Travis Kelce, the 35-year-old tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, addressed the cheating accusations following his team’s controversial playoff victory over the Houston Texans. The allegations gained attention after hip-hop star Lil Wayne criticized the Chiefs, claiming they were benefiting from favorable officiating.
Lil Wayne’s Accusations
On an episode of the New Heights podcast, Travis and his brother Jason Kelce discussed the accusations. Lil Wayne had taken to social media to express his frustration, writing, “I hate the cheating azz chiefs,” and later adding, “It’s not even impressive when u cheat and then clearly try to cheat. Just win baby.”
Jason Kelce mentioned Lil Wayne’s post during the podcast, pointing out the rapper’s strong words about the Chiefs. Travis jokingly responded, “Shout out to Tuchie man,” in reference to Lil Wayne’s nickname.
Khalen Saunders Weighs In
Jason also brought up a post from Khalen Saunders, a defensive tackle for the New Orleans Saints. Saunders admitted some of the referee calls during the game were questionable but also pointed out how open Travis Kelce was during the game, saying the Texans “left Travis ‘wide booty butt nekkid open for 4 quarters.'” Travis confirmed Saunders’ comment, saying, “They did… They left me butt-naked open.”

Referee Controversies
Despite the accusations, Travis chose not to comment directly on some of the controversial calls made during the game. When asked by Jason about his opinion on two specific calls, he chose to “plead the fifth.”
In the aftermath of the Chiefs’ 23-14 win over the Texans, Will Anderson Jr., a player for the Texans, admitted that his team had adopted an “us versus the refs” mentality, acknowledging the challenges of playing against both the Chiefs and the officiating.
Texans Coach’s Comments
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans echoed Anderson’s sentiments, stating, “We knew going into this game, man, it was us versus everybody.” He added that his team couldn’t afford to make the mistakes they did in the game.
Chiefs Move On to Face the Bills
With the victory, the Chiefs are advancing to the AFC Championship game, where they will face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, January 26, at Arrowhead Stadium, with a kickoff time of 6 p.m. ET. The Chiefs are aiming for their third consecutive Super Bowl appearance after winning the last two championships.
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs once again saw Travis Kelce step up as they entered the postseason, with the star tight end becoming what Mahomes called “Playoff Trav.”
“This is what he lives for, is playing in these moments, having the chance to make big-time plays,” Mahomes said after Kelce played a key role in the Chiefs’ 23-14 win over the Houston Texans in the divisional round of the playoffs. Kelce was responsible for almost half of the Chiefs’ receptions and more than half of their receiving yards in the game.
“He goes out there and does that, and it seems like he does it in every single playoff game,” Mahomes added. “He doesn’t let the moment be bigger than what it is. He just goes out there and executes at a high level just like he does in a regular-season game. He just does that with a little bit higher intensity.”
Kelce caught seven passes for 117 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown reception from Mahomes in the fourth quarter. It was his first 100-yard game of the season and marked the ninth of his playoff career, setting an NFL record.
In fact, Kelce has exceeded his regular-season average for receiving yards per game in every playoff game since 2020. Against the Texans, he more than doubled his season average of 56 receiving yards per game.
Kelce couldn’t really explain why his playoff performances have been so successful. “I wish it was some type of switch or something like that that I just turned on in the playoffs,” he said.
Kelce was one of several Chiefs players who had not played since their Christmas Day win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, which secured the AFC’s top playoff seed. At 35 years old, Kelce said the long break before the playoffs helped him feel refreshed, and Mahomes agreed.
Patrick Mahomes (NFL)
“It helped Travis a ton just because he’s an older guy and he plays a very, very tough position on the body,” Mahomes said. “It’s not like he’s just sitting on the couch. He’s working out and kind of just taking those reps off, so for him it’s just been getting himself ready to go.
We’ve been practicing, we’ve been working at practice and then we go out there and he plays fast and takes his game to a new level.”
One of Kelce’s biggest plays in the game was a 49-yard catch that set up the Chiefs’ first touchdown. After catching the ball, he ran for 36 yards, most of which came as he avoided a defender who had an opportunity to tackle him right after the catch.
“It just felt good to finally make a guy miss this year,” Kelce said.
Kelce was eventually brought down at the Houston 6-yard line. Wide receiver Xavier Worthy pointed out that early in Kelce’s career, he would have likely scored a touchdown on that play. Kelce agreed.
As for evading defenders, Mahomes added, “Those tacklers that tackle him in the regular season don’t tackle him in the playoffs.”
The touchdown pass from Mahomes to Kelce gave the Chiefs a 20-12 lead. It marked the 20th career playoff touchdown connection between the two, but few of them have been as spectacular as this one. Mahomes found Kelce for the score while Mahomes was falling to the ground after being hit and seemingly about to be sacked.
Defensive tackle Chris Jones, who has been with the Chiefs for all 20 touchdown passes from Mahomes to Kelce, wasn’t surprised by the play. “Just when you think you’ve got them, you don’t,” Jones said.
Five years ago, after the Kansas City Chiefs made a thrilling comeback to defeat the San Francisco 49ers in their first Super Bowl appearance in fifty years, Chris Jones sat down for an interview. When asked about the future, the defensive tackle, who was entering free agency for the first time, had a confident response.
“Next year we’re coming back,” Jones said with a smile. “We’re coming back for a repeat.”
Now, the Chiefs are aiming for a three-peat, and Jones has been part of every step of it.
Instead of hitting free agency in January 2020, Jones signed a long-term contract after being franchised. Then, last March, he signed an even bigger deal, which could see him play his entire career in Kansas City. Jones is now one of six veteran players who will be participating in their seventh consecutive AFC championship game when the Chiefs face the Buffalo Bills this Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.
“I’m getting old,” Jones, 30, laughed. “It’s fun, though. It’s a challenge. Takes a lot of hard work, commitment, a lot of belief, a lot of encouragement throughout the year. A lot of unselfish play amongst the team to continue to do that.”
Jones added, “We had this message in chapel about climbing the mountaintop. You don’t want to stay up there because you can’t really breathe. The air is too thin. So you go back down. But the joy is climbing to the mountaintop.”
Few teams have managed to knock the Chiefs off their peak.
They’ve won four of the past six AFC championship games. Both of their losses were in overtime: to the Patriots in 2019, the first year of their title-game streak, and to the Bengals three years ago. When the Chiefs have made it to the Super Bowl, only Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have stopped Patrick Mahomes and the team from winning the Lombardi Trophy.
Mahomes is another of the six Chiefs players who have participated in all seven conference championship games. The first came in his first year as the starting quarterback, when he set records on his way to winning his first of two NFL MVP awards.
In that AFC championship game against the Patriots, Mahomes threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, but the Chiefs lost. Mahomes still talks about how that loss in Arrowhead Stadium motivated him in future seasons.
Patrick Mahomes speaks at the news conference
“Obviously, you want to win three in a row,” Mahomes said. “But building those memories with the guys and with the community every single year is special. When I look back at all the different Super Bowls we’ve won, I look back at special moments that we’ve had and special games that we’ve had. We’ll try to do that the same this year.
“I mean, it has been a fun run up to this point,” Mahomes continued, “but we want to get to that ultimate goal.”
Many of the key players on this team know what it takes to reach that goal.
In addition to Jones and Mahomes, four-time All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce has been there for all seven AFC title games. Kelce had seven catches for 117 yards and a touchdown in the Chiefs’ divisional win over the Houston Texans last Saturday. Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi, long snapper James Winchester, and kicker Harrison Butker have also been around for all seven championship games.
While the Chiefs have had other stars over the years, like Tyrann Mathieu, who was the leader of the defense at the start of their seven-year run, and Tyreek Hill, who played a major role in their explosive offense, the six players who have been part of every AFC title game have combined for 945 games with the Chiefs, including 121 playoff games. Those playoff games are particularly significant, as a single loss could have ended the Chiefs’ remarkable streak.
“There is something to be said for that experience, especially when the calendar reaches the end of January,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “The experience helps, especially with some of the younger guys, to be able to talk to them and tell them about the urgency of this thing.
It’s single elimination. That’s easier said than putting that in your brain and getting yourself right for every snap that you have at practice, to practice hard and be aggressive with. You just have to make sure you stay really focused and don’t let the distractions in there the best you can.”
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had a standout performance on Saturday, impressing pop star Taylor Swift, who was watching from a suite with WNBA player Caitlin Clark. Kelce caught seven passes for 117 yards and a touchdown, helping the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Houston Texans 23-14. This win sent the Chiefs to their seventh consecutive AFC championship game.
Kelce, who has often elevated his game during the playoffs, shared his thoughts after the game: “I feel like if you’re going to step out here on the football field, you’ve always got something to prove.” Despite having a quieter regular season compared to his usual standard, Kelce stepped up in the postseason.
He added, “I wish it was something like it was just a flip of the switch and I could just turn it on like that. But I think it was everybody in that building, all week long, all, really, the past two to three weeks figuring out how to get our bodies the best rest and ready for the playoffs for a run like this. And, man, we came out firing on all cylinders today. That felt really good.”
Kelce’s performance kept Swift and Clark cheering throughout the game. Clark, a Chiefs fan, wore a red parka, and Swift, arriving about two hours before the game in cold weather, was dressed in a full Chanel outfit, which included a black-and-white tweed jacket, a quarter-zip romper, and pearl accessories.
Swift’s relationship with Kelce began last season after he invited her to a game against the Bears. Since then, the two have been seen together frequently, and their relationship has been followed closely by the media. Swift has spent more time in Kansas City lately after finishing her Eras Tour last month.
Taylor Swift watches the game in the 1st half
The Chiefs earned a first-round bye in the playoffs after finishing the regular season with a 15-2 record, securing the No. 1 seed. With their win over the Texans, they are now one step away from making NFL history by winning three consecutive Super Bowls.
Swift attended the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory in Las Vegas last February and is expected to follow them again if they make it to the big game this year.
Kelce, focused on the next challenge, said, “Right now, this one was great. We’re going to enjoy this one tonight. But the task at hand is going to be that AFC championship. You don’t get a three-peat by looking past that.”
In the game against the Texans, Kelce set several records. It was his 14th consecutive playoff game with at least 70 yards receiving, and his 15th game in a row with at least five catches, both of which are NFL records.
He also extended his playoff record for receptions to 172 and broke a tie with Jerry Rice for the most playoff games with 100 or more yards receiving, now having nine such games in his 12-year career.
Kelce is close to breaking two more records. He needs 226 more yards to surpass Jerry Rice’s postseason record of 2,245 yards, and he needs three more touchdown receptions to break Rice’s record of 22 career postseason touchdown catches.
“It’s playoff Trav. He’s a leader, man,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who remains undefeated (7-0) in the divisional round of the playoffs. “This is what he lives for, playing in these moments and making big-time plays.”
Jason Kelce chatted with the Linc — yes, the concrete and steel of the Philadelphia Eagles’ home stadium answered him with a pep talk — before the retired All-Pro lineman toured the city in his Eagles helmet car all while dressed in his Super Bowl parade Mummer’s costume. He parked the souped-up golf cart and tossed the keys ZZ Top-style ahead of the first day of his new job.
He then dropped a profanity into the start of his monologue.
Roll out The Chug Machine, fly, F-bombs, fly and save a seat for Sir Charles because the latest host crashing late-night television is a bit more raw than the traditional suit-and-tie joke tellers.
Jason Kelce threw a late-night bash — and he brought his wife, his parents, a fan with a Phillie Phanatic tattoo inked on his navel, a Philly band and an uncensored (at least on stage) take on sports for the first of five episodes of “They Call It Late Night with Jason Kelce” on ESPN.
Here’s Kelce! “I used to love watching late-night TV growing up,” Kelce said.
Kelce quickly proved there’s space for another JK in late night — Kelce disappeared into a portal where he walked out into (a pantsless) Jimmy Kimmel’s office to ask for hosting advice — and moderated a loose panel of sports topics with guests Charles Barkley, rapper and actor Lil Dicky, and NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger.
Kelce said he received real guidance from Kimmel on the art of hosting.
“He sat me down and really explained some things that he thought would accelerate this process for me,” Kelce said.

Kelce bantered with the guests during commercial breaks and took questions from a few of about 300 fans in the audience. When a fan from New Jersey invited Kelce to his wedding, the retired star quipped, “I don’t go into New Jersey.”
Eagles fan and Penn State student Caleb Tinley learned only two days earlier he was randomly selected for a pair of free tickets and was first in line around noon to get a good seat for the taping. He’s a fan of the “New Heights” podcast Kelce co-hosts with his brother, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and figured the TV show was as close to that experience as he could get.
“Ever since he had that speech at the Super Bowl, he became a Philly legend,” Tinley said.
The 37-year-old Kelce — who retired in March after a 13-year career spent entirely with the Eagles — has watched his profile balloon in retirement. The Super Bowl winner already hosted the podcast but has become a prolific pitchman hawking everything from chicken wings to soup, to laundry detergent to cereal, to hoagies to his own beer company.
Kelce was already omnipresent on television and social media, so what was one more gig to add to his resume?
So “Late Night” was born.
Kelce is in the first year of a multiyear agreement with ESPN and already appears on the network’s “Monday Night Countdown” show. The retired center taking center stage on a late-night staple such as a talk show — no Letterman, though he did wear his Cleveland Heights letterman’s jacket — seemed a natural extension into his growing entertainment profile.
The show’s title is a homage to “They Call It Pro Football,” which was NFL Films’ first full-length film in 1967. NFL Films originated in Philadelphia and founders Ed and Steve Sabol are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It also featured the voice of John Facenda, whose tone was imitated on the show by Kelce and his panel as they narrated modern NFL highlights.
“I knew I wanted NFL Films because I felt like we wanted to make a show that celebrated the NFL landscape,” Kelce said. “Not just from current players and current games, but of past games and past players. Past announcers. NFL fans and the subculture of the NFL. We wanted to create a show that really embraced all of that.”
The Philadelphia-based band Snacktime provided the music. Kylie Kelce, fresh off dethroning Joe Rogan as the No. 1 podcast on the Spotify charts, served as the foul-mouthed sidekick from her perch in “Kylie’s Korner.”
Kelce’s expletives in the monologue were no momentary brain cramp as he transitioned from locker room talk to cable television. Kelce and his wife peppered their conversations with profanity — this is late night, after all — and tried to make the relationship seem as real in the studio as it is at home, where the couple raise three daughters, with a fourth expected this year.

“We really wanted the language to be real and authentic to me,” Kelce said after the show. “We overdid it a little bit today to kind of prep the audience on what to expect. I think the F-bombs was the one thing where I was told, we might want to be a little bit cautious there but, listen, we want to give you range to be who you are.”
The debut one-hour “Late Night” episode was taped Friday in front of a live audience from Philly concert venue Union Transfer. The show aired at 1 a.m. EST on ESPN and will tape the next four Friday nights. The schedule coincides with the last week of the NFL’s regular season and the playoffs.
Comedian Seth Herzog warmed up the crowd and joked the event had a no-phones policy so Kelce wouldn’t smash them like he did in a viral moment at Penn State.
The Philly slant couldn’t be missed — they filmed a bit where a female fan spewed bites of a hoagie into the mouth of, well, Jason Kelce from the future, and Barkley played to the crowd when he picked the Eagles to win the Super Bowl — but the real Kelce said he wanted a show that would appeal to fans nationwide.
Smash hit or not, there are no promises from ESPN of anything beyond the limited run.
“We really just wanted to try something fun to do and I think everybody was on board to experiment and see what happens,” Kelce said. “I do think there’s room for this, especially within the football season.”
After Kelce participated in a skit with parents Ed and Donna, celebrated with a fastest beer-chugging winner and shared a cold one at the bar with Eagles great Harold Carmichael, he broke down the show the same way he would as an Eagles player in the postgame locker room.
“It’s game day,” Kelce said. “Plenty of errors, just like a game. Plenty of things to clean up. But just so happy with how it went.”
As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for another road matchup against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon, fans are not only focused on the game but also on tight end Travis Kelce’s pregame appearance.
While the matchup seems lopsided on paper, the spotlight remains on Kelce, especially after the Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season last week and Kelce delivered one of his most underwhelming performances in recent memory.
How does Kelce plan to bounce back? Step one: look sharp. The 35-year-old accomplished that effortlessly with his pregame outfit, which was highlighted in a slick video shared by the NFL’s social media team.
The footage captured Kelce arriving at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, in his signature style.
For those closely following Kelce’s wardrobe, his ensemble likely came as no surprise. Known for his fashion consistency, Kelce traditionally repeats his Saturday travel outfits for Sunday road games.
He also coordinates his footwear with the NFL schedule, exclusively showcasing sneakers from the legendary Air Jordan line.
On this occasion, Kelce sported a WE11DONE Blue Check Anorak Half-Zip Shirt ($1,525), Barena Caorloto Trousers ($360), and a Jacquemus The Bordino Bucket Hat ($365), as noted by the @StyleByKelce account. Yet, the highlight of his outfit was the sneakers: the Air Jordan 12 “Cherry” colorway.

Although the “Cherry” Air Jordan 12 is not one of the rare vintage pieces Kelce has been known to wear, it’s still a respectable choice.
Originally released in 1997, the “Cherry” colorway underwent retro releases in 2009 and again in 2023.
If Kelce’s pair is from the latest iteration, it would have launched in October 2023 for $210 and now carries an average resale price of $226 on StockX.
The “Cherry” Air Jordan 12 features a white quilted leather upper contrasted by Varsity Red pebbled leather mudguards. Accents like the black Jumpman logo and interior detailing complete the look.
These sneakers hold significant history, as they were first worn by Michael Jordan during the Chicago Bulls’ iconic second three-peat.
With his footwear choice, Kelce may be looking to channel some of Jordan’s legendary determination to rebound from adversity.
So far this season, Kelce has exclusively worn Air Jordan 11 cleats during games, blending athletic performance with timeless sneaker design.
Following the Kansas City Chiefs’ triumph over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game, Travis Kelce shared poignant moments with his close ones.
Amidst the on-field celebrations, Kelce exchanged heartfelt greetings with his brother Jason, a consistent presence at both of Kelce’s games since the Philadelphia Eagles exited the playoffs in the wild-card round.
The joyous occasion also saw Kelce celebrating with his girlfriend, Taylor Swift, who has become a regular attendee at Chiefs games throughout the season.
A postgame snapshot captured by NFL Films showcased Kelce sharing a touching moment with both Jason and Taylor Swift, emphasizing the bond and support from his loved ones.
Maintaining his postseason prowess, Kelce played a pivotal role for the Chiefs in Sunday’s game, amassing 116 receiving yards and scoring a touchdown on 11 receptions. His stellar performance played a crucial part in propelling the Chiefs to a second consecutive Super Bowl appearance.
Looking ahead, Kelce, alongside the Chiefs, is set to face the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl.
The 49ers secured their spot in the championship game by defeating the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship on Sunday. The upcoming Super Bowl marks Kansas City’s fourth appearance in five years, and the team aims to secure back-to-back championships.
As Kelce prepares for another Super Bowl showdown, he can count on the unwavering support of his dedicated companions, Jason and Taylor Swift. Their presence adds an extra layer of encouragement as the Chiefs strive for another historic victory.
Travis Kelce, the tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, has dismissed rumors of retirement after this season. Despite a down year in terms of performance, Kelce expressed his love for the game and his desire to continue playing. He emphasized the challenge of striving to be his best every day and stated that he had no intention of stopping anytime soon.
Kelce’s retirement talk originated from a June Vanity Fair profile where he discussed his plans for life after football. Outside of the game, Kelce has been involved in various endeavors such as commercials, hosting a podcast with his brother Jason Kelce, and even hosting “Saturday Night Live.” He also gained attention for his relationship with Taylor Swift, which made waves in pop culture.

While Kelce has a lot going on outside of football, he remains focused on the Chiefs’ upcoming wild-card game against the Miami Dolphins. He assured that this game won’t be his last and that he intends to fulfill his contract, which extends until the 2025 season.
Kelce acknowledged the opportunities he has had outside of sports, particularly in the entertainment industry. However, he believes that pursuing a new career path is still far down the road for him at this point in his career.
The Chiefs had a different journey this year, finishing with an 11-6 record, their highest loss total since 2017. They didn’t showcase the same explosiveness as in previous seasons. Nevertheless, their primary goal now is to secure a third Super Bowl ring.
Kelce emphasized that his legacy is tied to winning Super Bowls and being a dedicated teammate. He is focused on maintaining the right mindset and striving for success in pursuit of more championships.
Kansas City Chiefs standout Travis Kelce expressed strong opinions about the Pittsburgh media during the latest episode of his “New Heights” podcast with his elder brother, Jason Kelce, who plays as the center for the Philadelphia Eagles. The conversation revolved around the remarkable achievement of Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, who is on the verge of completing his 17th consecutive non-losing season, regardless of the outcome of the Week 18 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.
Despite the Steelers facing challenges throughout the season and holding a 9-7 record, some members of the Pittsburgh media had advocated for parting ways with Tomlin, either through a mid-season dismissal or a potential trade for assets. Travis strongly criticized such suggestions, labeling the media’s discussions as baseless and unintelligent.
Travis Kelce Slams Pittsburgh Media as ‘Jacka–es’ Over Mike Tomlin Criticism (Credits: Fansided)
“They were talking about firing him, what, seven weeks ago?” Jason inquired, prompting Travis to respond sharply, “The media’s so dumb. Why do we do the media? Bunch of Jacka–es. They are just a bunch of jacka–es. I’m just out here talking f—ing nonsense. He is one of the best coaches the NFL’s ever even seen, about to possibly get his 17th consecutive non-losing season. Jesus Christ.”
The brothers delved into reminiscing about their own lives 17 years ago, with Jason already playing college football at Cincinnati and Travis recalling his driver’s license suspension in Ohio. This comparison aimed to underscore the longevity of Tomlin’s successful tenure as the head coach of the Steelers since 2007.
Tomlin boasts an impressive career record of 172-100-2 in the regular season, amounting to a .639 winning percentage. Despite the challenges faced by the Steelers this season, including the midseason firing of offensive coordinator Matt Canada, they have navigated the tough AFC North division and have a chance at a playoff berth. A win over the AFC’s top-seeded Ravens could secure their spot in the postseason.
Travis and Jason acknowledged that, while their own teams are not in contention for playoff berths, they might find themselves cheering for Tomlin and the Steelers to succeed in reaching the postseason, potentially making skeptics in the media reconsider their earlier criticisms.
Kansas City Chiefs standout Travis Kelce is wasting no time in setting his goals for the upcoming year. On a special holiday edition of the “New Heights” podcast, co-hosted with his older brother, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, the 34-year-old tight end disclosed his rather predictable New Year’s resolution. The discussion started with a comment from Jason’s wife, Kylie Kelce, about social media’s influence on fitness goals. Travis chimed in, revealing his plan to cut bacon from his diet, eliciting surprised reactions from both Jason and Kylie.
However, as Travis tried to explain his decision, he admitted, amid a stutter, that he wasn’t entirely giving up bacon. Nevertheless, he committed to one lifestyle change: bidding farewell to mayonnaise. Travis declared, “I’ll probably never have mayo again. I’m over mayo, and I’m done with it.” Jason playfully pointed out that giving up mayo was not much of a sacrifice since it wasn’t something Travis typically indulged in.

Looking ahead to 2023, Kelce aims to finish the year on a positive note following the Chiefs’ 20-14 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Christmas Day. The upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals on New Year’s Eve, a rematch of the AFC championship game, is crucial for the Chiefs. Having lost three of their last four games, Kansas City is eager to secure its eighth consecutive AFC West title.
Despite the recent setbacks, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed confidence, stating, “We’re still in first place in the AFC West. We have one more game to win the division. We understand it’s not going to be easy. But if we continue to work, we win this game and go to the playoffs, we know we can do what we set out to do at the beginning of this season, and that’s got to the Super Bowl.”
Travis Kelce’s frustration with the offensive struggles of the Kansas City Chiefs was palpable during Monday’s loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, as he expressed his discontent by hurling his helmet on the sideline. In a recent episode of his “New Heights” podcast alongside his brother Jason, the star tight end acknowledged that the team collectively bears responsibility for the ongoing offensive issues.
“It’s not solely one individual’s fault,” Travis Kelce emphasized. “It’s not just me performing poorly. It’s not solely our inability to establish the run game. It’s not just a lack of synchronization in our passing game. Every member is part of this challenging situation. At different points, everyone has fallen short in being accountable.”
Travis Kelce
Throughout the season, the Chiefs (9-6) have struggled with inconsistent offensive play, marked by an alarming number of dropped passes (34), tying for the most offensive penalties (56), and ranking sixth in turnovers (26) in the NFL. Despite losing three of their last four games, they maintain a two-game lead in the AFC West and can secure the division title with a win against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
When asked by Jason how to address these issues, Travis stressed, “Everyone just needs to execute their responsibilities.”
In the first quarter of their recent 20-14 defeat to the Raiders, the Chiefs posted a dismal minus-18 yards of offense, marking the lowest opening-period total for any NFL team in 12 seasons. Las Vegas capitalized on defensive touchdowns, scoring one on a fumble return and another on an interception.
Kelce acknowledged the team’s potential for a high-powered offense but highlighted the need to eliminate self-inflicted setbacks, such as penalties and unfavorable down-and-distance situations. He suggested additional team communication, extra post-practice repetitions, and enhanced film room collaboration to foster better cohesion.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes defended the visible frustration within the team, seeing it as a sign of caring and a desire to improve collectively. He emphasized that such emotions indicate a commitment to winning and bettering themselves for the team.
Kelce admitted regret over his helmet-throwing incident, acknowledging Coach Andy Reid’s attempt to elicit the best from him. Reid, in turn, commended Kelce’s performance after the incident and emphasized the importance of channeling emotions in the right direction. Reid noted that the team’s tolerance for underperformance has diminished due to past success and emphasized the need to address and rectify their ongoing challenges.
Mahomes and Kelce Lose Their Cool in Battle Against Raiders
On Christmas Day, the anticipated festive joy for Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce turned into a challenging matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. The dynamic duo found themselves grappling with the formidable Raiders defense, leading to visible expressions of frustration on the sideline.
Early in the game, Mahomes was captured passionately addressing his offensive line on the sidelines. The Chiefs struggled initially, punting on their first three drives and only reaching the scoreboard in the second quarter when Isiah Pacheco’s 12-yard direct snap resulted in a touchdown, putting Kansas City ahead 7-3.

However, the Chiefs’ struggles persisted as they turned the ball over on consecutive drives, resulting in Raiders touchdowns. Bilal Nichols, a Raiders defensive lineman, recovered a fumble for a touchdown, and Jack Jones intercepted Mahomes, returning the pick 33 yards for another touchdown. By halftime, the Raiders held a 17-7 lead.
Kelce, too, felt the mounting frustrations, evident when he left the field with his helmet in hand, proceeding to slam it into the watercooler stand. As the Chiefs faced adversity, Las Vegas capitalized on the situation, maintaining a 17-7 lead at halftime.
The statistics reflected the challenging first half for the Chiefs, with Mahomes completing 13 of 21 passes for 97 yards and an interception, while Kelce managed four catches for 42 yards. This was a stark contrast to their previous victory over the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium, where Kansas City triumphed 31-17.
The Chiefs, coming off a win against the New England Patriots the previous week, sought to regain momentum heading into the playoffs after a two-game losing streak. The Christmas Day matchup against the Raiders, however, presented unexpected challenges that tested the resilience of the reigning champions.
