulled after giving up four goals on 30 shots in the first two periods. Scott Wedgewood stopped all 15 shots he faced in relief.

“I thought (the Devils) were faster, they won more battles, and they were just a better team for 60 minutes,” said Predators captain Roman Josi. “We had a little bit of a push in the third, but it was way too late. We’ve been talking about it — we have one good game and we fall back to a bad game, and we’re not in a position to do that. We need to find consistency.”

L’Heureux, Nashville’s first-round pick (No. 27 overall) in the 2021 draft, made it 4-2 early in the third period with a backhander on a breakaway for his second goal of the season.

“He’s been great,” said Josi of L’Heureux. “He has a lot of energy. Obviously, scores a nice goal. And just in general, gets on the forecheck, he gets pucks back, he’s hard to play against. So, he’s been great.”

Nashville was 0-for-5 on the power play, after having scored on three of eight chances in the previous three games.

Before Monday’s game, the Predators traded forward Philip Tomasino to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. Tomasino had one assist in 11 games this season for Nashville.

Nashville forward Michael McCarron (upper-body, day-to-day) did not play on Monday.

Knights erase 3-0 deficit, eventually defeat Flyers in shootout

Jack Eichel scored the only goal in a shootout on Monday, leading the Vegas Golden Knights to a 5-4 comeback win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Eichel and Ivan Barbashev each recorded a goal and an assist in regular time as Vegas fought back from a 3-0 deficit to improve to 3-1-0 on their five-game road trip. Goaltender Ilya Samsonov made 32 saves in regulation and stopped all three Flyers’ shootout attempts.

Philadelphia ended its homestand with a 2-2-1 record, with Morgan Frost contributing a goal and an assist, and rookie defenseman Emil Andrae scoring his first NHL goal. Sean Couturier and Matvei Michkov also scored for the Flyers, while Ivan Fedotov made 26 saves.

Eichel scored the game-winning goal in the shootout, shooting a wrist shot past Fedotov. Samsonov then stopped Owen Tippett’s attempt to secure the win.

The Flyers were ahead 4-3 until Tanner Pearson tied the game with 8:05 remaining in the third period. Pearson stole the puck on the forecheck and fired a one-timer from the slot after receiving a pass from Noah Hanifin.

Vegas Golden Knights and Utah Hockey Club

Philadelphia had a power play in overtime but couldn’t convert. Samsonov made a big save on Travis Sanheim, and Sanheim later hit the post during the man advantage.

The Flyers led 2-0 after the first period thanks to goals from Frost and Couturier. Frost tipped in a shot from Rasmus Ristolainen to give Philadelphia the lead, and Couturier scored after getting past the defense to beat Samsonov inside the right post.

Andrae’s goal on a rebound made it 3-0 early in the second period, but the Golden Knights quickly answered. Eichel scored to put Vegas on the board, then assisted Barbashev to make it 3-2 about four minutes later.

Michkov scored to give the Flyers a two-goal lead again, but the Golden Knights responded. Pavel Dorofeyev scored a power-play goal with a one-timer past Fedotov with 1:50 remaining in the second period.
