Wayne Rooney has shared insights into Louis van Gaal’s unique approach during his tenure as Manchester United manager, particularly regarding mealtime regulations that raised eyebrows among the squad.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Rooney reflected on van Gaal’s distinct methods, which included strict guidelines on when players could eat, leaving some of them initially surprised.
“I thought he had a fascinating personality, and there are certain stories from his time at the club that I can’t reveal,” Rooney remarked.
“His methods off the pitch were challenging, but I enjoyed his training sessions. After training, we had to wait 90 minutes before having our meal. The players lined up table by table to get their food, with the staff table being the last. We had to wait until the manager finished his three-course meal before he would address the team.”
“He would then stand up and deliver a speech every day, followed by individual conversations with players in order of seniority,” Rooney added, illustrating the regimented routine players experienced.
Rooney also recounted a discussion with van Gaal regarding the difficulties players faced with this process and highlighted the manager’s willingness to adapt, albeit belatedly.
“In the end, Louis inquired about how he could modify his approach to regain players’ support, but it was too late,” Rooney explained.
Van Gaal’s coaching journey continued with the Netherlands national team, culminating in his departure following the 2022 World Cup. Despite stepping back from coaching roles since then, he has not formally announced his retirement from the sport.
