New England Patriots playes in the training

Bailey Zappe, who started games for the Patriots over the last two seasons, is now somewhat overlooked at this year’s training camp.

He made six starts for New England in 2023 and two as a rookie in the previous year. Currently, Zappe is vying for a spot on the roster, as he trails veteran Jacoby Brissett and first-round pick Drake Maye on the depth chart.

Brissett and Maye have been sharing first-team practice reps, while Zappe is competing with rookie Joe Milton III for the No. 3 quarterback spot. Milton, a sixth-round pick, has shown flashes of the talent that made him a promising prospect from Tennessee.

For Zappe to stay with the Patriots when the season starts, he must prove he offers more value and potential than Milton. On Friday, Zappe did not take any snaps during team drills.

“That’s really up to the coaches and what they fit,” Zappe said about whether he’s had enough chances to show his worth for the job.

“Obviously, coach (Jerod) Mayo has preached quality over quantity. That’s been my whole mindset going into training camp. Whether it’s five (reps), 10 or none, I’m going to do everything I can to help the team win, whether that’s helping Jacoby or Drake out after they go through their series,” Zappe said.

Fans once chanted Zappe’s name when they were frustrated with Mac Jones, who was traded to Jacksonville this offseason.

Despite going 2-0 as a starter with a 70.7% pass completion rate as a rookie, Zappe’s performance in 2023 saw him go 2-4, with a 59.9% completion rate and more interceptions (nine) than touchdowns (six).

“I’ve been careful with the ball (in camp), not having any turnovers,” Zappe said. “I think the reps are going to come. I believe in the coaches. I believe when the opportunity presents itself, I’ll take advantage of it.”

Zappe remains hopeful about his future, having demonstrated that he can start and win games in the NFL.
