The Minnesota Vikings, who won seven games last year, made several changes this season. Despite these changes not making much of a splash beyond their own team, they were often predicted to finish last in a tough division by analysts, oddsmakers, and commentators who shape the NFL narratives.

However, the new additions have proven to be valuable assets. With their revamped defense and a rejuvenated quarterback in Sam Darnold, the Vikings remained undefeated after a notable win against the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers, finishing 23-17.

“A lot of people didn’t really have us on the list. A lot of people really didn’t put any type of emphasis on our team. We’re just going to show the world what we have in our ability,” wide receiver Justin Jefferson said. “We’re the only ones that know the type of guys that we have in this building.”

Last season, the defense struggled towards the end of the year, but this season, they have added depth, speed, and versatility. The Vikings sacked Brock Purdy six times, intercepted him once, and recovered a fumble.

Ten of the 18 players who faced San Francisco are new this year, with only one, first-round pick Dallas Turner, coming from the draft. Edge rushers Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel are playing full-time, Jihad Ward adds depth as a pass-rusher, and linebacker Blake Cashman has been impressive.

Veteran Stephon Gilmore has brought a strong presence in man-to-man coverage, and Shaquill Griffin has strengthened the cornerback position. From the start of training camp, the new group has shown creativity, energy, and chemistry.

“For some reason when they brought this group of guys in the offseason, we just jelled immediately. It’s like they knew exactly what this team is built on and they fit the exact mold,” safety Josh Metellus said. “They were our brothers instantly. The connection is ever-growing, and I’m excited to see what we can do with this.”
