The Washington Commanders made a move on Monday by signing veteran quarterback Jeff Driskel, adding more depth to their quarterback lineup. Driskel, aged 30, is familiar to the team’s new general manager Adam Peters, who was part of the San Francisco 49ers when Driskel was drafted in 2016.
While Driskel’s signing provides a backup option, the Commanders are still expected to pursue a highly-ranked rookie quarterback, possibly in the upcoming draft. Marcus Mariota, another seasoned quarterback, signed a one-year deal, offering both playing experience and mentorship.
Following the departure of Sam Howell in a trade, Driskel, Mariota, and Jake Fromm are the current quarterbacks on the roster as the team begins its offseason workouts this week.
Driskel has played for various teams in the NFL, with his most recent start coming last season with the Cleveland Browns. Despite his limited starting opportunities, he has demonstrated his skills with over 2,000 passing yards and 16 touchdowns since his league debut in 2018.
In addition to Driskel, the Commanders also signed running back Jeremy McNichols and wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus on Monday. With the upcoming draft and a new crop of rookies joining the team, the Commanders are looking to strengthen their roster further, aiming to continue their offseason roster restructuring under Peters’ leadership.
