The French Open third round produced a major shock as Novak Djokovic saw his bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title come to an abrupt end. With key rivals already gone, including Jannik Sinner and the absent Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic entered the match as one of the clear favourites.
The match began in familiar fashion, with Djokovic taking control by winning the opening two sets. However, 19-year-old João Fonseca gradually adjusted his tactics, increasing aggression from the baseline and breaking down the Serbian’s rhythm as he clawed his way back into contention.

As the contest stretched into a decisive fifth set, momentum had fully shifted. Fonseca showed remarkable composure under pressure, recovering from a 3-1 deficit to complete a 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 win after four hours and 53 minutes. It marked a rare early exit for Djokovic at Roland Garros and a historic first Grand Slam win over him by a teenager.
The result sends Fonseca into the fourth round, where he will meet either Casper Ruud or Tommy Paul. Fellow teenager Rafael Jodar also continues his strong run, reinforcing the arrival of new contenders in men’s tennis at the highest level.
