Wolfsburg parted ways with coach Niko Kovač on Sunday following a challenging three-month period without a win, leaving the team positioned 14th in the 18-team Bundesliga.
Kovac’s departure comes after nearly two seasons at the helm of Wolfsburg, culminating in a disappointing 3-1 defeat at home to Augsburg on Saturday. This loss marked the team’s 11th consecutive game without a victory, dating back to December.
“In our internal assessment following the defeat against Augsburg and considering the overall circumstances, we have decided to terminate our collaboration,” stated managing director Marcel Schäfer.
“While we regret this turn of events, we view it as necessary to inject new energy into the team and stabilize the situation.”
Wolfsburg has not yet announced a successor for Kovac. Their upcoming match is scheduled for March 30 against Werder Bremen.
Kovac, a former Croatia captain born in Berlin, previously achieved notable success as the coach of Eintracht Frankfurt, winning the German Cup in 2018, and clinching the league and cup double with Bayern Munich in the following year. He also led Monaco from 2020 to early 2022.
