Devils aim to extend Golden Knights’ losing streak in Newark

The Vegas Golden Knights will try to prevent their longest losing streak in nearly three years when they face the New Jersey Devils on Thursday in Newark, N.J.

The Golden Knights, who are second in the Pacific Division behind the Edmonton Oilers, have lost four games in a row (0-2-2) for the second time this season and have dropped 11 of their last 14 games (3-8-3). Vegas has not lost five straight games since March 8-15, 2022, which was the only season in franchise history that the Golden Knights missed the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Vegas is playing the third game of a four-game eastern road trip and comes off a 2-1 loss to the New York Islanders on Tuesday. Despite allowing only 14 shots on goal—matching the fewest in franchise history—and putting 34 shots on Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin, the Golden Knights couldn’t secure a win.

“It’s tough,” defenseman Shea Theodore said. “I thought we played good. I think giving up 14 shots, throughout the season, a lot of times you’re going to be on the better end. We just didn’t get it inside enough. We whacked away, but it’s something we have to really focus on. We have two games left before the break and we have to be better.”

Brock Nelson scored the game-winner on a deflection of an Alexander Romanov shot midway through the third period.

Vegas has lost six of its last seven road games and scored just four goals in their last three games.

“All of these games are pretty tight, just got to find ways to bury more pucks,” center Nicolas Roy said. “You’re not going to win a lot of games on the road when you score one goal. We’ve got to find a way to score more goals.”

New Jersey, third in the Metropolitan Division, has won four of its last six games and comes off a 3-2 shootout victory against Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Jack Hughes scored two goals, Timo Meier netted the winner in the seventh round of the shootout, and Nicolas Daws made 25 saves for the Devils, who are just two points behind second-place Carolina heading into Thursday’s game.

New Jersey led 2-0 midway through the second period but gave up goals to Rickard Rakell late in the second period and Kevin Hayes midway through the third, leading to the shootout.

“I liked our game and what we did to build the 2-0 lead to begin with,” Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe said. “It would have been nice to get the third one or not give up the one at the end of the second. Lots of resilience. Guys were battling, guys were tired, through overtime, through the shootout. … All in all, it’s a good two points.”

“We would have liked a different third period to secure us this win in regular time,” Meier said. “But at the end it doesn’t matter how you win. We got two points. Now we go back to New Jersey, we regroup after this game. We’ve got two more before the break, and we want to end those two games with a win.”

Sweden has picked Rickard Rakell as William Karlsson’s injury replacement for the 4 Nations, according to the team in Stockholm

Sweden has added Rickard Rakell from the Pittsburgh Penguins to its roster for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off, replacing the injured William Karlsson of the Vegas Golden Knights.

Swedish national team coach Sam Hallam confirmed the roster change on Tuesday. The team also recently brought in Philadelphia’s Samuel Ersson to take the spot of injured New Jersey goaltender Jacob Markstrom.

Rakell, 31, leads the Penguins with 23 goals and ranks second with 45 points in 53 games this season. Karlsson, who is out with a lower-body injury, is listed as week-to-week.

“‘Raks’ has just, quietly, had a really strong season,” said Penguins coach Mike Sullivan, who will also coach for the U.S. in the 4 Nations. “He’s playing the game the right way. He’s playing on both sides of the puck. He has a hardness to his game. He’s stiff on the puck.

He’s physical, he’s willing to block shots. He’s playing defense. The offensive side, everybody sees. But he’s committed to a lot of the subtleties that, on our mind, adds to winning. So, we couldn’t be happier for him. We think he’s so deserving.”

Finland, Sweden’s top international rival, made two replacements on its defense after Dallas’ Miro Heiskanen and Toronto’s Jani Hakanpää were ruled out. Heiskanen underwent knee surgery and is now considered month-to-month, according to Stars coach Peter DeBoer.

In response, Buffalo’s Henri Jokiharju and the New York Rangers’ Urho Vaakanainen were added to Finland’s roster.

The United States is also facing a few injury concerns. Vancouver’s Quinn Hughes and Columbus’ Zach Werenski are both banged up and missing game time.

“He’s not playing tonight,” said Blue Jackets coach Dean Evason about Werenski in Buffalo. “We’ll continue to evaluate same as we do with everybody that’s hurt or injured. We’ll evaluate it and move forward.”

Canucks coach Rick Tocchet confirmed that Hughes would miss Tuesday night’s game against Colorado after his team’s overtime loss on Monday.

Canada is still deciding on a replacement for Alex Pietrangelo, who withdrew from the tournament to address an injury and prepare for the rest of the season with Vegas. Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings, a two-time Cup winner and a member of Canada’s 2014 Olympic team, is one of the top candidates to replace Pietrangelo, though Doughty has only just returned to play after recovering from a broken left ankle.

Practices for the NHL-run tournament will begin on Monday, with games starting next Wednesday, Feb. 12, Thursday, Feb. 13, and Saturday, Feb. 15 in Montreal.

The round-robin play will finish in Boston, where the championship will take place. The 4 Nations is replacing the usual All-Star Weekend and is being held as a scaled-back version of the World Cup of Hockey, a year before the 2026 Milan Olympics.

Rangers come from behind to defeat Knights, Jonathan Quick earns career win No. 400 in New York

K’Andre Miller scored the go-ahead goal with 8:28 left as the New York Rangers made a rare third-period comeback to beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 on Sunday night, giving Jonathan Quick his 400th career regular-season win.

With the victory, Quick became the first American-born goalie to reach this milestone and joined Sergei Bobrovsky and Marc-Andre Fleury as the only active goalies with 400 wins. He is the 15th goalie in NHL history to achieve this feat, finishing the game with 34 saves.

The Rangers snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 8-3-3 in their last 14 games. They are now 2-20-1 this season when trailing after two periods.

Mika Zibanejad tied the game with 14:56 left, then assisted Miller’s game-winner. J.T. Miller’s shot was saved by Vegas goalie Adin Hill with 8:50 remaining, but the Rangers kept the puck in play. Zibanejad retrieved the puck behind the net and passed it to K’Andre Miller, who fired a shot past Hill’s right shoulder and under the crossbar.

Earlier in the game, Zibanejad played a key role in the Rangers’ tying goal during a power play. He prevented Jack Eichel from clearing the puck, then crashed the crease to tap in a loose puck behind Hill, making it 2-2.

Alexis Lafreniere also scored, and Artemi Panarin scored on the power play and tallied two assists. J.T. Miller added two assists in his second game since being traded from the Vancouver Canucks on Friday.

For the Golden Knights, Eichel had two goals, including one on a power play with 19 seconds left in the first period, using Tomas Hertl as a screen to beat Quick from the right circle. Hill made 24 saves in a losing effort as Vegas dropped their third straight game and fell to 3-7-3 in their last 13 outings.

Vegas took the lead again in the second period when Eichel used Vincent Trocheck as a screen and scored with a wrist shot that went through Trocheck’s legs and into the net. The Rangers evened the score 1:18 into the second period when Lafreniere scored on a wrist shot to the open side of the goal.
