The Seattle Seahawks gear up for a crucial season finale to stay in the playoff race

For only the second time in franchise history, the Seattle Seahawks will miss the playoffs despite winning at least 10 games in a season. They secured a 30-25 victory over the Los Angeles Rams to close the season.

The Seahawks were eliminated from playoff contention the previous weekend when they lost out on a tiebreaker following the results of Week 17. With their playoff hopes gone, they played for pride and to give head coach Mike Macdonald his 10th win in his first season as coach.

“I thought our guys did a tremendous job of staying focused on what our new goal was, finishing the year the right way, and it was a great team win,” Macdonald said.

Geno Smith threw a career-high four touchdown passes and led his 12th game-winning drive in three seasons with the Seahawks. He also set new career-highs and franchise records for attempts (578), completions (407), yards (4,320), and completion percentage (70.42).

This is the first time since 1986 that the Seahawks have missed the playoffs with 10 wins. Fifteen teams in the NFL have won 10 games this season, and the Seahawks are the only team not in the postseason due to losing a strength-of-victory tiebreaker to the Rams.

“I’m telling you, man, this team is heading in the right direction. This team is on its way and that’s with or without me. These guys in this locker room, these coaches, this organization, outstanding organization, and I believe in it,” Smith said.

Whether the season is seen as a success or disappointment depends on your expectations for the team. A rookie head coach with a mostly new coaching staff winning 10 games in their first season together can be seen as a success. But with the team’s strong performance, it’s understandable to feel that more could have been done.

If the offensive line had been stronger, if free-agent signings had been more effective, and if Smith had thrown fewer interceptions, the Seahawks might have had a chance for a deep playoff run. A single bad loss to the New York Giants was the reason the Seahawks didn’t have a chance to win the NFC West this weekend.

Geno Smith reacts in the 1st half

Here are the key points from the end of the Seahawks’ regular season:

– Geno Smith sets career highs, and earns $6 million in incentives.

Smith wrapped up a solid season as the Seahawks’ quarterback by setting multiple career-highs, earning an additional $6 million in contract incentives.

He completed 20 of 27 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns in the win over the Rams. He led an eight-play, 70-yard game-winning drive in the fourth quarter. Smith threw the winning touchdown to Noah Fant while playing through a hip injury on the final drive.

“Talk about one of the guys that fought all the way to the very end for us,” Macdonald said. “Putting a drive…par for the course for Geno coming after another fourth-quarter comeback.”

Smith needed 185 passing yards, a 10th win, and a completion percentage over 69.755 to earn three separate incentives worth $2 million each.

Smith said his only motivation was to win, not the extra money.

“Winning games, that’s the most important thing,” he said. “We got 10 wins this season. Should have been more. I believe we’ve got the right guys in this locker room. Personal stats aren’t a big deal for me. I’m not out here chasing accolades.

I want to win, and I want to win for the guys in that locker room. I want to win for our coaching staff. I want win for our front office and all the people that work, our kitchen staff, our strength staff, all the people that work so hard, man. They deserve to have the best of the best. For me personally, I expect to do well, but again, it’s a team game and I just want to be there for my teammates.”

Smith ended the season with 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, the most in his three years as a starter for the Seahawks, and third-most in the NFL this season.

However, the Seahawks’ struggles with their offensive line and the lack of a steady running game forced Smith to carry too much of the offense on his own. He was sacked 50 times this season, the third-most in the league, behind Chicago’s Caleb Williams (68) and Houston’s C.J. Stroud (52). The Seahawks also finished 28th in rushing, averaging only 95.7 yards per game.

Smith has one year left on his contract, which could lead to extension talks this offseason. Although he wouldn’t comment on his interest in a new contract, Smith is confident the Seahawks are moving forward.

“I’m telling you man, this team is heading in the right direction. This team is on its way. That’s with or without me,” Smith said. “These guys in this locker room, these coaches, this organization, outstanding organization, and I believe in it. I believe the best of the best is going to happen for this team. I just want to continue to fight with these guys.”

Tyler Lockett reacts after a reception in the 1st half

– Tyler Lockett hints at goodbye to Seahawks.

Tyler Lockett has been with the Seattle Seahawks for 10 seasons and is the second-most productive receiver in the team’s history. He knows that this could have been his final game with the Seahawks.

At the start of his post-game press conference, Lockett took time to thank the equipment and training staff of the team, speaking as if it could be his last time with Seattle.

“It just speaks volumes the people that we have in this building and been blessed to be able to know them, some of them for 10 years, some of them for six some of them for one. But definitely got to get them a shout-out.”

Lockett has a cap hit of almost $31 million for next season. The Seahawks could save $17 million against the cap by releasing or trading Lockett this offseason. His production dropped this season, with Jaxon Smith-Njigba emerging as a key player. Smith-Njigba even matched Lockett’s single-season reception record on Sunday, which may make Lockett’s contract hard for the team to keep.

“Obviously, you never know when it’s going to be the end,” Lockett said. “Because I kind of plan on playing again. I know it’s not the very, very end. It would be different if I was retiring, but yeah, I mean, I think it’s always going to be somewhat sensitive, just because that could have been the last time you put on a jersey, so I’m glad I ended with a catch, you know, just in case. Glad we ended up with a win.”

Smith-Njigba reached 100 catches this season with his four receptions against the Rams on Sunday, tying Lockett’s 100-catch season from 2020, although Lockett did it in one fewer game.

“I mean, shout out to Jax for wanting me to still be right there beside him. … But I mean, I think that’s dope, man. Like, at least I’m able to share it with somebody,” Lockett said.

Lockett also shared that he felt his biggest contribution this year was sacrificing his own role to allow others to shine. He did it willingly to help the team, but his own numbers were affected. After 10 years with the Seahawks, their relationship may be coming to an end.

“I think the city is amazing. I always view Seattle as a college town. And yeah, maybe this isn’t the end. Maybe it is the end, but you know, I always will be a Seahawk through and through,” Lockett said.

Leonard Williams celebrates in the game

– Leonard Williams completes a standout season for Seahawks.

It’s a mistake that Leonard Williams isn’t a Pro Bowler this season.

Williams added two more sacks to his total on Sunday, reaching 11 sacks for the season. This is the second-most sacks in his career and just the fourth time in Seahawks history that an interior defensive lineman has reached double-digit sacks. He joins Cortez Kennedy (14.0 sacks, 1992), John Randle (11.0 sacks, 2001), and Jarran Reed (10.5 sacks, 2018).

“He didn’t need a punctuation (or) exclamation point, but he sure added one today with all the work that he’s done,” said Macdonald.

Williams also didn’t make the Pro Bowl in 2020, even though he had a career-high 11.5 sacks with the New York Giants that season. He also had a memorable 92-yard interception return for a touchdown against the New York Jets, which helped the team win a comeback victory.

Williams’ presence has also helped other players on the defensive line improve. Reed has been strong again for Seattle, and Derick Hall and Boye Mafe have shown more consistency as edge rushers this season alongside Williams.

“I think our front, in order for ‘Leo’ to come alive, you have to rush as one,” Macdonald said. “We’ve talked about this the whole season, but he’s doing it within the lens of playing with each other, playing off one another.

The defensive front has just done a great job of playing together, playing off one another, growing together. That’s the type of football team we want to create, guys that are a connected group that play for one another.”

The additions of Ernest Jones IV and Roy Robertson-Harris midseason were also important, but Williams set the tone for Macdonald’s defense on the front line.

Williams will likely make the Pro Bowl as an alternate in the coming weeks, but he should have been named a starter from the beginning.

The Seattle Seahawks’ playoff chances depend on their last regular-season game

The Seahawks didn’t expect their season to end this way, with a Week 18 game that has no playoff implications after they were eliminated last weekend.

Even though the Seahawks can’t make the playoffs with a 10th win, they still believe there’s a lot to play for when they head to Los Angeles to face the Rams.

“You’re always trying to win your next game,” Macdonald said. “This is the next game. That’s number one. There are broader goals: getting to 10 wins, aiming to be 4-2 in our division, playing our style of football the way we know how, and setting up a foundation for the future.

There’s a lot at stake for us this weekend. It’s not the stakes we wanted, but they’re still important.”

“You’re just trying to get our guys to play their best football,” he continued. “Your goals have changed recently, so we’re trying to make that clear and stay positive, doing the best we can to become the team we want to be.

It’s not easy for anyone, but our guys have been great. I’ve been really impressed with their determination, attitude, and communication the past few days. They’ve been amazing.”

As Macdonald mentioned, there are important foundational goals for the Seahawks beyond just reaching 10 wins. For a team working under a new head coach and staff, there are ups and downs and opportunities for growth. Finishing strong is about pride and also about setting a tone for 2025.

DK Metcalf makes a catch in the 1s half

Receiver DK Metcalf said, “This is all of our resume, especially (Macdonald’s) resume, so he’s not trying to go out on a loss. We’re trying to win every game. If they keep score, he’s trying to win. That’s the mentality the coach has, and it’s the mentality all the players have. It’s good to build for next year.

It’s his first year, and we have a learning curve. He’ll carry over some things into next year, and others he won’t. I think it’s been a good year—a good first year for everyone.”

Linebacker Ernest Jones IV added, “In our eyes, we’re still playing for a lot—10 wins, the chance to start this year the right way and set things up for next year. We’re going to go out and play the right way.

Even though we’re out of the playoffs and this is our last game, we want to leave our mark with our style of football. We’ve got another game, and no matter what it’s for, we’ve got to play for the name on our jersey and the Seahawks logo.”

As Metcalf mentioned, NFL players are too competitive and proud to stop playing just because the stakes have changed.

He said, “In the NFL, there are a lot of competitive guys, especially on this team. So, I wouldn’t expect anything less than for us to go out and play like we’re still fighting for the playoffs. It shows the opposing team the kind of identity this team will have moving forward.

No, we’re not going to just lay down and accept not making the playoffs and think this last week will be easy.”

There are also individual goals that motivate players, such as financial rewards or personal milestones. Second-year receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba is just five catches away from breaking Tyler Lockett’s franchise record of 100 receptions in a season.

Leonard Williams, with 9.0 sacks, could become the first Seahawks player with a double-digit sack season since Frank Clark in 2018. Geno Smith also has contract incentives within reach, along with a good chance to break his own single-season records for passing yards, completions, and completion percentage.

Seahawks Edge Bears 6-3 in Defensive Struggle, Turnover Woes Remain a Concern

The Seattle Seahawks secured a narrow 6-3 victory over the Chicago Bears in their Week 17 matchup, marking the lowest-scoring game of the 2024 NFL season. Despite struggling offensively, managing only 265 total yards, the Seahawks relied on two field goals by Jason Myers and a dominant defensive performance to win the game. The offense’s failure to produce significant yards was compounded by a turnover, but the defense stepped up to prevent additional damage.

The turnover issue has been a recurring problem for the 9-7 Seahawks all season, and it played a role in Thursday’s game. Tight end Pharaoh Brown was responsible for the lone turnover when Bears defensive back Kyler Gordon stripped the ball from him in the third quarter. The turnover nearly led to a Bears touchdown, but after review, it was correctly ruled that Gordon was down by contact, and Chicago was forced to punt. The defense, once again, bailed out the Seahawks’ offense in this key moment.

Seattle’s failure to win the turnover battle was another significant aspect of the game. They finished with one turnover apiece, with cornerback Riq Woolen intercepting a desperate pass from rookie quarterback Caleb Williams in the game’s final moments. Despite the interception, the Seahawks remain one of the worst teams in the NFL in turnover differential, ranked seventh-worst at negative-7. The teams worse than Seattle in turnovers are mainly those competing for high draft picks in 2025.

The Seahawks were fortunate not to experience more turnovers in the game. Earlier in the contest, Geno Smith was strip-sacked by his former teammate, Darrell Taylor, which could have been another costly mistake. However, starting center Olu Oluwatimi recovered the fumble, preventing a turnover and keeping the drive alive. Despite the setback, the Seahawks’ offense was unable to capitalize, punting the ball back after losing yardage on the possession.

Despite consistently losing the turnover battle throughout the season, the Seahawks managed to secure a winning record at 9-7. Ball security has been a persistent issue for the team, and it will be a major focus in the offseason. Looking ahead, the Seahawks still have a chance to win the NFC West and extend their season into the playoffs with a strong performance in Week 18.

The Bears’ defense shines, but the offense falters in a 6-3 defeat against the Seahawks

The defense played well for the Chicago Bears, delivering one of their best performances of the season.

But it wasn’t enough.

“I guess we should have held them to three points or zero points at the end of the day,” said safety Kevin Byard.

Byard and the rest of the defense shut down the Seahawks on Thursday night, limiting quarterback Geno Smith and the team to just 265 yards and two field goals from Jason Myers. However, Chicago’s offense only gained 179 yards, leading to a 6-3 loss.

The Bears (4-12) became the first NFL team to lose after allowing only six points or fewer since the Raiders lost 3-0 to the Vikings on Dec. 10, 2023. It was only the fourth time in the last 90 years that the Bears lost while giving up six points or fewer.

The previous instances were a 6-3 loss to Tampa Bay on Oct. 24, 1999, a 6-3 loss to Denver on Dec. 5, 1971, and a 3-0 loss to the New York Giants on Nov. 17, 1935.

The defense was expected to carry the team, especially after selecting quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick in the draft. But the defense had been struggling recently, contributing to the team’s 10-game losing streak since a 4-2 start.

In their previous five games, the Bears allowed an average of 31 points and 422.6 yards per game.

“Our defense has a certain standard, and we’ve shown it,” said defensive back Kyler Gordon. “Obviously sinking a little bit; just getting back on the guys to obviously get back right. It’s just important to know what we can do. Just go in there and execute. We did way better today.”

Seattle Seahawks celebrates after an interception in the 1st half

Gordon made a big play with the Bears trailing 6-3 late in the third quarter. He stripped the ball from Pharaoh Brown after a 4-yard reception. Gordon emerged with the ball and ran up the field, briefly chased by Tyler Lockett. Lockett then turned back in confusion.

The play was originally called a 62-yard fumble return for a touchdown, but after review, the officials determined Gordon had been down at the Chicago 38-yard line.

“Apparently someone touched my leg,” Gordon said. “I don’t know. They got to show me a replay before I believe it.”

The Bears gained one first down before quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked for a 14-yard loss, and the drive ended.

Seattle had a chance to finish the game in the fourth quarter. Smith completed a 23-yard pass to DK Metcalf to get the Seahawks to their own 40-yard line. But on third-and-6, Smith’s pass to Zach Charbonnet gained just 2 yards, and Seattle punted the ball back to the Bears with about five minutes left.

The Bears sacked Smith three times, and Seattle converted only 5 of 13 third-down attempts.

“I think we played our brand of ball today,” Byard said. “Guys flew around. Ky got the turnover. Wanted to get a little bit more, but I think we flew around. We played hard. We know we’re a resilient group, but I just think that the execution was a lot better.”

49ers Dominate Seahawks in Convincing Win but Highlight Areas Needing Improvement

The San Francisco 49ers demonstrated why they are considered one of the top teams in the NFL despite a 2-3 start to the season. In their Thursday night matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, the 49ers secured a convincing 36-24 victory, further establishing their dominance over their NFC West rival. While the game showcased their talent and resilience, it also highlighted areas needing improvement, particularly in maintaining a lead and special teams performance.

The 49ers set the tone early, taking control of the game in the first half. Their offense was sharp, and their defense was unrelenting, keeping the Seahawks largely at bay. George Kittle played a pivotal role in the victory, scoring two touchdowns, while Deebo Samuel added a remarkable long touchdown that showcased his explosive playmaking ability. Despite their strong start, the 49ers showed a tendency to let opponents back into games, a recurring issue this season.

Seattle’s struggles against San Francisco continued under new head coach Mike Macdonald. The Seahawks have been outmatched by the 49ers over the past few seasons, losing multiple games in uncompetitive fashion. Although the Seahawks began the game with a promising drive, it ended in disappointment as Geno Smith threw an interception deep in 49ers territory. The turnover set the stage for San Francisco to capitalize on momentum and establish an early lead.

The 49ers demonstrated their offensive prowess with a long drive starting from their own 3-yard line following the interception. While they settled for a field goal, the drive exemplified their ability to dominate in the trenches and dictate the game’s pace. Brock Purdy effectively led the offense, finishing with three touchdown passes and 255 passing yards. The team’s red zone struggles, however, prevented them from converting opportunities into more points, leaving room for Seattle to stay within reach.

Seattle clawed back into the game in the second half, aided by a dramatic 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Laviska Shenault Jr. This play shifted the momentum and trimmed San Francisco’s lead to 23-10. Shortly afterward, Kenneth Walker III added a rushing touchdown, further closing the gap to 23-17. Special teams lapses and injuries to key players like running back Jordan Mason, who was forced to leave the game early, left the 49ers vulnerable and searching for answers.

The 49ers’ defense rose to the occasion in crucial moments, with Renardo Green intercepting a poorly thrown ball from Geno Smith intended for DK Metcalf. The interception allowed San Francisco to regain control and extend their lead. Kittle’s second touchdown of the game provided a cushion, but Seattle responded with a touchdown pass from Smith to Tyler Lockett, keeping the game within reach at 29-24 with under two minutes remaining.

A pivotal moment came late in the game when Isaac Guerendo, filling in for the injured Mason, broke free for a 76-yard run that set up a game-sealing touchdown by Kyle Juszczyk. This final scoring drive ensured the 49ers would leave no room for a Seahawks comeback. Guerendo’s performance was crucial in alleviating concerns about the team’s running back depth with Christian McCaffrey still sidelined.

Defensively, the 49ers excelled in limiting Seattle’s ground game, holding them to just 52 rushing yards. San Francisco’s defensive unit showcased its physicality and ability to disrupt Seattle’s offensive rhythm. Despite allowing over 300 passing yards from Smith, they created key turnovers and delivered impactful plays, including a late-game sack by Sam Okuayinonu. The Seahawks’ inability to sustain drives and capitalize on opportunities underscored the 49ers’ defensive dominance.

49ers Dominate Seahawks in Convincing Win but Highlight Areas Needing Improvement
49ers Dominate Seahawks in Convincing Win but Highlight Areas Needing Improvement

Statistically, the 49ers outperformed Seattle across the board. They gained a total of 483 yards compared to Seattle’s 358, with a particularly significant advantage in rushing yards. Guerendo led the ground game with 99 rushing yards, while Kittle and Samuel were standouts in the passing attack. Seattle’s Geno Smith showed flashes of potential but was ultimately hindered by turnovers and missed opportunities.

This win bolstered the 49ers’ standing in the NFC West and reaffirmed their status as a team to beat in the conference. However, the game also revealed areas requiring attention, particularly their red zone efficiency and special teams reliability. San Francisco’s three early losses this season may complicate their pursuit of the NFC’s top playoff seed, but their performance against Seattle provided a reminder of their talent and resilience.

For Seattle, the loss highlighted ongoing struggles against their division rival and the challenges of competing at an elite level. While the Seahawks showed some fight, particularly in the second half, their inability to contain the 49ers’ offense and their own miscues ultimately sealed their fate. The defeat extended their losing streak to San Francisco, leaving them searching for solutions to reverse this trend.

The 49ers’ victory against the Seahawks showcased their strengths as a balanced and formidable team capable of imposing their will on opponents. While they are not without flaws, their performance reaffirmed their position as a serious contender in the NFC. The win also reinforced their dominance over the Seahawks, who continue to struggle in this divisional rivalry. As the season progresses, the 49ers will aim to build on this momentum while addressing areas for improvement to solidify their status as one of the league’s best teams.

Seahawks receive positive updates on injured QB Geno Smith as they regroup following their loss

Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks received some good news a day after their disappointing loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Coach Mike Macdonald said on Monday that tests on Smith’s right knee showed no major injury and he was hopeful that the veteran quarterback would be ready for next weekend’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.

“We’re fortunate,” Macdonald said. “A lot of positive, optimistic signs coming out of the tests. Geno’s a beast, man. He’s in here working out in the morning, working through it. I know he’s still feeling it, but this guy is tough as nails and hopefully we’ll see him practice throughout the week, and optimistic that he’ll be ready for the game.”

If Smith is able to play, it would be another twist in an unpredictable season for the Seahawks, who entered Sunday night’s game on a four-game winning streak and in first place in the NFC West — only to lose 30-13 to the Packers.

Geno Smith throws in the 1st half

Seattle now finds itself tied with the rising Los Angeles Rams at the top of the division. Even the Seahawks’ famous home crowd, the “12s,” took a hit, as Packers fans loudly cheered “Go Pack Go,” making Lumen Field feel more like Lambeau Field.

The Packers dominated the Seattle offensive line, sacking Smith and backup Sam Howell seven times, while their offense took advantage of a Seahawks defense that had been strong during the winning streak.

In addition to Smith, center Olu Oluwatimi was also hurt, making things even harder for Macdonald in the final three games.

“I thought just in general you’ve got to give Green Bay a lot of credit,” the first-year coach said. “I thought they outcoached us. We didn’t have a good enough plan in all three phases. I’m responsible for that, and frankly didn’t play good enough. Didn’t do the things we been doing that have won us games.”

49ers Stay Undefeated with Strong Win Over Seahawks, Dominating on Both Sides of the Ball

The San Francisco 49ers continued their strong start to the 2024 season with a 25-10 victory over the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field in Week 3. The win kept the 49ers undefeated and solidified their dominance in the NFC West. Their success was driven by a stout defense and efficient offense, led by quarterback Brock Purdy. Despite Seattle’s early lead, the 49ers’ adjustments and offensive execution were too much for the Seahawks to overcome.

Seattle opened the game with a strong first-quarter performance, taking a 7-0 lead after rookie quarterback Tanner Pittman connected with tight end Noah Fant on a 43-yard touchdown pass. However, the 49ers quickly regrouped, with their defense applying heavy pressure and stifling Seattle’s offense for the remainder of the game. San Francisco managed to shut down any further scoring threats by the Seahawks.

In the second quarter, Purdy took control, leading the 49ers to a 10-7 halftime lead. He threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Aiyuk, followed by two field goals from kicker Jake Moody. Although Seattle’s Jason Myers hit a 54-yard field goal to keep the game close, the 49ers’ balanced offensive attack and solid defense gave them the advantage heading into halftime.

The second half was dominated by the 49ers. Purdy threw another touchdown, this time a 15-yard pass to Christian McCaffrey, and the defense wreaked havoc on Seattle’s offense, sacking Pittman six times. Moody added two more field goals, and Aiyuk sealed the win with a 7-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter. The 49ers’ defense was relentless, led by Nick Bosa, who recorded 2.5 sacks.

Key individual performances included Purdy’s efficient outing with 199 yards and three touchdowns, McCaffrey’s all-around effort with 99 rushing yards and 71 receiving yards, and Aiyuk’s two-touchdown game. On defense, Bosa led the charge with 2.5 sacks, and Fred Warner contributed both a sack and two tackles. For Seattle, Pittman struggled under pressure, while Fant’s early touchdown was the only highlight of their offense. The Seahawks will next face the Houston Texans on the road, while the 49ers host the Indianapolis Colts.

Seahawks QB Geno Smith leaves the game with a knee injury against Green Bay and is set to have tests done

An unfortunate hit ended quarterback Geno Smith’s night and could have serious consequences for the Seahawks’ playoff chances.

Smith left Seattle’s 30-13 loss to Green Bay on Sunday night after injuring his right knee. He was replaced by Sam Howell midway through the third quarter. The injury hurt the Seahawks’ attempt to come back and seriously affected their hopes for an NFC West title.

They are now tied for first in the division with the Los Angeles Rams, who had already beaten the Seahawks earlier this season and will host them for their final game of the season.

Smith will have scans done on Monday to find out the full extent of the injury.

“It’s tough,” linebacker Ernest Jones IV said. “Geno’s the heartbeat of this offense, the heartbeat of this team and one of our leaders. So obviously, you don’t want to see him get hurt. But we’ve got confidence in Sam, confidence in the guys behind him. So, I pray everything is OK with Geno. But we’ve got to be ready to go.”

Smith was injured by a low hit from linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, who rolled over Smith’s leg. Smith tried to walk off the field but went down again. He got up and limped to the sideline, where he threw his helmet. A short time later, he walked to the locker room with trainers.

Seattle coach Mike Macdonald said it didn’t look like there was any serious damage to Smith’s right knee. Smith later returned to the sideline with an ice pack held in place by a bandage. Macdonald said the team thought about letting him return to the game, but a late turnover made it clear the game was out of reach.

Geno Smith throws in the 1st half

Howell, who was acquired in a trade with Washington in the offseason, completed 5 of 14 passes for 24 yards with one interception. He led one touchdown drive.

Smith entered the game ranking second in the NFL in attempts, completions, and passing yards. He was on pace to break all of Seattle’s single-season passing records, which he set last year.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Geno, and just watching him through his career how he’s reinvented himself,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “And he’s playing really good football — I mean, you’re not the second-ranked passing leader in this game for no reason.”

Before getting hurt, Smith struggled. He threw his fourth end-zone interception of the season, tying Jameis Winston of the Browns for the most in the league, when Carrington Valentine intercepted him late in the first quarter. Smith completed 15 of 19 passes for 149 yards and the interception, and Seattle was down 20-6 when he left the game.

Howell said he would be ready to play if needed when the Seahawks face the Minnesota Vikings next Sunday.

“I prepare every week like I’m going to start,” Howell said. “But if I am playing, just getting those reps in practice will be important, and just getting the whole week to get ready to go will be a big thing and I’ve got to make sure I’m doing the right things to prepare myself for Sunday.”

Jordan Love passes for two touchdowns as the Packers defeat the Seahawks 30-13

Romeo Doubs made an unlikely catch for his second touchdown of the night from Jordan Love, securing a big win for the Packers and bringing them closer to making the playoffs.

Love threw for 229 yards and two touchdowns to Doubs, and the Green Bay Packers ended the Seattle Seahawks’ four-game winning streak with a 30-13 victory on Sunday night.

The second touchdown catch was especially impressive, as Doubs grabbed the ball while falling to the ground and tightly covered by Seattle’s Devon Witherspoon with 4:59 remaining. This play led to loud “Go Pack Go!” chants from the Packers’ fans at Lumen Field.

“The couple drives before that, we just felt like we weren’t getting much out of it, you know, we weren’t executing at that high level and making those plays we were making,” Love said. “To kind of have some of those drives stall out and then to put a drive down the field and finish with that touchdown out there — Romeo making a great catch — definitely helps you be able to breathe a little bit better.”

Josh Jacobs ran for 94 yards and a touchdown for the Packers (10-4), who have now won eight of their last 10 games. Brandon McManus also kicked three field goals.

Geno Smith gets injured in the 2nd half

The Seahawks (8-6) lost their quarterback Geno Smith to a knee injury in the third quarter.

Smith was hit low by Packers linebacker Edgerrin Cooper and tossed his helmet to the ground as he limped off the field. Sam Howell replaced him, despite having only one previous snap for Seattle.

Smith completed 15 of 19 passes for 149 yards with an interception, while Howell went 5 of 14 for 24 yards and also threw an interception.

The Packers’ two losses in their last 10 games were to NFC North-leading Detroit, including a 34-31 defeat on Dec. 5, meaning the division title is likely out of reach for Green Bay. They have not yet secured a playoff spot, but the team is getting close to achieving their goal.

“I like where we’re at,” Love said. “We’ve just got to keep figuring out ways to get better, to keep pushing each other and find ways to get these wins to end the season off. But I like where we’re at.”

With the loss, the Seahawks are now tied for first place with the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC West, and Smith’s injury could affect their chances of winning the division. He will have scans on Monday, but coach Mike Macdonald said the knee appeared structurally sound.

“We know what type of team we are. We know what the goal is, what we’re trying to accomplish. Playoff ball is just putting the emphasis on what we said early in the year that we wanted to get done,” Seattle linebacker Ernest Jones IV said. “That’s win the division, go into the playoffs, get a home playoff game, one or two, or whatever the case may be.”

Love finished 20 of 27 passing, and Doubs, who missed the last two games due to concussion protocol, had three catches for 40 yards.

Smith was intercepted in the end zone during the first half, and the Seahawks were down 20-3 at halftime. Green Bay scored on all four of its first-half possessions.

An unnecessary roughness penalty on Seattle’s Riq Woolen put the Packers on the Seattle 28-yard line on their first possession. Jacobs’ 1-yard touchdown run capped that drive.

The Packers went up 14-0 when Love threw a 13-yard pass to Doubs, who managed to drag two defenders into the end zone before waving at a television camera.

The Seahawks got on the board with Jason Myers’ 48-yard field goal, but McManus answered with a 38-yarder for Green Bay.

Seattle moved to the Green Bay 12-yard line, but Smith’s pass intended for Noah Fant was intercepted in the end zone by Carrington Valentine, who made his first career pick. This was Smith’s 13th interception of the season and his fourth in the end zone.

Woolen was penalized for pass interference on Doubs during Green Bay’s final possession of the half, but the Packers settled for McManus’ 21-yard field goal.

Seattle showed some hope early in the fourth quarter when Zach Charbonnet ran for a 24-yard touchdown, cutting the Packers’ lead to 23-13. But just three plays later, Doubs secured the win for Green Bay with a beautiful 22-yard throw to him. Doubs got his elbow down in the back of the end zone, ensuring the Packers’ victory.

Connor Williams Announces Unexpected Retirement from NFL, Seahawks Face Challenges Ahead

Connor Williams, the 27-year-old center for the Seattle Seahawks, has announced his retirement from the NFL. Williams had joined the Seahawks in August 2024 on a one-year contract worth $6 million after being placed on injured reserve by the Miami Dolphins in December 2023 due to an ACL tear sustained in a game against the Tennessee Titans. While his retirement comes shortly after his injury, it was confirmed by Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald that the decision was made for personal reasons, not related to his knee injury.

Macdonald shared that Williams’ retirement decision was made for personal matters, which he chose not to elaborate on. The Seahawks coach expressed understanding and respect for Williams’ wishes, emphasizing that their conversations about his retirement would remain private. He also noted that Williams had only communicated his decision earlier that week, indicating that it had been a gradual process for the player.

Williams started his NFL career in 2018 with the Dallas Cowboys before moving to the Miami Dolphins for two seasons. After his time with the Dolphins, he signed with the Seahawks for the 2024 season. Williams is eligible for an NFL retirement plan, which fully vests after three years of service, meaning his time in the league qualifies him for benefits upon retirement.

The unexpected announcement of Williams’ retirement led to various reactions from Seahawks fans on social media. Some fans expressed frustration and disappointment, particularly given the timing of the decision during a challenging season. Others speculated that Williams’ decision might stem from personal struggles, with a few expressing sympathy for his situation and the difficulties he had faced in his career.

Williams’ retirement comes just days before a crucial matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, which is vital for the Seahawks’ hopes of turning their season around. After starting the season with three straight wins, the Seahawks have been struggling, winning only one of their last six games. The game against the 49ers presents an important opportunity for the team to regain momentum and improve their record.

In response to Williams’ departure, the Seahawks will have Olu Oluwatimi take over the center position. Oluwatimi, who joined the team in 2023, played college football at Virginia and Michigan. Jalen Sundell, an undrafted free agent from North Dakota State, will serve as the backup to Oluwatimi. The Seahawks now face the challenge of adjusting to the loss of Williams as they continue their season with several key games ahead.

DK Metcalf is excited to block as the Seahawks carry their winning streak into their Sunday night game against the Packers

Seattle Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf is perfectly fine with not having the ball, as it gives him a chance to show off his blocking skills.

“I just look at it as a sign of respect that I’ve gained from other defensive coordinators and just continue to do my job with it as blocking or being a decoy,” said the two-time Pro Bowler.

While opposing defenses focus on Metcalf, other parts of Seattle’s offense have stepped up during its four-game winning streak. The Seahawks (8-5) are leading the NFC West as they prepare for Sunday night’s game against the Green Bay Packers (9-4).

Geno Smith’s new go-to target is second-year receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who needs 89 more receiving yards to reach 1,000 yards in his first season.

Smith-Njigba has 75 catches for 911 yards and five touchdowns, while Metcalf, often facing double coverage, has 54 catches for 812 yards and two touchdowns.

DK Metcalf scores a touchdown in the 1st half

Metcalf says he feels like a “proud parent or a big brother” when he watches Smith-Njigba’s success.

Seattle’s offense also got a boost from the running game in a 30-18 win over the Arizona Cardinals last weekend. Zach Charbonnet, filling in for the injured Kenneth Walker III, ran for a career-high 134 yards and two touchdowns.

The Seahawks are up against another strong team in the Packers (9-4), who have won seven of their last nine games.

Green Bay’s two losses in that stretch came against the NFC-best Detroit Lions (12-1), including a 34-31 loss to Detroit on Dec. 5, which means the Packers are unlikely to win the NFC North title.

The Packers are in a good position for a playoff spot, but they likely won’t secure it this weekend. They would need a win, a loss or tie from the Atlanta Falcons, and a tie between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers.

Metcalf, who learned how to block from his father, former Chicago Bears offensive lineman Terrence Metcalf, takes his blocking seriously to stand out from other receivers.

His focus is simple when he’s double-teamed and the ball goes to someone else.

“Trying to block my (butt) off and trying to get pancakes on defensive backs,” he said.

Charbonnet rushes for a career-best 134 yards and two touchdowns as the Seahawks, leading the NFC West, defeat the Cardinals 30-18

In the final seconds of the fourth quarter, with the game already decided, Seattle’s defense kept up the pressure, chasing Arizona’s Kyler Murray across the field. Murray eventually slid to the ground for a sack as the clock ran out.

The Seahawks have proven they have a strong team. Now they are aiming to become even better.

Their 30-18 win over the Cardinals on Sunday shows they are heading in the right direction. Seattle (8-5) has won four straight games and holds a one-game lead in the NFC West.

“We didn’t want them to score,” linebacker Ernest Jones IV said about the final play. “We want to be dominant. And you can’t just be dominant at certain times, you have to be dominant throughout the game.”

After a slow start, the Seahawks controlled the final 3 1/2 quarters. Zach Charbonnet rushed for a career-high 134 yards and two touchdowns, Geno Smith threw for 233 yards and a touchdown, and the defense made two key interceptions in the first quarter.

The Seahawks completed a season sweep of the Cardinals. They have won seven straight games against their division rivals.

Seattle shook off an early deficit to lead 24-10 at halftime. Charbonnet broke a tackle at midfield and sprinted 51 yards for a touchdown with 2:36 left in the second quarter.

Charbonnet, 23, took advantage of a bigger role after starting running back Kenneth Walker III got injured. Charbonnet also caught seven passes for 59 yards.

“It’s tough to tackle that guy in the open field,” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said. “He’s got speed and power.”

Smith completed 24 of 30 passes and wasn’t sacked.

“Dude, I thought the (offensive line) was phenomenal,” Smith said. “The way they played, we can win every game we play.”

The Cardinals (6-7) were hoping to share first place with a win, but instead, they’ve now lost three straight games and are fading in the playoff race. Murray threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw interceptions on back-to-back passes in the first quarter.

“It’s the first time in my career that I’ve had two picks in back-to-back games,” Murray said. “It’s on me. Just put it on me.”

The Cardinals got close, cutting the lead to 27-18 late in the third quarter with a 2-yard underhand pass from Murray to James Conner. Murray also ran for the 2-point conversion.

Arizona had a chance to make it a one-possession game in the fourth quarter, but Chad Ryland’s 40-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright. It was Ryland’s third straight game with a missed field goal.

“I’ve got to find some answers to get us going a little bit, because we haven’t played great the past couple weeks,” second-year Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon said. “That falls on me. I’ve got to go back to the drawing board tomorrow, get these things corrected, put them in better position, and we’ve got to win a game.”

The Seahawks took a 10-7 lead in the first quarter with back-to-back big plays on both defense and offense. Jones picked off Murray and gave Seattle the ball at the Arizona 19.

“It was kind of right to me, so I don’t know what he saw,” Jones said. “But it happens.”

Smith capitalized on the next play, finding Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a 19-yard touchdown.

Murray was intercepted again on the next possession, this time by Coby Bryant. Seattle took advantage of the good field position with Charbonnet running for a 1-yard touchdown and a 17-7 lead.

It was a surprising turn of events for the Cardinals, who had controlled the early drives. They moved down the field on their opening possession, with Murray connecting with Michael Wilson on a perfectly executed play-action pass for a 41-yard touchdown to take a 7-0 lead.
