Barcelona’s manager, Xavi, has disclosed a significant sacrifice he’s made to continue leading the club for his final season in charge. Earlier this year, the Spanish tactician announced his impending departure from the managerial role at the season’s conclusion.

Taking over as Barcelona’s manager in November 2021, Xavi transitioned from a brief managerial stint in Qatar with Al-Sadd, marking the end of his illustrious playing career. His appointment followed the departure of Ronald Koeman, who was relieved of his duties amid disappointing results.

Addressing the media ahead of their La Liga clash against Celta Vigo on February 17, Xavi unveiled that he’s chosen not to receive payment for this season. This decision, he emphasized, underscores his profound love for the club and his unwavering commitment to its success.

In his own words, as reported by Barça Universal:

“I have always prioritised Barça. My last gesture was to put money out of my pocket to come and coach Barça. I want to help Barça and the last thing is that I have left to prioritise the club ahead of myself. I won’t be paid for my last year. I have made many gestures because I feel that way.”

Xavi’s inaugural full season as manager saw Barcelona clinch the league title, finishing 10 points ahead of arch-rivals Real Madrid. However, this season presents a starkly different narrative, with his team trailing Los Blancos by 10 points after 24 games in the Spanish top-flight.

In the wake of a disappointing home defeat to Villarreal, the club icon announced his decision to depart Barcelona at the end of the season. He attributed this choice to the immense external pressure he experienced, particularly from the media.
