The Miami Heat enjoyed tremendous success in the NBA during the era of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh forming a formidable trio on their roster.
However, an intriguing possibility emerged in 2011 that could have elevated the Heat even further—a potential acquisition of Chris Paul, which nearly materialized.
Dwyane Wade, in a recent episode of The Why with Dwyane Wade on iHeart Podcasts, disclosed that the deal didn’t come to fruition primarily because Paul was reluctant to part with his No. 3 jersey, a number that was ultimately retired by the Heat in 2020.
Reflecting on the discussions, Wade recounted, “We were in talks about me joining Miami. We hashed out the logistics of ball possession and team dynamics. Then, someone raised the question of jersey numbers. It was mentioned, ‘Who’s going to wear number three?’ Silence followed, and it derailed the entire trade.”
Had Paul joined the Heat, the course of his career might have been altered, potentially leading to championship glory. Instead, he embarked on a journey with the Los Angeles Clippers and, despite his exceptional talent, remains among the elite players who have yet to secure an NBA title.
