Fresh off a first-round knockout victory over Curtis Blaydes in his title defense, Aspinall had publicly called out Jon Jones, hoping to secure a matchup with the reigning champion. However, UFC President Dana White has consistently indicated a preference for Miocic as the next challenger, sidelining Aspinall’s ambitions.
Aspinall’s irritation largely stems from Miocic’s inactivity and age. The former heavyweight champion, who is now 41 years old, has not fought in over three years, with his last appearance ending in a knockout loss to Francis Ngannou. Aspinall, on the other hand, has been active and successful in his recent bouts, making him feel that he is more deserving of the opportunity to face Jones for the undisputed title.
In a recent interview with TNT Sports, Aspinall expressed his disappointment, questioning why the UFC would choose Miocic over him despite the latter’s prolonged absence from the sport.
He acknowledged Miocic’s legendary status in the UFC but argued that the former champion’s extended layoff and recent defeat should make him less suitable for such a high-stakes fight. Aspinall believes that his current form and momentum make him the rightful contender for the next title shot.
Aspinall also injected some humor into his critique, likening Miocic’s situation to that of U.S. President Joe Biden, who some believe is too old to run for re-election.
Aspinall joked that just as Biden should be replaced, so too should Miocic be pulled from the fight with Jones. Despite his respect for Miocic’s achievements, Aspinall made it clear that he feels the time has come for a younger, more active fighter like himself to take the spotlight.
