Despite the controversial outcome, Reyes was not granted an immediate rematch with Jones and has since suffered three consecutive knockout losses.
Following his victory over Reyes, Jon Jones vacated the light heavyweight title in favor of a move to the heavyweight division. Jones made a remarkable debut in the heavyweight category, securing a submission win over Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 to claim the vacant title.
However, Jones had to withdraw from his first scheduled title defense at UFC 295 against Stipe Miocic due to a torn pectoral. Consequently, an interim heavyweight title fight between Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich was arranged, with Aspinall emerging victorious with a first-round knockout.
In a recent interview with MiddleEasy, Dominick Reyes expressed his understanding of Jon Jones’ “risk management” decision not to face Tom Aspinall.
Reyes acknowledges the potential dangers posed by Aspinall, highlighting his similar skill set to Reyes himself, but as a heavyweight. He recognizes that facing Aspinall might be deemed too risky for Jones, as the up-and-coming British fighter possesses exceptional speed, wrestling, grappling, and formidable power.
Reyes comprehends Jones’ preference for challenging someone of Stipe Miocic’s caliber, considering it a pursuit of greatness against an active heavyweight legend.
While Reyes respects Aspinall’s abilities, he aligns with Jones’ strategic decision to avoid the perceived risks associated with facing the emerging superstar.
