The Philadelphia Eagles chose Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell with the 22nd pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night.

Mitchell ran the 40-yard dash in 4.33 seconds at the combine. This marks the first time since 2002 that the Eagles have drafted a cornerback in the first round. They believe Mitchell can be a top-tier cornerback, especially alongside Darius Slay in defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s system.

“I think I’m in the right place, with the right team, the right players, and the right city,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell didn’t claim he’d start immediately, acknowledging he has experienced players ahead of him to learn from.

This pick was the Eagles’ second significant move of the night, following their extension of wide receiver A.J. Brown’s contract. The extension is reportedly worth $84 million in guaranteed money over three years, making Brown the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL.

Last season, Brown had 106 catches for 1,456 yards, following an impressive debut season with the Eagles in 2022, where he had 88 catches for 1,496 yards.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman and his scouting team have had more hits than misses in recent drafts, which contributed to the team’s Super Bowl appearance in the 2022 season and a strong 10-1 start last season.
