Bobby Babich addresses the media prior to NFL

Since Bobby Babich took over as the Bills’ new defensive coordinator in February, there’s been uncertainty about his role in directing the defense, with questions about whether head coach Sean McDermott will continue calling the plays. McDermott assures that Babich will have the chance, though whether he’ll take on the role during the regular season remains uncertain.

McDermott pledges to provide Babich with opportunities, whether in practice or preseason games, to showcase his playcalling skills. McDermott, drawing from his own experience as a former play-caller, emphasizes the need to stay sharp and make quick decisions in the heat of the game.

Sean McDermott talks with reporters

Last season, McDermott handled defensive play calling after former coordinator Leslie Frazier departed without a replacement. Babich, previously the linebackers coach, earned the promotion to defensive coordinator this year.

While the defense remains McDermott’s domain, Babich’s position and potentially allowing him to call plays could enhance his prospects for future head coaching roles. This promotion in Buffalo could serve as a stepping stone for Babich’s career advancement elsewhere.
