Darwin Núñez dispelled concerns regarding the severity of his injury by showcasing his jubilant celebration during Liverpool’s triumphant moment in the 2023-24 EFL Cup final against Chelsea.
Despite missing 11 key first-team players, Liverpool clinched their 10th EFL Cup title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday (February 25). Virgil van Dijk’s decisive header from Kostas Tsimikas’ corner in the 118th minute kept their hopes of securing a quadruple alive.
In an exuberant display of support, Nunez, despite his injury, rushed onto the pitch after the final whistle.
He energetically joined his teammates and coaching staff in celebrating the monumental win, surging past Curtis Jones and leaping over a gate to partake in the jubilant scenes on the touchline.
Addressing the injured duo Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai’s animated celebrations during the post-match press conference, Reds manager Jürgen Klopp remarked, “Some weren’t allowed to come here from our squad but so many were involved in the celebrations.
Darwin and Dom are not fit at the moment and that’s why they didn’t play, but the celebration looked 100%, let me put it like this. So, we will have to talk about that with the medical department!”
Nunez, who sustained a muscle issue during a recent league victory against Brentford, has been a key contributor for Liverpool this season. With 13 goals and 11 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions, including 23 starts, the Uruguayan forward has played a significant role in the team’s success.
